As for a confirmation, yes Darian is suppose to be there... at least for the New Jersey shows.
Wait, New Jersey has been moved to Europe? Anyway, I certainly don't know all of the ins and outs. However, simply from a listener's POV, Hinsche would appear to be completely excess baggage.

Couldn't agree more. Those two performances were always some of my favorites from later years. Al did some great lead vocals live, but could never pull off WIBN like Carl. Likewise, Don't Worry Baby lost some of it's soul to me when Carl gave it away. As for other favorites, I would throw Al and Matt teaming up on "You're So Good To Me" in 96 and 97 in there as well

While '88 is clearly Brian's best solo work (save the vocals) please rememeber it was NOT Landy that got this work out of Brian. Some very talented people (Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman, Andy Paley, Seymour Stein) got this work out of Brian and almost killed Landy in the process. Gary Usher had the same experiece on the demos leading up to that album. You want to hear what Landy got out of Brian? Listen to those Sweet Insanity boots. Nothing good from '88 came from Landy's involvement. It was completely in spite of him.

Are they worth seeing? Depends. Did you see them before Carl passed on? If so, don't go. If not, go once just for the experience. They are legends. I had seen Brian a few times on his own (including with Al at UCLA), but swore I would not see the "Beach Boys" post Carl's death, Al's firing, etc. Well, I have a 9 year old daughter who is a fan and never saw them before. She saw Brian and Al, so I took her to see Mike and Bruce. The poor thing to me about Mike and Bruce is the band. I just don't need to hear John Cowsill singing Darlin' or Rhonda; don't need Chris Farmer singing Then I kissed Her...they're just not that good. I do like Christian Love, though. Kinda how I liked Matt Jardine so much more than Adrian Baker (well, that and he was 100 times better than Baker)

Correct me if I'm wrong but my memory of the Endless Summer "In My Car" clip was the cutting to interview mid song. Guess Brian must have hit goofy overdrive and it was one way to delete it.
Exactly...during which he called the song a "great piece of art..."

Well, there were figuratively a miliion such appearances by Brian in 88. The one where he performed In My Car & Love and Mercy was from the BB's variety show entitled Endless Summer, which actually aired in the summer of 1989. The infamous "campfire sessions" were from that series. All of the concert footage (including Brian's) was filmed at the Pacific Amphithaeter in Costa Mesa CA in May, 1989, the second night of the BB's/Chicago tour that year. Brian performed the two above noted songs and Country feelins. His performance for the t.v show was heavily overdubbed as his performance in concert was absolutely embarassing (I was there). The guy on the keyboard was Michael Bernard, who worked on some of Brian's early solo work.
HOWEVER, I don't think that is the t.v. performance to which you are actually referring. The one in which Brian performed Nightime with the ridiculous dance routine was on a Dick Clark variety show that ran in the U.S. in the late summer of 1988. Don't recall the actual name of the series. The performance was completely embarassing, the epitome of Brian as Landy's performing circus Bear. And, yes, he had on the leather pants.

Huh. I didn't know that.
BTW...the backing vox are one of my favorites post Holland. Fave has to be Where I Belong.
Huh? Granted, the BGV's on Where I Belong are FANTASTIC, but that was from the 1985 album...

Mike, Brian & Al have the right to use the name Beach Boys IF GRANTED A LICENSE by BRI. To date, Al had a license, it expired. Mike has the only current license, so it is exclusive. BRI (For the record, Mike, Brian, Al & Carl's estate) could vote to grant another license. To my knowledge, that has not yet happened.

Agreed, MBE. Except, I would add that in addition to being a waste of time S&S just rips my heart out because if you can get beyond the schlock, the actual BGV's of the Boys on The warmth of the Sun, Caroline, No, Don't Worry Baby show just how great they could still sound together, circa 1995. For whatvever reason, they chose not to share that with us in any meaningful way.

I think we can all sit here and give fairly good educated guesses as to why certain things did not happen, such as the '96 PS tour or the Don Was sessions. We all have a certain amount of information and knoweledge at our fingertips. HOWEVER, it is still limited. We cannot possibly fathom the what those relationships between Brian, Carl, Mike, Al were really like underneath it all. It was not as simple as someone saying, " Hey, I want to go out and do a tour full of Pet Sounds material to promote the box set, let's go", or "Although we haven't done an album together in 10 years and I just left my therapist due to your lawsuit, etc, let's make a new album produced by Don Was. " These things sound great to us in the abstract, but to those guys in those relationships with all kinds of crap behind them that we will never know, it just couldn't happen. As for Carl putting the kibosh on the PS tour, MY EDUCATED GUESS is that it was possible, although I doubt it was as simple as "Brian's voice isn't good enough anymore" (But rememeber, as we sit here today and hear Brian live, do we forget how MUCH BETTER he is now than when he started this whole venture in 2000? If Carl had thought that then, would he really have been wrong? Would we have thought the same thing then?) For instance, I rememeber hearing Al Jardine say that Carl was against the 1993 acoustic tour because he thought Al, Mike and himself weren't good enough to pull those songs off anymore. Al said that at the time he disagreed with Carl, but that when he later teamed with his kids and Carnie and Wendy, heard all of the young voices singing the songs, he realized Carl was right. (I believe this was from an ESQ interview). I am still not sure I agree with either of them, to me when Carl, Al, Brian and Mike sing together it is the sound of Heaven. But, if Carl simply did not think his group could sing well enough anymore to pull off the more challenging material, I think we have to defer to his judgment and just think about what could have been.

Well, the category is FAVORITE, not most important or valauble. So, with that in mind:
1) Carl. Best voive I have ever heard. Period. After meeting all of the guys (save Dennis) several times, Carl was consistently friendly, jovial, genuine. Pure class act.
2). Al. Great singer, underrated in the band's history. Interseting to talk to.
3). Brian. Not much more to say.
4). Mike. can't diminish his lyrical importance to Brian's compositions; undeniable presence in the band which is both vastly important and at the same time nauseating.
5) Bruce. Everything I said about Carl? Reverse it for Bruce.

sad album, but not why you think. Makes me so sad to ALMOST hear what these guys could still sound like together in the studio in 1995. The BGV's (esp Warmth of the Sun, Caroline, No & Don't Worry Baby) are unbelievable, if you can get past all of the lead vocals. Again, what could have been...

In addition, the Euro Under the Boardwalk features the Al Jardine bridge, not present on the US version. island Fever was completely remade, adding a jardine vocal to the chorus. Also, for whatever reason Carl was erased from the bgv's on the verse (replaced by Christian Love?) while rerecording a different vocal (from the original US release) for the chorus. Makes no sense.

The GOK version uploaded by Bosaroo earlier in this thread is actually from either August 3 or 4 '97 at the Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion just outside Los Angeles. I know because I was at that show, last time I saw the Boys. I recognize it only due to Carl's intro of his doctors who were there that night at the show. Carl was treating in LA at the time. I saw and spoke very briefly with Carl that night before the show and can confirm he was in very bad shape. He sat through the entire concert except for the opening Calif. Girls and God Only Knows. Thanks for the upload, it brought back memories.
