1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 27, 2021, 02:07:44 PM
Of course I want to say a big thank you to all those involved in making this happen - especially Mark, Alan and Howie and of course Mr. Desper and the Beach Boys themselves!
This album was really the first Beach Boys album I can remember listening to and is a large reason I got hooked as a fan. This set - especially in these days of lockdown - is such a blessing! I have both the larger CD and LP boxes coming but I also bought the hi-res download too and even though I've only listened through once so far it is absolutely worth every cent and more cause I know this is one box I will enjoy for many years to come!

A few quick questions as it has been a while since I've heard some of these rarer tracks but are there group vocals missing on the choruses of Seasons in the Sun and also Sweet and Bitter? I was just expecting to hear a fuller group effort in those parts. As I say, maybe it's just me not remembering correctly. I feel like there might be subtle little things missing on other tracks too as well as many little additions that weren't present before. I just wonder (if I am correct in remembering) if we might see alternate mixes of some of these tracks in a digital only release?

Also interesting to hear the alternate vocal take of Forever including the slight lyric change. I actually got a bit emotional when I got to the Forever track and backing vocals. This music just means so much to me as it does to most of us!
So, again, a heartfelt thank you to those getting this beautiful music to us fans and I look forward to what else we have in store in the coming months and years!

Okay, so what is this supposed to be?

Looks like nothing

Well, I don't know about nothing. I'm sure it's not an official release if that's what you mean but it still seems interesting enough to me. You can play 30 second previews of the tracks and some of it I have never heard before.
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / Other Solo Albums / Re: Between Us (Blondie Chaplin) on: October 11, 2020, 05:33:50 PM
Does anyone know where I can listen to this album? I'd love to buy a copy but can't find it anywhere other than for stupid prices. Not available on streaming services eit Cry
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 1965 Copyright (Today!/Summer Days) on: May 11, 2019, 07:26:22 AM
This has probably been covered at some point but does anyone know why there was never sessions and outtakes released for the 1965 copyright extension from both Today! and Summer Days? Or was there and I somehow missed it?

Would have been great to have things like the alternate lyrics version of Please Let Me Wonder with Mike on lead plus backing tracks like “In the Back of My Mind”.

- Anyone ever noticed the similarities in the ascending, creepy violin part in this version of TTGA 2:16 to 2:18 when compared to the ascending, creepy violin part in at 0:29 in Be With Me? I could be mistaken, but there might be yet another track from this era that also has a similar-sounding part too.

Bluebirds Over the Mountain?

Very interesting. I couldn't hear any theremin, but I haven't listened to it intently with headphones yet; where in the track is theremin heard?

It starts at around 1:46

Does anyone else think it strange that on the record label website on the page for Unleash the Love it has the following quote:

Quote
"Trio unveil "organic and perfect and fantastic" rendition of 1968 Beach Boys single" - Rolling Stone

And yet when you go to the original source the "organic and perfect and fantastic" quote is from Mike himself...

Sorry to bump this thread but I was just listening to "Christmas Eve" (which I love) and I swear I can hear vocals around 2:24 - am I just hearing things?

9  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Request for Photos (Sydney 2008) on: May 15, 2017, 03:34:25 AM
I posted this over on the Brian Wilson community forum but I thought I would try my luck here as well (I wasn't sure where to put this so mods please feel free to move this if you wish)

I'm not sure how much luck I'll have with this but I was just wondering if the gentleman who took the photos at the fan event (which Brian made an appearance at) at the Orient Hotel in Sydney back in January 2008 would still happen to have those photos? I am interested in purchasing a copy of one or two photos.

That’s still up in the air right now.  Any thoughts about whether there’s a preference for CD or vinyl for a release like this? EP or full album?  I would appreciate any comments that might help weigh a decision one way or another.  This was originally recorded with the intention of being used for European promotional purposes.  But, it did come out better than we hoped (Thank you, Adam!) so if the demand is there, we might pursue releasing it.

