Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Ricky Fataar

Hello. I know Ricky was credited with playing rhythm guitar as well as steel guitar in concert in 1973-74. Are there any concert photos out there that show Ricky playing those songs? I am referring any photos other than this one: Thanks.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Meeting Brian & Al vs Mike & Bruce

I haven't met Brian or Al. I did contact Al was and asked if he would sign an item for me if I sent it to him. He was very nice during my brief interaction with him and he did sign my item.
I met Mike and Bruce two years ago. The venue was right across from the local mall. I saw their tour bus when I came out of the mall (I was waiting around for the concert). I decided to walk over just to see if I could meet anyone. This was several hours before the concert. Jeff came over and talked with me for a bit and took a picture. He was really cool. Bruce came out of the venue and was walking over to the mall. He stopped and talked with me for several minutes and took a pic as well. When he came back, he stopped and talked some more. Mike didn't get off the bus until right before the show started. By that point, I was joined by several other fans. Mike promised that he would come out after the show and meet with all of us. He kept that promise. He spent a considerable amount of time signing autographs, taking pictures, and talking with fans. He was very nice. I talked with Scott as well, who was also pretty cool.
No one has really mentioned Blondie in this thread. I'd love to meet him. He seems like a really cool guy.

Here is something that I found interesting. I know Ricky sang a few lead lines on the studio version of Funky Pretty. While reading The Beach Boys FAQ book and the section regarding who sang lead on what, there is a list of leads for the "In Concert" LP. It lists Ricky as singing lead on that version of Funky Pretty. We know he played drums on the live version, but I'm pretty certain that it sounds like Blondie singing the lines Ricky sang on the LP version. Can anyone verify that?
I didn't know Ricky sang any lines on the LP version - I always thought it was just Carl, Al, Blondie, and Mike rotating the lead on that one, on record and in concert. Ricky sang the following lines on the Holland version of "Funky Pretty": "Glow glow glow come on glow" and "Why she's a princess imparted to me"

This is great news! Just downloaded it. I really enjoy Blondie and Ricky's contributions to the band. They shouldn't be downplayed. Now I would love to see good quality versions of "It's A New Day", "Hard Times", and "Carry Me Home" released. I'd also love to get good quality live versions of "Here She Comes" and "River Song" with Blondie on lead.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Good Vibrations with original lyrics
|

I used to have a version of "Good Vibrations" that started off with Carl singing the opening of the final version of the song. Then it went into Brian singing the song's original lyrics. Was this a fan mix or something that was actually released. I know there was an "early take" officially on the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey two-fer, but it didn't include the opening line from Carl. I cannot find this version anywhere. Anyone know anything about it? If I had to guess, it was probably some sort of fan mix, but I'd like to find it again.

Does anyone know when Blondie's first appearance onstage with the band was? In the "Beach Boys In Concert" book, it states that Ricky started performing with them in September 1971. Did Blondie play any shows before becoming an official members in early '72?

According to Jon Stebbins, the song was intended to be used as a shampoo or hair gel commercial or something, and when Dennis tried to pitch it to said company, he was threatened with defenestration.
Wow, that's interesting. Thanks!

Can anyone give me some info on this song? I know it was a Dennis composition and Blondie sang. Someone had posted it on YouTube and said it was recorded around the time Surf's Up was recorded? Is there any truth to that? If that was the case, then Blondie sang lead on the song before he was an official member of the group. Any facts about the song would be appreciated! Thanks!

Not to get it toooooo far off track, and I don't play drums, but maybe back then a lot of that was going around, for instance it's common knowledge that Buddy Holly played drums on stage for Ritchie that fateful night at the Surf Ballroom.
Actually, one of the Belmonts (Carlo Mastrangelo) played drums for Ritchie that night. Buddy played drums for the Belmonts. I've seen all 7 photos taken that night. Carlo also played drums for the opening act, Frankie Sardo. There are no photos of the Big Bopper performing that night, but I'm going to assume that Carlo played drums behind him as well since he played drums for the other acts with the exception of the Belmonts, of course. Ritchie had played drums the previous night at the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay.

I've read several places that Bruce played in Ritchie Valens' backing band in 1958. I remember reading somewhere that Bruce played drums. In an interview with Bruce, he stated that he played keyboards. That's neither here nor there, but my question is...Are there any photos of Bruce playing with Ritchie?

It was hard to pick just one song from most of these albums. Then, there's "Summer In Paradise". I didn't even bother. I guess if I HAD to pick one, it would be "Forever", just because I love the original. Not really saying these are the best, but they're my favorites.
Absolutely. By and large these songs are ALL great...and sometimes it was really hard to pick one over another. But personal preferences are certainly NOT the wrong answer. I picked Add Some Music To Your Day. Forever and This Whole World are FAN-friggin'-tastic. I really like Slip On Through too. The whole lp is terrific. And that was only choice 1 of 28 lps I considered. Many of the albums had 4 or 5 or MORE 'right answers'.

Yep, I noticed that too. It is now playing in a town (Springfield, Ohio) about 1 hour from where I live (Columbus, Ohio). The film is finally done running in Columbus it would appear, as of yesterday. This could portend that some "smaller" markets will get the film now as Roadside Attractions tries to finish the run in out of the way (non-metropolitan) areas. From what I've read on some movie sites, that's pretty common these days. Moral of the story, keep an eye out! I drove the 3 hours to Columbus the day it opened to see it. Glad it is finally playing in my area. Will probably see it multiple times this coming week.

Here's something I don't think anybody has thought of...
ever thought that Brian could be comparing the *current* configuration of his solo band in comparison to the previous incarnations? If so, I would definitely agree, as having Matt on falsetto and having Al and Blondie definitely has made this solo tour sound better than any other solo tour he's ever done.
This is how I took it.
