Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Best point in time to break up-if any-to maximize the group's critical standing?

I feel like anytime after Surf's Up they could've called it quits. And I say that only from a "critical standing" standpoint. No music critic in recent years has lauded the brilliance of BB85, or even Love You to an extent. The experimental rock influence of 'All I Wanna Do' is part of the pinnacle of the post-Pet Sounds era. But they never really achieved anything like that after Surf's Up. Don't get me wrong, I think there are gems on pretty much every post-Surf's Up album (definitely not counting Summer in Paradise) but those gems aren't anything a music critic would freak out over.
However, those gems are personally some of my favorite moments in The Beach Boys career. So to us fans that live and breathe The Beach Boys, we need every minute of their amazing and fractious career, and to music critics I feel like The Beach Boys could've hung it up after Surf's Up and their standing would be the same as it is today.
Well put, Rab. We do need every bit because those moments are getting fewer and fewer with each passing year. I would add that the break up should have taken place sometime between the unfortunate passing of Dennis and Carl. That situation fueled Mike Love's mission creep to capture the group and add his awful spin and send it down the oldies road to the terrible rickety, tacky skeleton it is today.

I think these clips prove that the recent Drive In show was a fluke... Sloop/WIBN: https://youtu.be/OyVRuQQ9OxIBruce KILLS the lead. Sounds strong, considering his age. California Sun: https://youtu.be/7PqP9hUGpNkMike sounds like Mike f*ckin Love!!! Not the warbly mess from the drive in show. A little shaky? Yeah, but still sounds fabulous. Interesting, and to me very pleasing, to see Randell filling in for Scott. He’s an excellent singer, guitarist, bassist whose played with BBs, J&D, BW band, Dean/Alan/David “allstar” band— definitely earned his stripes. Of the best (non BW falsettos/BW Imitation) my list goes in order goes Al (62-early 80’s), Ike, Kirsch, Baker (on a good day), and lastly Foskett. That’s not to say I don’t love Jeff’s voice, but his mid range is where he shines in my opinion, and the falsetto could be very pitchy at times, my two cents.... a long tangent to say, that I’m happy to see Kirsch back in the picture, even if only temporary. All these sidemen are obviously so dedicated to the music, given that when they leave the BBs/Solo/J&D bands, they start/join tribute bands. Anyway, in my opinion the horrible vocals of the Drive In show were probably a combination of Mike being under the weather (G-d willing, not Covid) and shitty monitoring. And The Beach Boys, as a touring band, still seem to be a fabulous Unit. BOTH Bruce and Mike sound like they're singing from their deathbeds. They both need to retire to their rocking chairs in an assisted living facility. Mike Love could barely reach down and pick up something. Knowing that clown, he'll still try in vain to perform when he's in hospice which could be any day.

If those recent Utah shows were sold at full capacity with no gaps in seating, then that's even *crazier* than I thought.
All Mike cares about is how many tickets he sells. If he can get away with it, he will, that is his go-to mentality. Very good, CD! I see you're starting to see through this jackass.

How anyone in their right mind could be interested in this fake, watered down sham of what is called The Beach Boys is beyond any logical type of reasoning. It absolutely displays how dutifully stupid and naive the general public can be. And how dumb is it that people actually think that Mike Love is the official bearer of the group name after he has dragged the legacy through the stinking muck with the likes of Stamos and other non talents that appear on stage with this clown. It has gone far beyond removing the license from this gawd awful jackass and either retire the name or give it back to Brian who is the ONLY one to whom it should belong. It's time to put Mike Love down where he belongs and let him perform under his own Gosh Darn name and quit trying to fool those poor pathetic followers that HE is The Beach Boys.

Sweet vindication for me and OSD! Why not bitter or sour vindication ? You would enjoy being vindicated even if it means we all miss out ? I’m sure you would prefer we don’t miss out, but this attitude suggests otherwise. That's just about the most effed up response to a post that I can think of unless you're trying to out do AGD here. Of course we feel vindicated!! And even if Mike Love is not the reason for the holdup, he's rich white trash and both SB and I have been attacked without mercy for trying to make people understand that Mike Love is only out for one person and that's his own lonely ego infested grudge holding overpaid self. You owe an apology for your insidious remarks.

One quick comment: people might believe Brian really cared about the NPP songs (and other recent solo stuff) if he had continued to play them in his concerts. Instead, it comes across like "okay, I know I'm supposed to record some new music occasionally so I don't get labeled as an oldies act, so we're going to play a couple new songs....you might want to run to the restroom now cause we'll get back to playing the hits in a few minutes". (okay, i'm gonna run and duck for cover) I very much miss the inclusion of 'Sail Away' in the setlist and would love for it to be included again...that was a real gem to hear in concert. Part of me realizes that they have seats to fill and they probably know they're not going to fill them by playing Brian's solo stuff - and while I absolutely would love to hear 'Sail Away' again, my favorite part of the concert will always be the tail end 5 Beach Boys songs that rock the house. They probably know the biggest draw to seeing Brian in concert is The Beach Boys material. Given the recent Nate Ruess story, and other stories regarding the recording of NPP, I am completely convinced that Brian did care a lot about that album...regardless of them not playing any NPP songs in years. On another note, I wish that Brian and VDPs would do a small tour together. VDP's Live At The Ashgrove is one of my favorite albums - VDPs can really put on a show, and he has a charming and wonderful voice. Would love to hear them do some songs from OCA together with an orchestra, and some TLOS songs where VDPs can read the narratives he wrote, and sprinkle in some SMiLE songs, Sail on Sailor. I think Brian could include half a dozen of his solo songs in his show and not have to worry about it hurting ticket sales. Not every song in the song has to be a "get them on their feel clapping and stamping their feet" song; it's okay to have some quieter moments in a show. There was some talk back in 1995 - by Van Dyke - of doing some concerts featuring OCA material, along with some of the other songs they had collaborated on - Heroes and Villains was mentioned. That would have made for a very nice evening of music, with Van Dyke telling some of the stories behind the songs. Today, I'm not even thinking about concerts; not until this evil covid virus is dead and gone. Yeah, I see what you're saying. I wouldn't mind hearing 'Desert Drive', 'Lay Down Burden', and other solo tunes from over the years in his shows. Part of me wonders if Brian likes to think of his band as The Beach Boys...as in, if he can't currently be one of touring Beach Boys he can at least emulate them. Perhaps that would explain the BB heavy setlists over the decades of him being a solo act. Thanks for that info about VDPs...it would be nice if, after Covid goes away, VDPs would want to celebrate the OCA anniversary by doing some of those concerts, 25 years after the initial idea. Rab, if this makes any sense at all, I tend to believe that Brian and his incredible band ARE The Beach Boys far more than the Mike Love led incarnation.
