John Lennon loved the song so much he said this about it when it was released: "This is the greatest! Turn it up, turn it right up. It's GOT to be a hit. It's the greatest record I've heard for weeks. It's fantastic. I hope it will be a hit. It's all Brian Wilson. He just uses the voices as instruments. He never tours or anything. He just sits at home thinking up fantastic arrangements out of his head. Doesn't even read music. You keep waiting for the fabulous breaks. Great arrangement. It goes on and on with all different things. I hope it's a hit so I can hear it all the time."

My copy of POB is autographed by Dennis. It originally belonged to a DJ named Tom Doyle. Dennis wrote on the album cover "To Tom Doyle, Get Well, Dennis Wilson 9/26/77". Next to my Beatles Butcher Cover copy of Yesterday And Today it is a most cherished piece and is displayed in a glass frame.
I love POB and all of its moodiness. From the opening piano riff representing the flow of the river to the mournful farewell which ends the LP, it's a perfect album in my opinion.

The Little Girl I Once Knew
FIVE
One of my favorite songs of all times! I don't know where to begin on this one. Well for one thing, I absolutely love the cyclical organ pattern in the song. The vocals are pure bliss and the bass vocal by Mike knocks me right out. I love the sound of the bass and the guitar in the intro. And I dig the "dead air" parts, even if deejays didn't. TLGIOK is complex and beautiful. Also it's my favorite part of Brian's Live At The Roxy cd. It's a perfect show opener.

The Party album is my least favorite 1960's era non-compilation LP by the Beach Boys. But having said that, I still enjoy it here and there, and I absolutely love the packaging of the album. Great album cover and gatefold, and very cool cut-out cards as a bonus (my copy still has the cut-out cards inside). Being a live-in-the-studio album you can feel the fun that everybody had that day. It has the genius of simplicity. However, I've always preferred hearing them doing their originals. I like the Beatles and I like 50s doo-wop, but I usually prefer the originals (and sorry to say I'm not a Dylan fan). I love to hear the Beach Boys goofing off and being silly, which is my favorite part of this LP (even more than the music on it). For me this LP is only a 3. It was a success at the time of its release being their last top 10 LP for eleven years probably because from this point on their albums appealed more to adults and not really teenagers.

Barbara Ann
THREE
My favorite version of Barbara Ann is the Live At Knebworth version. I'd give that version a 5 just because it rocks hard and it just plain out feels great. But the Party and the 45 version sounds clunky. I'm not saying it sucks, it's alright. I get bored with it sometimes. Maybe I prefer it with electric guitars and pounding drums.

Al finally gets his chance to shine on the Party album. And even though I'm a big fan of Al, I'm just not too crazy about this one. I guess I'm not into Dylan, unless if the Byrds or Hendrix are covering him. The best part of the song, for me anyway, is when Al makes his voice get raspy in parts ("....and admit that waters....", "cuz the loser now will be later win...."). But the song doesn't move me, and it's sorta weird hearing Al trying to sound like Dylan. And unfortunately all I can think of when I hear the Beach Boys doing this song is Mike Love mocking Dylan on the bizarre Endless Bummer cd I bought some years back ("...I never thought I'd get to cut a record before, but I got something to say for Al, and I also got something to say for Carl, and I got something to say for Denny, and I got something to say for Brian, and I hope it says it for the rest of the group. Why do YOU....Smell like a city ZOO....Why does your teeth look so GREEEEEEN.")

It's a very funny track, and I love hearing the band acting silly and having a good time. I can't give it more than a 3. It's never once been added to any of my BB mixes/playlists. Maybe someday I'll make a goofball BB playlist and I'll include this medley.

Love the way Mike pronounces the word "dinosaur" (dino-saw-wah). And his "whoaaa.....er, grizzly bear" always cracks me up. Great fun doo-wop stuff, very catchy. And it's always fun to hear the BBs having a good time and goofing off.

YGTHYLA

Probably the best thing on Party.
Mike, today's song is 'Devoted to You'! Oops, I listed the wrong song title. Don't know why I did that. Thanks for correcting me. I meant to type Devoted To You, not YGTHYLA. I don't where my head is today Still however....Devoted To You is probably the best part of Party, in my opinion. Four...

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Pink Floyd Appreciation Thread

I'm a Floyd fan. The Syd era is my favorite and I absolutely love what they did all throughout the 70s, especially the earlier part of that decade. Obscured By Clouds, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle are some of my favorites. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is definitely amongst my favorite albums ever. When I first got into them as a kid in the early eightues I fell into the whole The Wall thing. Watched the movie a zillion times. Eventually I burned out on The Wall and started digging deeper and eventually came across Relics in the bargain bin and finally heard what Syd sounded like. I became a Syd fan and searched everywhere for his solo albums (no amazon or ebay in 1984, and limited on the local record shops in the area I grew up in). A guy at a local flea market had Madcap Laughs for $20. Damn glad I bought it. As far as my favorite Pink Floyd songs go, Vegetable Man and Jugband Blues are probably tied at number one for me. I'm not too big on any of the member's solo stuff (except Syd of course). But I've enjoyed some of their solo material. David's stuff is particularly good.

Tell Me Why
FOUR
Same as I said about the last song. Amusing cover, not bad. It's fun. Not worthy of a 5. Nothing on Party is getting a 5 from me. It's my least favorite 60s era BBs album. I like it, just not as much as the others (from the '60s).
