Brian’s health is certainly declining (and that’s being polite) and deserves to see out his days as he sees fit. While not agreeing with a C60 concept, if they have to do it again I say market it as a ‘Farewell Brian’ limited tour and let it rest..

He’s almost 80. He looks like he’s almost 80. Don’t get the shovel yet, Pretty Funky. We’re lucky he’s still here at all.

I personally don’t want another tour though. Let Brian rest, I agree. Just not In Peace. Not for a long time, I sincerely hope.

This guy was 100% tongue-in-cheek. Source: Am that guy.

Can’t always tell on the interwebs. I therefore take back what I (wildsmiley) said in response to your comment. Nothing mean, I just pointed out all the official Beach Boys members (somehow neglecting David because I was typing so fast, in a hurry).

I’ve been reading Brian’s book, for the first time. I was a bit trepidatious before about reading it, I’m not sure why now, exactly. It’s a damn fine book. I love that parts of it are like the day in the life of Brian, a la Busy Doin’ Nothin’. I’ll probably post a review of it once I’m done.

You know, I can tolerate Stamos in almost any other setting. I  actually really liked him on the vastly underrated Scream Queens.  But as soon as I see him in a BB context I just want to punch him in the face.  He just looks like he thinks he’s the bomb and it drives me absolutely crazy.  It’s like, you are NOT a beach boy and you’re actually associated with the very crappiest parts of BB-dom.

I can’t entirely fault anyone who is a Beach Boys fan but my biggest problem with Stamos is that he started to think of himself as a Beach Boy and as a spiritual replacement for Dennis, with his looks and playing the drums. But of course Dennis is irreplaceable. His indomitable Beach Boy spirit and his soulful, beautiful songs belong to only one man really: himself.
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike home listed for sale- where is he moving? on: April 23, 2020, 05:43:36 PM
Ah. So I do always find a way to criticize Mike. Well, not always. Like, not when I’m listening to Meant For You, All I Wanna Do, Big Sur and many other tunes, and whenever he’s in the vocal blend, or especially his great bridge vocal in my all-time favorite song, Wouldn’t It Be Nice. Not then.

ANYway....
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rank BBs album closing tracks on: April 23, 2020, 05:38:39 PM
I really love My. Vernon & Fairway, and always play it when I listen to Holland, but I think of it as separate from the album, its own thing. Therefore, Funky Pretty is the final track on the album, just as it was when the record was released in ‘73.
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike home listed for sale- where is he moving? on: April 23, 2020, 08:00:16 AM
Is it just me or is it a bad time to move in the middle of this pandemic? Or do I always find a way to criticize Mike?
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Don't know if this has been discussed on: April 23, 2020, 07:56:32 AM
Denny won the interview with this line: "Hey man, a piece of wheat growing in the field has just as much right to be alive as a rabbit."

Gotta be a Manson saying, right? This is from around that time. It reeks of that kind of hippie jingoism.
59  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Custom Beach Boys shirt designs on: April 21, 2020, 05:00:57 PM
Two more for now. I keep thinking up decent ideas that never work out on paper, err, shirt. More to come though. Eventually.

The Beach Boys Love You - front

Keep Calm and Listen to Friends - front

Keepin’ The Summer Alive isn’t too shabby, but I’ve always been one of the very few that dislikes Getcha Back. It’s soulless, much like a great deal of that album, so I guess it’s pretty representative of it.
I’d have preferred it if BB85 had started with It’s Gettin’ Late, which is a really damn great song.
61  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: April 20, 2020, 02:40:22 PM
Elton met Brian in 1970, I believe. There’s a rather famous story about it.

