1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian on Facebook live next Tuesday 11/24/20 on: November 26, 2020, 08:40:56 AM
Managed to trawl through the FB thread, typically 'concise' answers from Brian as expected.  Someone asked what he remembered about recording Surfin' at the Morgan's house, Brian answered "I remember it was 1961"  Cheesy

Shame, my bank balance won't allow it.
However, in the unlikely event that someone who possesses a copy and decides they've read it more than enough - bear me in mind!  Most kind  Grin

10  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2017 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds - The Final Performances) on: August 07, 2017, 02:40:54 AM
I was at the Glastonbury Abbey show on Saturday (Festival set with Pet Sounds in the middle, the only 'deep cut' was Wild Honey).  I hadn't seen Brian live since the 2012 reunion and although I know Brian's advancing in years and he's never been the most animated of live performers; I was shocked at how detached and frail he appeared, as has been documented on this board Brian seems to be wilfully ...'sabotaging' is too strong a word ...'reinterpreting' his vocals on the Pet Sounds tracks; it is noticeably these songs only, I Get Around, Fun Fun Fun etc. are delivered as they always have been.
The band however were amazing as per usual, Al was on fine form, Matt was amazing and Blondie owned the stage for WH and SOS.  But as for the man who's name was on the poster; there was a hell of a lot of love in the room (er...field) for him but I honestly can't see him doing this for much longer.

Finally built up the courage to listen to Mike's track ...sweet Jesus... as a Brit I don't really know who Stamos and McGrath are but I guess the nearest Brit equivalent would be if Mick Jagger was to release a single with Dean Gaffney and Joey Essex.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Carl Wilson's son gets his butt kicked on: October 15, 2016, 02:45:23 PM
From Brix Smith Start of The Fall's autobiography, when describing her childhood karate class in California:

"I was the only girl in my class and was expected to spar with boys and men.  I soon worked my way up to yellow belt and then to orange.  One of the boys in my class was the chubby, shy son of Carl Wilson, the lead guitarist in the Beach Boys.  Of course, growing up in Southern California meant the Beach Boys were akin to God.  Everyone got excited when Carl came to watch the sparring.  Every time I had to spar this boy, I'd kick the bejesus out of him to the tune of Good Vibrations running through my head."

If you can get Channel Four's '4 on Demand' service, I urge you to download last week's '8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown' and watch Adam Buxton's 'autotuned' clip of The Beach Boys (just before the last ad break).  I struggled to breathe for about ten minutes afterwards, it is very funny.  It seems that someone attempted to upload it to Youtube but it's now been taken down.  If you can get hold of it, it's well worth watching.

I used the 'animal noises' part of Swedish Frog in my version of I'm In Great Shape and the 'orgasmic'(?!) part in my The Elements.

Hello, I'm a very occasional poster and daily lurker (good name for a newspaper that) - I posted my mix of Smile at the end of last year to general indifference, which may well have been because its crap!  Anyhow, I'm gonna post it again like it or not!   Here's my original post:

My attempt at Smile ...well I say mine; if someone else has already made a track sound as good as I believe it possibly can, there's no reason for me to tinker with it.   So the album includes huge chunks of the fine work of soniclovenoize and a touch of shangaijoeBB.
My own efforts owe a lot to the Share A Smile compilation from way back as this was the first Smile fan mix I owned and a lot of it has stuck with me, they're made up from segments from The Smile Sessions and soniclovenoise's mixes - most of my edits and mixes appear on side 2.
I'm definitely of the school of thought that Smile should be 12 (well 13 with Our Prayer) tracks rather than suites and I've also uploaded it as two separate sides because that's how an album should be godammit!  Anyway, here goes:

SIDE 1
1. Our Prayer (TSS version)
2. Heroes & Villains (shangaijoeBB)
3. The Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine (TSS)
4. Do You Like Worms? (soniclovenoize)
5. Wonderful (TSS)
6. Child Is Father of the Man (TSS - with a small edit by me)
7. Cabin Essence (TSS with addition by me at the end)

http://www107.zippyshare.com/v/DgsWTIUs/file.html

SIDE 2
1. Good Vibrations (TSS version with edit by me)
2. Wind Chimes (soniclovenoize)
3. Vega-Tables (my mix inc a bit from Share A Smile)
4. The Elements (my mix)
5. I'm In Great Shape (my mix)
6. Surf's Up (TSS version with small edit by me)

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy and would welcome your comments.

Cheers, Matt
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / The Best of Brian Wilson - Solo Artist on: April 24, 2015, 05:01:49 AM
I've knocked up a Best of Brian Wilson collection for my own listening pleasure.  So not to get too bogged down, I stuck to the following criteria:
Tracks from the solo album era, so no tracks pre-88.
BW original(ish) tracks only, no Beach Boys re-visits; so nothing from Brian's Pet Sounds and SMiLE albums and nothing from the Disney or Gershwin albums.
Collection to display BW lead vocals; so no leads from Al, Zooey, Nate, CW or Elton!
This is what I came up with:

1.  This Beautiful Day
2.  Love and Mercy (NPP bonus version)
3.  Your Imagination
4.  Live Let Live / That Lucky Old Sun (reprise)
5.  Gettin in Over My Head
6.  Don't Worry
7.  Melt Away (IJWMFTT version)
8.  She Says That She Needs Me
9.  Orange Crate Art
10. Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight
11. Midnight’s Another Day
12. One Kind of Love
13. Lay Down Burden
14. Southern California
15. What I Really Want for Christmas
16. The First Time (live)
17. This Isn't Love (live)
18. The Last Song

Thanks!  My idea was to make I'm In Great Shape more of a cohesive song rather than a collection of unrelated segments just stuck together (albeit with Workshop tagged onto the end) - You may think I have failed in my attempt!

No comments?  Not even abuse?  Oh well, fair enough.

The Radio Times have created a new project where you can see what was on BBC TV and radio each day from 1923 onwards, you can also search for appearances by an individual or groups.  I did a search for The Beach Boys and here are the results (they aren't chronological  though and some of the programmes don't appear to be relevent in the slightest):

I do enjoy Al interviews; with Mike and Brian you know in advance what you're going to get (Kokomo/George Harrison/writing with Cousin Brian/drugs are bad - Mike.  Rock n Roll album/God Only Knows is Macca's favourite song/one word answers - Brian) but Al will talk ...and talk.
