2851  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / song on "America's Band" question on: May 27, 2007, 07:24:53 PM
In the documentary 'America's Band', there is a song they are performing in 69 or so in Europe. Carl is singing lead and I believe the it has something to do with New Orleans. Mike is playing the tamborine and dancing around in his robe. Does anybody know what this song is called? Who wrote it or was it a cover song? I like the song and the performance.

Wow. I didn't realise that Feel Flows was a live staple for several years. It just seems like any video footage I've seen of them in 74 til mid 76 they are doing oldies. I thought the set list of the 77 show seemed odd, but I guess not (other then the brand new songs from Love You).
2853  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Late 1976 and 1977 on: May 25, 2007, 04:29:26 PM
I noticed that the Beach Boys were doing a lot more proggressive material during this time. Their live shows included Feel Flows, Sail On Sailor, All This is That . Not to mention that the album they recorded (Love You) was much more creative then the '15 Big Ones' or 'MIU'.  I wonder if Brian begin to vote with Dennis and Carl at this time on decisions. From 74 til mid 76 weren't they doing pretty much all oldies? There was a concert from 1977 on youtube and it seems very tripped out. I believe it is the one where Brian has an argument with Mike before singing 'Back Home'.

I find this kind of funny. I don't know of many videos of the 3 Wilson brothers alone.

This is Dennis, Carl and Brian singing in 1976

I am sure many of you have also seen the video of Dennis singing 'You Are So Beautiful', the end of which he approaches Mike and ties a bandanna around his leg. It appears they are just having fun, but perhaps he is attempting to get on Mike's nerves.

I could search for the video, but I'm too lazy right now.
2857  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike and Dennis in 80 or 81 on: May 14, 2007, 09:02:05 AM
I have read a lot about how their relationship soured over the years. I am sure many of you have seen this video before, but it seems that Mike and Dennis are enjoying each others company at the moment.

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/M9-JoTlHn9E"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/M9-JoTlHn9E" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Does anybody know when Mike and Dennis started to dislike each other? It seems in the late 60s they were still pretty tight. But I heard that the division in the band was fairly obvious when Bruce quit in 70 or 71. Of course it may have been a gradual thing.
2858  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach boys haters, do they really? on: April 29, 2007, 07:49:16 PM
I wonder how much differance it would've made if they were called the Pendletones. Even if they still did Surfin USA, Catch a Wave, California Girls, etc.
2859  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Phil Spector trashes Brian Wilson on: April 29, 2007, 07:46:01 PM
When Brown asked Spector who his closest friends were, he presciently replied, "My attorneys."

That sounds like another person famously known as Mike Love. Of course, just to be fair, Mike never killed anyone. But I have heard somewhere that Mike has been abusive to some women. Is there any truth to that?
2860  Smiley Smile Stuff / Other Solo Albums / Re: Looking Back With Love (ML solo) on: April 27, 2007, 11:51:31 PM
I think that it is possible for Mike to make a good album. In the last 30 years:

Sumahama, Getche Back, Kokamo, Cool Head Warm Heart, umm.....Well, I came up with 4 decent songs.
2861  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: April 25, 2007, 07:28:34 AM
While I've been known to make my "should've been" albums, I disagree on that one. No Roller Skatin Child? Blasphemy! And the inclusion of Belles of Paris and Everyone's... mean you are not allowed to touch my CD player remote control. Sorry. Hands off.

If I could add one or two more songs, RSC, LIAW, Match Point, and Hey Little Tomboy would be on my list of possible add ons.
2862  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: 15 Big Ones on: April 22, 2007, 04:23:07 PM
This album is the last real group album where all five are fully intergrated. Not incliuding any Carl or Dennis songs was a big mistake, but there is a group feeling that never came back.

