I guess Boardwalk would have been a good single. Hot fun was definitely not the right one. I met Mike in 1993 in Germany, Hotel Parkschloesschen, where he was guest (for free), an ayurveda hotel that just had opened (5 stars today !). I ran the German fanclub "California Saga" then. We talked for about 2-3 hours and had lunch there, he, his wife Jackie, a friend of mine and me. He seemed to be not really satisfied with the album and the promotion in Germany was a desaster. On the same evening McCartney was live in "Wetten dass" (a very prominent TV show then), and Mike didnīt know about it at all. He should have been there as well ! Instead of that he was in a 3rd class afternoon show the next day and was only asked about the old days. He struggled to keep the CD once briefly in the camera.
I know only one person who likes the CD.

"the Beach Boys have used varispeed to make voices higher before"
Yes ! and as well to lower them, think of Wind Chimes (The wind chimes tinglin' tinglin' .....) that tape loop is used like people did years later with a sampler. Clever idea back then !

From my point of view there are only 3 reasons to use autotune, namely when the feeling of a vocal take was perfect, but the note was not in pitch exactly, to add a high voice nobody can reach (Jeff does it on the last BB album, Sweet did it always - but they slowed the tape down to sing that) or to use it as an effect (Cher in "Believe").
Oh, another reason would be to work with young children.

In my opinion the Ricky / Blondie songs are very much underrated. I like Hold on dear Brother and Leaving this town a lot, because they gave a new dimension (and soul !) to the band and the instrumental work is done very good. The chord structure of Leaving this town, especcially the bass line, is very clever. Also Here she comes has a very good groove and one of my favorite drums - the change between double time and half time and the fill inīs, I love it. Nothing against Dennis, but Ricky is by far the better drummer.

I donīt think so, - I never looked for it. It wasnīt on my mind anymore at all. Look for the CD on ebay ? Thereīs a lot of interesting stuff on it (by Alan Boyd, Darian Sahanaja, Ken Sharp, Sean Macreavy, Lee Dempsey, Nick Walusko and others).
They asked for contributions of Soulful old man sunshine and made the notes available (I guess via ESQ), 3 or 4 sent their versions in and my one made it. I had contact with Rick Henn then and he told me he liked my version very much, though the original was much more powerful, - but he couldnīt let me hear it and I had no idea about it ............... nice album anyway at all.
If you give me your email, Iīll send it as MP3.

Ever heard my version on the Japanese CD "In my room" - A Beach Boys tribute for the homeless of California from 1995 (before the original was released) ? We had just the chords and the notes of the melody.......no idea about the original arrangement. Of course I had to do it with my equipment of these days.
