101  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The twofers on pc on: February 03, 2006, 11:33:55 PM
Doesn't anybody else have that problem?
102  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The twofers on pc on: February 03, 2006, 12:41:40 AM
I can not play any of the twofers on my pc. I've tried the trick with keeping the Ctrl-button down while loading, but it doesn't help.
Why is that? Are they copy prtected or something.

It's very anoying because I can play cd's at work and would love to hear some BB music there too.

When it originally was released I picked this title up for one reason only: Almost
all the tracks are WINGS tracks! They play behind her on all the 70's material that's
on the disc.

That's why I bought it too. I heard some tracks on the radio and they sounded like Wings outtakes - which, of course, they are. If you like Wings, give it a try.

Does any of you have that album he made with Isabelle Adjani, Pull Marine? I would love to hear that.

The film he scored with Anna Karina, Anna, is amazing too.

'Sous le soleil exactement' as sung by Anna Karina is my favorite Gainsbourg track.

He wrote a late-sixties' hit for France Gall (sp? Zelil?) called "Sucette" (lollipop) which is, perhaps unsurprisingly, all about giving blowjobs - fairly explicitly. The great joke was that Ms. Gall, a particularly dim example of manufactured French popstarlet, wasn't in on the joke when she recorded it (nor, apparently, for some time after). So there was this innocent blonde la-la-la-ing a nagging piece of pop fluff all about oral sex on the TV ...

(Waits for corrections from Zelil ...)

She wouldn't talk to him for years after he told the thruth on a TV show.  I think she even stopped her career for a while.

Some three or four years later he wrote another song for her: 'Les ballons' (The balloons). She recorded it and it was relased as a single.
Then he revealed that the original title was 'Les tettons' (The tits)!

A cursory listen reveals that it's a lot of fragments and live performances. Some unreleased songs. Interesting stuff.

Could you post a tracklist for this one, please. I am interested.

If you like Gainsbourg I think you should Jacques Brel give a try. I rate him even higher then Gainsbarre!

Anyway, here's some info in English about our Serge:http://www.francevision.com/nsltr/vf14/gains.htm

109  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Big Star- How the heck did I miss out on them? on: January 05, 2006, 11:32:09 PM
I actually had the solo albums I am the Cosmos and Like Flies on Sherbert first. I learned about them through a Dutch music magazine OOR, way back in the late Seventies/early Nineties. I was especially interested because I read about all those Beatles influences. And I am a big Beatles nut.

Couldn't find any Big Star albums then. I lked what I heard.
Finally I found the two-fer. Was somehow disappointed. Perhaps I expeted the 15th Beatlesalbum? I don't know. It's too long ago.

Then, a year or two ago, I came across that Third album, and I really, really, love that one.

But it's true: not that many people know Big Star, especially here in Europe. A friend of mine has thousands cd's and vinyl albums. But when I showed him my Big Star cd's he had never heard of them.

So, it's good to see them discussed: spread the news.

I've had the two-fer for years and didn't see what the fuss was about. Then I finally bought Third/Sisters lovers and suddenly it clicked.
Now I love them all.

I saw them live on their tour with the expanded band. One of the best shows I've ever seen! That big suit, Tina's bass, the running around on stage...
And all those people coming on stage one by one. All first rate musicians...

They even played 'Wordy Rappinghood'!

They like their Velvet Underground a lot, don't they?

I agree on 'Into Dust' tough! A beautiful piece of music.

Miles From The Lightning - Jeffrey Foucault
March 16-20, 1992 - Uncle Tupelo
Separate Ways - Teddy Thompson
Martha Wainwright - Marta Wainwright
Innocence - Luka Bloom
Vultures Await - Will Johnson
On And On - Jack Johnson
The Evening Of My Best Day - Rickie Lee Jones

Not bad, he!
What do you think?

Child Is the Father Of The Man.

Now, how I long to hear the complete, original version of that song. I know it's not finished, but a person can keep on dreaming, can't he?
115  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Best live act you've ever seen in person. on: December 28, 2005, 12:12:37 PM
Best concerts?

Talking Heads, with their expanded band was great. 1980-1981? The big suit, the running around on stage, the Tom-tom Club interlude, the BIG base sound.

The Kinks, a few years before that. A live album was released of that tour. It was a outdoor concert. It started raining just before they were due on stage. But Ray remained in front, in the rain, for the entire show. He really was one withe the public that night. Man, what a concert!

But, the best concert ever - the only one  I wept - was Brian Wilson on his SMiLE tour last year. It was in Antwerp, in a beautiful old concerthall. 2 000 seats and it wasn't even sold out.