Elton confirms first meeting him in 1970.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postrock/2007/12/when_elton_met_brian.html

Thanks for that link, I had no idea that Elton had a hand in ensuring that Brian would be honored at the Kennedy Center Honors like he was. I’ve watched a number of clips of other entertainers I like getting the Kennedy Center award, such as Bruce Springsteen, Robert DeNiro, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Carol King and Sean Connery. But only one of them moved me emotionally, to tears actually, and that was when Brian Wilson was honored. Thanks, Elton.
62  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: April 20, 2020, 07:43:31 AM
Derp, I forgot about that ‘72 ‘Help Me Rhonda’ appearance. My brain is stuffed with so much Beach Boys-related factoids that the little guys in their cubicles up their sometimes misplace things. It’s a mess up there.
63  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: April 20, 2020, 05:00:00 AM
In the ‘70s, Elton would’ve at least have met Carl since he did the background vocals on ‘Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me’. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elton had met a few others then. Probably not Brian though.
64  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rank BBs album closing tracks on: April 18, 2020, 02:19:45 PM
Well, at least there are a fair amount of Beach Boys albums that open with a killer track: Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, Fun, Fun, Fun (single version is better though), I Get Around, Do You Wanna Dance, Wouldn’t It Be Nice (the very best one, and my favorite song ever), Heroes and Villains, Wild Honey, Meant For You, Do It Again, Slip On Through, You Need a Mess of Help, Sail On Sailor, Let Us Go On This Way, Good Timin’, That’s Why God Made The Radio.
Not bad at all.
65  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The return of the "What are you listening to now?" thread on: April 18, 2020, 09:54:39 AM
I’m currently listening to a ‘60s Sunshine Pop playlist I put together last night on my phone. Featured on the playlist: The Association, The Mamas & The Papas, The Turtles, The Left Banke, The Happenings, The Free Design, Sagittarius, The Yellow Balloon, The Monkees and more. Lotsa fun. Knowing me, I’ll design an album cover for this when I’m able to.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rank BBs album closing tracks on: April 17, 2020, 10:19:15 PM
Oh boy, this will be exhausting. Um..

28. Forever by Stamos (sickening)
27. Bull Session With Big Daddy (you have no idea how much I wish In The Back of My Mind was the closer, it’s only my third favorite Beach Boys song ever, but welp...)*
26. Denny’s Drums (I cannot really abide the clumsy filler tracks of the early days)
25. The Shift (not the worst on Surfin’ Safari, but pretty damn lame all the same)
24. Winds of Change (NyQuil in musical form. One dose will knock you out cold)
23. Make It Big (I count this as a closer because the older tunes were obviously not made for Still Cruisin’. Make it Big is pretty lame)
22. Boogie Woodie (drags the Surfer Girl album down, which is unforgivable)
21. Auld Lang Syne (like the vocals and Denny’s message but it’s something I virtually never listen to)
20. Finders Keepers (I vaguely like it)
19. Endless Harmony (half good)
18. Just Once In My Life (ehhhh)
17. Custom Machine (all right)
16. Transcendental Meditation (decent)
15. Love Is A Woman (pretty dang good)
14. Barbara Ann (good)
13. Whistle In (always have a soft spot for Brian’s musical fragments)
12. Mama Says (ditto. “Poof!”)
11. Shortenin’ Bread (more than a guilty pleasure)
10. It’s Just A Matter of Time (one of only five songs I dig on BB85, very endearing)
9. Don’t Back Down (bitchin’)
8. And Your Dream Comes True (damn fine)
7. Funky Pretty (great)
6. Cuddle Up (beautiful)
5. Summer’s Gone (so very lovely)
4. Cabinessence (unique and brilliant)
3. Cool, Cool Water (delightful)
2. Caroline, No (absolutely outstanding, the gorgeous, unforgettable closer to my all-time favorite album)
1. Surf’s Up (a stunning work of unparalleled genius)

*Edit: if I counted In The Back of My Mind as the closer of Today, I’d rank it at #1. But the OP asked me to rank the album closing TRACKS not songs, therefore....  Undecided
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite, least favourite, overrated, and underrated Beach Boys album on: April 17, 2020, 06:03:47 PM
@All Summer Long if you have a smart phone and have either Google Play, Apple Music or Spotify (I haven’t used Spotify in a few years but I’d be surprised if the album isn’t on their anymore), you can listen to Friends or the whole album on YouTube. Friends is one of the true great Beach Boys albums, warm, sweet, laid back and harmonically gorgeous.
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite, least favourite, overrated, and underrated Beach Boys album on: April 17, 2020, 08:14:59 AM
Figured somebody would’ve. It’s very divisive and I totally understand those who have difficulty with Love You. It’s not as grand as Sunflower, it’s not in the same ballpark, no scratch that, it’s not in the same hemisphere as Pet Sounds. It’s not that kind of brilliant. Nothing is as brilliant as Brian’s untouchable masterpiece. I wouldn’t call Love You a masterpiece at all actually. It’s just a peculiar, memorable, endearing, enduring, sweeter than candy peek into Brian Wilson’s heart and soul. That’s what makes Love You it’s own kind of brilliant in a delightful, offbeat way. Your mileage may vary.
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Worst BBs-related pairings for A side and B side vinyl? on: April 16, 2020, 04:52:44 PM
‘Hey Little Tomboy’ b/w ‘Everybody’s In Love With You’

