What difference do you see between a Chamberlin and a Mellotron ? Iīve good a book about the Mellotron and it says they are the same, just that the Chamberlin was first and named after the inventor. The Mellotron (just a new name) had partly the same sounds and looked quite the same, just in white.
The nowadays version is digital and called "Memotron", wich has MIDI and the (original) sounds on CDs. It sounds just like the old ones (Iīve got one).

"Songs like Leaving This Town, Steamboat, and The Trader made me really sad that they didn't keep this version of the group together longer. Going from stuff like that to 15 Big Ones. Wow. "
After Carl & the passions and Holland, 15 Big ones was exactly the reason that I turned my back on the Beach Boys for several years ! I also love the Ricky and Blondie time. Ricky was / is a fantastic drummer. Yes, live it was even better.

Leaving this town has very clever piano harmonies, the bass is very Brian-like, the song structure is interesting and I love the Moog solo.
Funky Pretty is also very clever (Iīm musician myself), the ascending bass line is very fine and all the vocal-functions are really good. And again the Moog fits in perfectly. The song has - like Leaving this town (and before "Here she comes" and "Hold on dear brother") very much soul > thanks to Ricky and Blondie.

Hello Stephen and greetings from Germany ! For me it was very interesting to read about "Brianīs Mellotron". I am a huge fan of the Mellotron and still use it myself. I love it and I wondered why Brian - especcially when he owned one - used it so rarely. I guess he did it only on Country air and another tune I donīt remember. Did he demos with orchestra sounds with it ? What did he with it at all and why not more ? Around 1967 everyone who had the chance, used it. The Moody Blues, The Beatles on Strawberry fields, Magical Mystery tour and on the white album, The Stones on their satanic majesties request and so on. And who can think of these recordings without it ?? It was absolutely IN then. I guess Brian didnīt like it very much, although I have a DVD in which he praises it........