A full album would be best as I'm always in favour of releasing as much stuff as possible and personally I prefer CDs because I have no way of playing vinyl. Is there any chance there will ever be another release on CD of Something Funny Goin' On and I Think About You Often?

oh man. lol sorry. No offence to Mr. Desper. I honestly thought it sounded like some kind of licensed production music, you know.  Embarrassed

No need to apologise. It's actually a really good version - in some ways I prefer it to the original.

luv the elevator music that plays at the end of the clip.

If you're referring to the post directly above yours then that is the Beach Boys - it's the alternate mix of 'Til I Die done by Steve Desper.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Unpopular Beach Boys opinions on: March 24, 2015, 10:24:39 PM
I'm gonna frequent this topic.

Almost every cover is better than authentic material

- "The Letter" (not even close)
- "Cindy Oh Cindy" (they did it punchier)
- "Sloop John B"
- "Seasons in the Sun"
- "Let's Go Trippin'" live (and someone questions Carl cannot rock? What with silly debates "No, Carl was a mere teenager, it can't be him on "What'd I Say"" blah blah blah Roll Eyes)
- "Hot Fun in the Summertime"

etc. etc.

One original that blows the Beach Boys one away is "Talk to Me" - Little Willie John's version is MILES better.

Re: "The Letter" - Joe Cocker does a much better version than both the Beach Boys and the original. Check it out if you haven't already.
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys/Byrds Connection[s] There are quite a few. on: February 12, 2015, 09:28:50 PM
Melcher ripped off Don't Worry Baby's rhythm track arrangement for Mr Tambourine Man.
Of course! Hal Blaine was just ripping off his own drumming on Don't Worry Baby. Historical fact.

Wasn't it confirmed that it was in fact Dennis drumming on "Don't Worry, Baby"?

Not available in the Australian iTunes store

Yet -hang in there. In took several weeks for the Big Beat to appear last year.

I only just realised the Big Beat was in the iTunes store so I just went and bought it (on Google Play) then Smiley

I really hope we don't have to wait a few weeks for this release to appear though because this looks a lot tastier than the Big Beat so I'm really desperate to hear it!
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: THE BEACH BOYS 1964 KEEP AN EYE ON SUMMER (follow up to The Big Beat 1963) on: December 03, 2014, 12:06:33 AM
Does anyone know if this will be released through avenues other than itunes? Like Amazonmp3? I'm excited about this compilation, but have never been a fan of itunes. If this is that only release, I will buy it, but if it will roll out on Amazon eventually, I'd much rather wait.

Hi Eric,

I know the Big Beat 1963 was released on Amazon and other sites (eg: Google Play - https://play.google.com/store/music/album?id=Ba2wvotzfd5hthw2klhwjqqa23i) so I assume it will be released at a later date just like I assume it will be on the Australian iTunes/Google Play stores eventually because that's what happened with the Big Beat 1963.

Not available in the Australian iTunes store Sad I really wish they released these on CD.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson albums query on: October 12, 2014, 04:27:26 PM
Hi Tony,

There is also Orange Crate Art which is written (mostly) by Van Dyke Parks but sung by Brian, and That Lucky Old Sun which many people, including myself, seem to enjoy. There is also the odd track on his other albums which is 'new material'. So on What I Really Want for Christmas you have the title track and "Christmasey" and on Reimagines Gershwin you have two 'new' tracks (ie: Brian completing unfinished Gershwin tunes) in "The Like in I Love You" and "Nothing But Love". There is also two pretty nice tunes - "The First Time" and "This Isn't Love" - from Live at the Roxy Theatre which have never been given proper studio releases.

If it was me I would start with Brian Wilson, That Lucky Old Sun, Imagination and then follow that with Smile, Reimagines Gershwin and Orange Crate Art and then the rest. Anyway, that's just my opinion but perhaps you may want to listen to a few tracks on Spotify / iTunes / YouTube or whatever before making your decision.

Hope that helps.

How can one save YouTube material and burn it onto CDR?

Try http://keepvid.com/ - you should see a few "audio only" options.