What about LA Light?
2863  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: April 22, 2007, 04:19:35 PM
This would've made an excellent album:

1. Let Us Go On
2. Johnny Carson
3. Solar System
4. The Night Was So Young
5. Honkin Down the Highway
6. Airplane
7. Winter Symphony
8. Belles of Paris
9. Sweet Sunday Love
10. My Diane
11. Everyone's In Love With You
12. Still I Dream of It
13. It's Over Now

Probably in a different order
2864  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: SMiLE '67 version on: April 22, 2007, 04:15:21 PM
I bet there was enough material to make a double record album. If you included Talking Horns, You're Welcome, He Gives Speaches, etc

Speaking of which, I wonder why these weren't included on BWPS.  I have always read that Youre Welcome was meant to be at the end of Smile.
2865  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach boys haters, do they really? on: April 22, 2007, 04:07:40 PM
It could be, but on my post, I meant for it to be the person that I tell I am a Beach Boy fan to. They always start singing one of the famous songs and say "they're pretty good". I just get a bit frustrated because the Beatles aren't thought of only as the guys that did Can't Buy Me Love, She Loves You, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, etc...
2866  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: the beach boys naked on: April 21, 2007, 03:12:55 PM
How about the Party album naked? It's a bit over produced anyhow.  Grin

I'll vote for him Smiley
2868  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: your fav beach boys covers/artwork on: April 20, 2007, 10:41:39 PM
My friend commented how Love You looks like a Nintedo game.

I used to think it was a quilt of some sort. But I looked closer and it is obiously animated. I don't know, there is just something about it that I like. Surf's Up is a close second with Wild Honey and Smiley Smile very close.
2869  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most overrated, most underrated SONG on: April 20, 2007, 10:36:00 PM
Overated:
1. Surfin USA -
2. Little Deuce Coupe
3. Sloop John B
4. Forever
5. Sail On Sailor

Underated:
1. Coo Coo Clock
2. Your Summer Dreams
3. Celebrate the News
4. Big Sur
5. Winter Symphony

A box set dedicated to the sessions of  Dennis' "All I Want to Do"
2871  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who is Amy? on: April 20, 2007, 10:24:44 PM
Amy was brought in for 10 miniutes? I wonder if it was the same 10 miniutes as the girl on "All I Want to Do". Smiley
2872  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most overrated, most underated on: April 20, 2007, 10:20:10 PM

Underrated:

3. Carl & The Passions-So Tough...definitely underappreciated.  This album was my first glimpse into the post-Surf's Up, pre-15 Big Ones Beach Boys, and I felt like a whole new world was opened up to me in terms of my fandom.  Every song is a keeper, and each track is like a well-kept secret, hidden from 99.9% of the world.

Overrated:

1. Holland...there are some really great songs on here, but the songs don't mesh well together.  The structure of the album seems really disjointed and awkward.  Perhaps the three-part California Saga would have been better at the end of side 2, and maybe another song could have been added to the lineup (9 is kind of a weird number).  "Funky Pretty" was much better live.

I think that the songs mesh on Holland much better then So Tough IMO
2873  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach boys haters, do they really? on: April 18, 2007, 12:23:18 PM
I suppose that I have a bit of a pet peeve. When somebody asks me who my favorite band is, I tell them the BBs, knowing what their response will be. "Oh yeah.  Old Man wish they all could be California Girls Serenade and we'll have fun, fun, fun til my daddy took the t-bird away  Banana every body's gone surfin, surfin USA."    Thud Wall :angryI always have to say, Yeah those are good songs, but that's not why I like them.

2874  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Most overrated, most underated on: April 18, 2007, 12:12:50 PM
This might anger a lot of people. But I have listened to Pet Sounds so much, that I don't really like it anymore. I still think its a great album, but I listen to other stuff now.

You can probably tell by my name that I am a huge fan of Mt Vernon and Fairway. I consider that to be a part of the Holland album in a way. Holland, I think, is one of their best albums.
2875  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Worst possible ideas for future Beach Boys releases on: April 18, 2007, 12:07:16 PM
The backing tracks to Love You would make my day! That's the main reason I like that album. Once you get passed the cheesy lyrics, and vocals that seem a bit strained at times, the backing tracks really make this thing go!
