Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Whennn was the last time Mike got to write with Brian alone in a room?

I hope this is a suitable place to bring this up. In perusing YouTubeI came across a Chuck Negron interview https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m8gEzfQ2c-sAt 32:05 the interview gets really like interesting. I don't know if it was ever in the cards , but Negron talks about a reunited TDN opening for the Beach Boys during the C50.. He then describes why it did not come about from the TDN perspective. According to Negron it was not going to happen because "Danny Hutton is not going to take the chance to be the third wheel again because he is running the show". Substitute Mike Love for Danny Hutton and " second wheel" for "third wheel" (although for my money I would rather see Al than Mike) and you get an idea of how C50 broke down.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Carl lose some of his motivation after 1973?
|

My theory is that there were a number of things going on but the main thing is that Carl grew up (in 1973 he was only 24 or 25 years old):
* In 1977 and 1978 he had his own demons to overcome which he did in a remarkable way.
* He might have been ambivalent about nostalgia stuff. While the more progressive music would be more satisfying artistically, playing what the people want sets your kids (and grand kids) up for life. When he took his sojourn from the band his main complaint was about the quality of the presentation, not the material itself.
* From what I have read, Carl was a father figure not only to his own kid's but also to those of his brothers.
* Somewhat related, but it seems that Carl was the patriarch of the Wilson clan. In this role I can imagine that the issues with Brian & Dennis took a huge toll on him.
In short, I think that as he got older, there were things in Carl's life that took precedence over producing the next "Holland". If my theory is true maybe the music did suffer, however, it makes Carl a more admirable man and the Wilson family more fortunate for having him.

Every time I listen to "Silk Degrees" I think that Carl would have sounded great singing songs like that (Blue Eyed Soul).
Listening to things like "Baby Blue", " Love Surrounds Me", "Rainbows", and " Angel Come Home" make me think that Carl & Dennis had the synergy to be a successful duo.

There is something to be said for releasing the best song on an album regardless of how commercial it might seem.
Sunflower - This Whole World - All I Wanna Do
Surf's Up: - Surf's Up - Til I Die
CATP: - All This Is That - You Need a Mess
Holland: They got it right
In Concert: - Marcella (10 x better than the studio version) - SUSA (exception to my rule but it is a fresh take on an oldie)
15 Big Ones: - It's OK (should have the first single - another "what were they thinking" moment) - Just Once In My Life - Had to Phone Ya
Love You - Honkin - Johnny Carson (why not?)
MIU - Peggy Sue was the right call - My Diane
LA - Angel Come Home - Love Surrounds Me
KTSA - I like a lot of the songs on the album but it just was not a good record for the time. Maybe "Some of Your Love" with different lyriss.
BB85 - Where I Belong - It's Getting Late

Next experiment. We know that "Isn't It Time" was a last-minute addition to the album, recorded with all the guys together. Now, listen to that. Notice how the harmonies are ragged. Notice how you can hear several different voices throughout, and on the harmony parts. That strikes me as being a genuine group recording. And it sounds radically different from anything else on the record.
Ragged as the harmonies might have been (I don't hear it so much) "Isn't It Time" was the best thing about the TWGMTR album for me and Mike's doo-wops really made that a GREAT song. I wished they'd done a whole album with that style. That song is the classic BB's vocal sound! Yeah, Isn't It Time is a BB classic, just as much as the "life-suite" is. It should've been the lead single, as much as I love the title track, it's pretty dull and non-commercial. I thought the original (album) version of the song was fantastic. I wouldn't have wanted a whole album like that and was glad for some of the other material as well, but it was really, really strong. (Single version didn't suit my taste as much. I thought it almost ruined it, to be honest.) I think the single should have been FTTBA/PCH. Maybe not an obvious choice but these (and SG) are so superior to the rest of the album and its hits you on such an emotional level that it could have been a hit.

Say what you will about Al but if I had to choose one living Beach Boy to see it would be Al (preferably backed up by Brian's band).
Another thought: There is talk in the Foskett interview thread about whether Jeff's move is motivated to give an fu to Brian's organization. Couldn't the set up of the Mike/Bruce show be seen as an even bigger fu to Al since the sole purpose of the structure appears to be to keep him out?

I always tend to go for the simplest explanation:
Last year Jeff was burned out so he withdrew. Being in a band and being a caregiver would more than a handful for a period months, let alone, more than a decade.
This year a spot opened up in Mike's band.
For Jeff this is attractive because it is regular and an easier gig than his prior one.
For Mike it is attractive because Jeff is a known quantity and adds a little authenticity to the act.
When Jeff joined Mike he was a free agent so the impact of an FU would be quite limited.
Or maybe Jeff doesn't like Al or maybe he does not wish to be part of upcoming "Love You at 38" tour.
