Pretentious academic drivel...
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Mike and TM on: July 25, 2016, 08:21:02 AM
I am wondering if Mike, and Al, too, for that matter, are still active practitioners of TM. Or if that was a passing fad in their lives. I'm also curious if anyone knows if they got into yoga, which is closely related to TM.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Stack O Tracks on: September 01, 2015, 08:08:09 AM
We all know the original vinyl issue of Stack O Tracks came with a booklet with sheet music and guitar chords to the songs on the album. Anyone on this board who was of age back in that day recall having Beach Boy jam sessions playing along with the songs using the provided sheet music?
5  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Differences to live song versions compared to studio versions - who wrote what? on: July 31, 2015, 07:22:35 AM
I like the live version of Let The Wind Blow from "in Concert" much better than the "Wild Honey" version. I like the slower, more moody pace and the instrumental solo (not sure if that is a guitar or a synthesizer of some sort)
6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Priore's Claim that The Beatles heard Smile tapes in early 1967 on: July 13, 2015, 07:36:49 AM
This was investigated shortly after the book was published (can't recall if it was here or another forum - someone will recall) and it swiftly emerged that, unless The Beatles, individually or collectively, entered the US illegally, no-one was in the right place at the right time. As I recall, the source was VDP and when later pressed he merely noted that both albums used sound effects. Except that Smile didn't, unless you count "Fire".

Plus the animal sound effects on Barnyard.
7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: June 27, 2015, 12:39:22 PM
That's a gigantic bummer that you had to miss the back 1/3 of the film.  My sympathies.  Hopefully your family emergency worked out too.

The emergency turned out to be nothing significant. Thank you for the concern.

Finally saw L&M. Had to drive 160 miles to see it!, then had to leave the theater about 2/3 way through the movie because of a family situation. The last thing I saw was Brian/Dano solo performance of Surf's Up at the piano. Exquisite! As far as I could tell, Dano did an incredible job mimicking Brian's body movements and facial expressions while playing SU for the solo, compared to the actual footage of the real Brian playing it.. I was just awestruck by  the attention to detail when it came to clothes people were wearing in known photos, furnishings of the studio and control room, etc. I really enjoyed as much of the movie as I was able to see and hope to catch it again in a theater before it comes out on DVD. The scene that got me most choked up was the one where Brian and Melinda were sitting at the piano and he started playing that riff (sounded like Love and Mercy to me!) and then told her that he made it up on the spot for her, and that it was now gone. Wow. I don't know if the real Landy was as rotten as that portrayed by Giamatti, but Paul did a great job making me hate him.
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB members singing live leads on songs originally sung by other members on: March 22, 2015, 03:46:28 PM
When I saw the BB live back in 1985, after the release of that self-titled album, Bruce said the whole song "She believes in Love Again", inlcluding Carl's part from the recording.
10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Misprint on Smile back cover on: March 01, 2015, 06:09:27 AM
I just noticed, after owning it for 3 years, my copy of the Smile Sessions has a typo on the back cover of the sleeve with the black and white photo, and zodiac signs. Villains is spelled "Villians" on Heroes & Villains. Are they all this way? Were the original printings for the vinyl jacket back in '67 this way? Do I own a unique anomaly that is worth millions?  Wink
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Recorded SMiLE songs performed live (besides BWPS Tour onward)? on: February 28, 2015, 07:44:28 AM
The Flame song is actually called "Don't Worry, Bill". Wonderbill was Mike's idea of a corny joke.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Wilson family history on: January 22, 2015, 11:11:06 AM
Besides this discussion forum, I am also interested in family histories. FindAGrave.com is one of my favorite websites for searching for cemetery information on famous people as well as not-so-famous people. I don't know how many of you have checked out that website, or if Brian is interested in his family history, but on that website one can track backwards from Dennis and Carl 7 generations of Wilsons back to Elias Wilson. Not a lot of information is posted on some of the individuals but most have photos of their tombstones and cemetery information. Their are also links to follow siblings, spouses, and other children of the individuals. I find this stuff fascinating and I like to explore cemeteries, although for no ghoulish purposes other than curiosity!
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Credits on Only With You on: December 05, 2014, 02:49:44 PM
I didn't realize Pacific Ocean Blue was written with Mike. I thought Dennis wrote that with Gregg Jakobson. Also, I can just about imagine the flow of women in and out of Dennis and Mike's apartment!!!!
14  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Credits on Only With You on: December 04, 2014, 10:15:48 AM
It has seemed to me that over the years Dennis and Mike's relationship went back and forth from tolerance at best, to acrimony at worst. It amazes me that they actually wrote a song together, especially one as beautiful as Only With You, considering that Mike always seemed to resent Dennis' material. Anyone know what the extent was of Mike's involvement in this song, or if there are any other gems out there the two of them wrote together?
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: TV Movies on: November 05, 2014, 07:26:28 AM
The fake "Planet of the Apes" beards in Summer Dreams were enough right there to call this a "pile", not to mention the acting, screenplay, etc...
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Stand-in for Mike on: October 28, 2014, 02:46:18 PM
I'm curious about the Beach Boys/Maharishi tour in 1968. I'd like to hear from someone who witnessed it firsthand. What was the format? Did the BB play a set and then the Maharishi gave a lecture to the audience? Or how that work exactly?