Ughlrr gonna VOM...
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite, least favourite, overrated, and underrated Beach Boys album on: April 16, 2020, 02:44:06 PM
I put Love You in the same category as Smiley Smile, Wild Honey and Friends because they’re strong examples of where The Beach Boys, especially Brian, were musically generally out of step with everyone else in pop music and were uniquely brilliant. One could argue that Love You is an even better example of this because it’s the biggest, most different oddball out of all.
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's your favorite lead vocal from each Beach Boy? on: April 16, 2020, 11:30:32 AM
This is a bit of an old thread but I don’t care, I’m replying. I was away at the time.

Brian: Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder), Wouldn’t It Be Nice, The Warmth of the Sun
Carl: It’s Gettin’ Late, Where I Belong, God Only Knows
Dennis: (Wouldn’t It Be Nice To) Live Again, Slip On Through, Forever
Mike: Big Sur, Meant For You, All I Wanna Do
Al: Lady Lynda, Cotton Fields (single version), Help Me, Rhonda
Bruce: Deirdre, Disney Girls, Tears In The Morning

Special mention for Blondie and his amazing lead vocal on Sail On Sailor. Carl was the best singer in the group by far, but not even him could match up to what Blondie brought here. Nobody could.

Edit: post number 666 for me! Mwahahahaa Rock!
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The *official* Brian/BB picture thread on: April 16, 2020, 08:45:23 AM

Brian: Hey Carl?
Carl: Yes, Brian?
Brian: Who's this bald guy here and where's Mike?
Carl: *sigh* that IS Mike, Bri. Hush now, they're taking our picture.
Brian: That ain't Mike though! I mean Mike has hair, this guy is a few strands away from full cueball status.
Carl: No, that's definitely Mike, he's been balding since we knew him. You know that.
Brian: Naw he has hair. It's hat-shaped.
Carl: Wait what? What are you even saying right now?
Dennis: *snicker*
Mike: You're a dead man, Wilson.
Al: (looks up at his own receding hairline) Actually,
does anybody got a hat?
73  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If 15 Big Ones was a completely originals album on: April 16, 2020, 05:50:15 AM
Had we had an album like this, we wouldn't have gotten Love You.

+1! If 15 Big Ones had to be its lame-ass, stanky self to pave the way for Love You, then it was meant to be.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Favourite, least favourite, overrated, and underrated Beach Boys album on: April 15, 2020, 06:04:15 PM
His words absolutely nail the deeper appeal of The Beach Boys. What listening to albums such as Smiley Smile, Wild Honey, Friends and Love You is like. This is not normal music by not normal people (as if there’s such thing as normal). These albums are unique and outsider and I thank the stars above for that. This band is like no other and Bangs nailed just why. Thanks Lester.
75  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When did Mike realize \ on: April 15, 2020, 02:54:49 PM
@Pretty Funky, that’s definitely understandable. I suppose that’s part of the reason why I don’t want to meet Mike or Bruce. It’s already too much to deal with their quirks from afar, seeing their attitudes close up is another thing altogether. Whereas with Brian, it’s hard to find a quirkier individual than him. Plus I love the guy and to be able to nervously attempt to ever put into words just how much his music means to me directly to him is the main reason why I’d love to meet him. There’s always the danger of your idols letting you down when you meet them, which is why people often say you shouldn’t idolize someone too much or have too high expectations but I can’t help it, it’s Brian Wilson. But I think I’d be more accepting of having a bumpier encounter with him because of all he’s been through, the fact that we’re lucky he’s here at all and that he’s happy.
