Waited a day so I could collect thoughts about this sad time for Brian. I hope he finds the strength to deal with Melinda's passing in a positive way. I'm sure Brian does have a strong network of friends who will be at his side and willing to do anything for him. He also has his fans who together can provide their support. We all need to lend ourselves and feelings for Brian. Melinda was a warm wonderful woman who I had the pleasure of meeting. She was very gracious and I walked away feeling that this was a very genuine person indeed. Try to keep your spirits as high as you can, Brian. We're all here for you! Oldsurferdude

Thanks for sharing. Loved it!
Ever after hearing Mike singing this song on the Pet Sounds Sessions I think he should've been the one to do it. Nothing against Brian but I just think Mike gives the song the needed edge.
Think what you want but the song has no need of "edge" as it's beautifully sung and totally meant for Brian. That said, I wouldn't mind a version by either Carl or Al. I've heard the Mike version and it just sounded flat with annoying bits of nasality. By the way, fantastic video!!

Atta boy, Tony! Just another nail in the sad, sad old coffin of Mike Love's, overwith years ago, copy band. It's difficult to realize that anyone in their right mind would waste their time following this ancient junket. While the music is timeless, the performers are pathetically NOT. GIVE IT UP!!!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Kokomo Spirits

Forgetting the alcohol/ Mike thing for a minute, I just googled ‘Hit Songs 1988’. As well as Kokomo, ‘Simply Irresistible’ by Robert Palmer came up. Just how successful would a aftershave or cologne be named after a 35 year old song? Every year hundreds of products are released using much more relevant artists and they still fail. The young liquor buyer will see a name that means nothing to them with a picture of some old guy who they don’t know and walk right on pass. I also don’t think October is the season for this product and I doubt it will be around next summer. Just my 2 cents.
But Kokomo is Mike's last big hit, and in his eyes, his crowning jewel. I'm sure he'll be onstage at 100 still bragging how "I wrote a #1 song WITHOUT Brian, who was busy putting out a big turkey of an album with his doctor". I would throw that back at Mike as "yes, Brian and his collaborators gave us a complete album, while you, Mike, could only cough up 1 SONG for all of 1988". Exactly. And on top of all of that is the fact that Mike Love did not write the stupid song.

The issue isn't debating whether alcohol is this or that, the issue is a guy, Mike, who has spent decades talking about how "his" band was ruined by drug and alcohol abuse, how his cousins ruined themselves through alcohol and drug abuse, and how in comparison his own study and practice of TM and meditation has kept him above all that and therefore he can live a clean and peaceful life without drugs and alcohol.
If someone preaches that way for decades, and as someone earlier suggested was so "traumatized" by what happened to his cousins via alcohol and drugs that it causes him to continuously bring it up...then sing on, perform, and endorse a song whose main theme is getting boozed up and partying with booze, that's hypocrisy, and Mike could easily have declined to participate in remaking that song with his vocals.
The message of clean living that Mike preaches, using the examples of his cousins abusing drugs and alcohol as opposed to his clean living, would ring a lot more true if Mike himself were not endorsing and singing a new song about drinking the same booze that he was so traumatized about as he watched it ruin his cousins, his family, and his band. And that's not to mention his Be True To Your Bud nonsense from the 80s when he went on a Budweiser sponsored tour and rewrote yet another Beach Boys song to promote beer and performed that crap at colleges and spring break events.
It's hypocritical.

Where’s OSD? Here I am, SB. Just reading posts on this thread and I agree with most of them but WOW, Rab really hit the nail on the head about Mike Love. Let's face it, That crumb is NOT going to change. Plenty of people used to get on my sh*t about my negative comments about that D-bag but I had this leech figured out a long, long time ago, but I'm not going to tell them "I told you so". Every instance this jackass opens his piehole, he re-seals his horrible profile. The BB's legacy will go down very well but this pathetic loser will not. Enjoy your millions Mike and even more importantly, enjoy your stinking lousy reputation.

I feel very fortunate to have met you several times. I want to thank you for being so kind. My fondest memory of you is when you and my friends piled into my car and drove you to your hotel back in '71. I can remember singing BB songs on the way!! Happy Birthday to a VERY talented man and a great person.
