1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: All studio versions + studio evolutions of Surf's Up on: August 04, 2015, 09:37:23 PM
I dislike Carl's overdubs in the 1971 version. Particularly the organ.

Of the officially released versions, Surf's Up from TSS is my favorite.

However my all time favorite version is the bruiteaur mix of the 1966 recording with the 2004 BWPS version.

That is beautiful. The two lost bits of Smile I regret not hearing most are the original lead vocals for Worms, and the strings for Surf's Up. This is great.

Thanks, Wirestone!

Please don't yell at me if this has been asked elsewhere (I'm looking at you, AGD), but what about us iTunes buyers? No booklet available? Are the credits online anywhere? Hm.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Wow. Great Brian Interview in Billboard. on: April 05, 2015, 12:57:11 PM
I haven't heard Brian sound this articulate and wise in an interview since the 60s:

The lyric video for "Right Time," with Brian looking engaged, peaceful, and in his element on a really nice song.

There's not a full demo here, but Brian plays a bit of "I Know There's An Answer" on piano while going over vocal parts in this video.

7  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Have Any Pet Sounds Piano Demos Surfaced... on: January 18, 2015, 06:23:04 PM
...other than "Don't Talk?"
I was listening to "IJWMFTT" today, and wondering what the basic demo of that could've been like. I have no clue.
Anything on youtube?

Sheesh.  I'm happy that some folks' lives are so awesome that the title of this thread is worth such outrage. I was just genuinely excited. Not trying to trick anyone.
Will the film be 100% flawless and free of annoying inaccuracies? Nah. But it's been gestating for yearsandyears, and I was just, and still am, excited to be able to FINALLY (ahem) see it.
So so-reeee.

No, unfortunately. I was on the air when they passed by the broadcast booth. A couple of minutes later, I was handed the acetate. Carl look a lot more imposing up close than I expected.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: General public reception to Surf's Up on: December 31, 2014, 10:04:32 PM
I worked at my college radio station at the time Surf's Up came out. Our music director had scrawled on the back of Sunflower, "Side 2 is bearable," or maybe it was Side 1. Such was the BB's status at the time. When they played at our school, though, Carl and Al came wandering through our station and I was handed an acetate of "Long Promised Road" I understood to just have been delivered to them. I *may* have been the first DJ anywhere to play it on the air. Dunno for sure.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Johnny Carson isn't really a strange song for that time period.. on: September 12, 2014, 06:56:19 PM
Hey, young 'uns. I was there, and "Johnny Carson" sounded absolutely idiotic.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wow...Extreme denial regarding Wrecking Crew replacing Beach Boys on: September 06, 2014, 05:19:23 PM
Hey, since we're partially on the subject of weird PS percussion, I've wondered for decades what the metallic "chik" sound is on the front of and throughout "Caroline No." The one that alternates with the Sparkletts bottle. It kinda sounds like two halves of the top of a metal music stand being clacked together. It's certainly not a tambourine because there are no jingles in the sound.
I will now perform the relevant intro :-)
chik-chik-chik, bubbabubbabubba, chik-chik-chik, bubbabubbabubba, chik-"Where did your long hair go..."
Don't forget to tip your waitress.
Anyone?

lol, Ron.
If I didn't trust my ears, I wouldn't have been making music no one wants to hear since 1970. Hey, wait a minute... :-)
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Once and For All on: June 09, 2014, 06:51:23 AM
This has been an interesting thread to me. I never thought about who was singing the middle of GOK. What's been revealed here makes good sense to my ears.
I do think, though, that sweeping generalizations like "man overdubbing himself can never sound as good as a group take" are silly examples of anti-technology prejudice. I also still think the a cappella breakdown in Salt Lake City is all Brian in spite of what I've been told here by people who are undeniably expert, and that sounds awesome. (Don't even get me started on The Beatles "Nowwhere Man" or "Because," which sound like all-John to me, again in spite of what I've read from authoritative sources.)

Of course, for the ultimate BW take on "Twinkle Twinkle," there's "And Your Dream Comes True."

19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who's that little guy with the teeth? on: January 05, 2014, 10:02:27 AM
I had it backwards at the time. I'd, er, borrowed, my older sister's Live In Concert and All Summer Long as my first BB albums. When I started filling in their older records, I wondered who David Marks was and what happened to him.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Gold Star Studios Echo Chamber convolution reverb sample on: December 14, 2013, 02:26:09 PM
Thanks for posting this. I made a "Be My Baby" beat in Logic Pro X, imported the sample as an impulse response in Space Designeróboomóthere it was. That sound.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's decline coinciding with Phil Spector's decline on: November 14, 2013, 06:31:40 PM
Y'know, I wonder if we're all over-thinking the reasons for Brian's decline/withdrawal. Here's what I mean.
I was profoundly, viscerally, and so sadly struck by that recently posted interview where Brian said his internal voices started when he was around 25. I don't know why in all the decades I've been a fan I've never really considered how non-stop, every-day, every-minute awful that must be. I'm embarrassed at this lack of simple empathy on my part. Imagine having negative voices shouting at you every dark accusation and warning your subconscious can muster, all the time. I'm amazed he functioned at all. He's been suffering with this for decades. Omigod. I feel so bad for him. It no doubt happened all day today, even.

AGD, yep, that's it. Thanks. It did work.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys - How did they miss the Good ship Quadraphonic? on: October 07, 2013, 12:26:28 PM
Hm, I've listened to the Surf's Up album in Surround, or at least a makeshift variant of it that was around when the album was released. I don't remember the details, but it had something to do with mucking with phasing to generate a rear channel. It did get the sirens in "Student Demonstration Time" to spin around the room. I listened to the album that way after reading that it was mixed with the system in mind.
Anyone remember any details of this kind of Surround, or "Quad" as it was called?
Did I hallucinate all this?
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: its a beautiful day 2012 mix on: August 31, 2013, 11:19:03 AM
I'm with the kill my soul crew on this one. Ew. This should be the single from "Worst of the Beach Boys."
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Don't Know - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? on: February 14, 2013, 06:19:03 PM
"And Your Dream Comes True" is also essentially "Twinkle, Twinkle," though it took me decades to realize it. (Brian's part, specifically.)