I heard "Melt Away" playing in a Denny's restraurant the other day.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Stand-in for Mike on: October 27, 2014, 10:36:22 AM
I seem to recall reading somewhere once that Dean Torrence stood in for Mike during a tour in the 70's when Mike was off somewhere learning to levitate (!!??). Anyone know anything about this?
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Kid on congas on: October 22, 2014, 09:19:37 PM
During the Good Vibrations tour of 1976/Anaheim show, there's a young blond kid playing congas in the background. Is that one of Al Jardine's sons?

Actually, I'm far from being a "treehugger", but I seldom discuss politics or religion. I do have opinions in these matters, just don't like to share them on anonymous discussion forums. I don't want to ruin anyone's "fun, fun, fun"!
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Re: New member on: October 07, 2014, 12:22:00 PM
I have thick skin when my taste is called in question! "Tree" was not included in my revamped Surf's Up lineup because Reilly and Parks' vocals just don't do it for me. If Brian had sung it I might have a different view of it. I welcome the different points of view and personal tastes because "that which unites us(love of the BB) is greater than that which divides us"
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Just joined on: October 07, 2014, 10:07:47 AM
Just joined after lurking on the board for years. Been a BB fan since 8th grade (1972) when I first heard "I Get Around" on the radio and was hooked. Bought my first album, Best of the Beach Boys Vol.2 get that song. I used to think I was the only "geek" who liked to tinker with album lineups, but now see that there are others like me. My most recent concoction is a new track lineup for Surf's Up:

Don't Go Near the Water
Long Promised Road
Lady
Disney Girls
Student Demonstration Time ( I know, most folks here hate it, but I like it and thinks its a good rocker, despite ackward lyrics)
All I Wanna Do
Cuddle Up
Big Sur (Landlocked version)
Feel Flows
Lookin' At Tomorrow
Wouldn't it be Nice to Live Again
Till I Die
Surf's Up (Smile sessions version)

I also recently put together a compilation of songs the BB have covered. I call it "The Beach Boys-Under the Covers!)
I am looking forward to continued discussions with my fellow BB fans!

Just joined after lurking on the forum for a long time. Been a Beach Boys fan since 8th grade, 1972. First album bought was Best of the Beach Boys Vol.2 which was the first album I could find that contained "I get Around", a song I fell in love with after hearing it on the radio. I thought I was the only "geek" who tinkered with album lineups until I read some of the postings here. Glad to see I'm not alone!  My latest concoction is a revamped "Surf's Up". My lineup goes: Don't Go Near the Water; Long Promised Road; Lady; Disney Girls; Student Demonstration Time; All I Wanna Do; Cuddle Up; Big Sur (Landlocked version); Feel Flows; Lookin' At Tomorrow; Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again; Till I Die; Surf's Up(Smile Sessions Version). I think it makes a much better flowing album. I know a lot of folks here hate SDT, but I like it and think it a pretty good rocker. The lyrics do get a little ackward at times. I'm looking forward to continued discussions with fellow Beach Boys fans!
