This is another great Beach Boys "what ifs." With Rieley getting the Boys back into the spotlight and with Surf's Up the song creating interest, this got up to No. 29. It it had been a truly great album, it could have given them a really big comeback with progressive songs instead of the coneback with oldies that would come with Endless Summer.

They needed a great album, and didn't quite get there. If Smiley Smile was "a bunt instead of a grand slam," then Surf's Up was a double, with the runners being left and second and third. Adding 4th of July and WIBNTLA would have given them the great album.

It's really sad when you think of how Dennis and Carl tried to fight the oldies trend in the mid-late 70s that it was a disagreement between Dennis and Carl that might have cost them their best chance to reestablish themselves as a viable, progressive group.
402  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: History of Mike's reputation on: January 10, 2010, 08:23:14 AM
I think Mike can be an a-hole a lot of the time, but I have to side more with him on the songwriting issue. If I were Mike, the thing that would really bother me was that whenever anyone else wrote with Brian (Usher, Christian, Asher, Parks), they got credited, but Mike didn't. And if he did write lyrics to Dance, Dance, Dance, it had to be particularly hard to see Carl get credit for the guitar riff but Mike not get credit for the lyrics.

I also think (maybe I'm underestimating Mike's greed) that if he had gotten the credit he deserved on a lot of the songs, he wouldn't have pushed for it for his five words on WIBN. There should be been a system, where some songs, like California Girls, would be "Music by Brian Wllson, lyrics by Mike Love"  and a 50-50 split. A lot of the songs in dispute should have been "Music by Brian Wllson, lyrics by Brian Wilson and Mike Love" for a 75-25 split.

Brian was the one who first admitted to an audience in 1986 that Brian wrote the lyrics to California Girls. Yet in the seven years until Mike got him into the courtroom, he never gave him credit/money.

I'd say that Barbara Ann has been played the most, followed by Sloop John B. Rock and Roll Music and I Can Hear Music might be the next two. Mike and Bruce have made Do You Wanna Dance a staple in recent years.
405  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BB Fantasy League (What If?) on: November 23, 2009, 02:22:21 PM
How about this one: In late 66/early 67, Brother Records was going to be signing new artists with various Beach Boys having an active role in their output. How about, as the first Brother Records artist, Mike Love? Brian could have told Mike: "The Beach Boys are going to make Smile my way. If you don't like it, you can leave and you'll be a solo artist with a nice deal from Brother. I will write music for you, you can do the lyrics, and Terry Melcher can produce. You'll sell a lot of records, and so will we." I think that could have been the best for all concerned.

Other what-ifs:

What is Sunflower had been the huge hit it should have been, restoring the BBs to prominence and earning Dennis recognition as a great songwriter (and pretty darned good singer)?

A 1973 conversation from Audree to Brian and Dennis: I know you have a lot of reasons to resent your father, but you disappointed me by not going to the funeral. You both should see psychiatrists now, so that these unresolved feeling don't rule your life and jeopardize your marriages to Marylin and Barbara?

And maybe the most painful one to ponder: What is Dennis hadn't drowned when he did, and lived for the planned Jan. 1984 intervention led by Carl and Guercio. Maybe Landy wouldn't have been able to save Dennis, but maybe Landy sobers up Dennis, but Dennis sees Landy's bullshit and helps Brian see what Landy is truly all about and gets him away to someone else who can keep them both clean.

When I first head the "Denny fell asleep in the his camper" story, when the original two-fers came out, one thing came into my mind that I've never hear answered: Why didn't anybody try to wake him?

In 1965 it would be an actual case of "taking a nap" rather than "passing out," right? Why didn't someone go to the parking lot and say, "Wake up, Denny, we need you in the studio"?

When he hurt his hand, didn't Dennis say something like "The last song I'll ever drum on is 'Riot'" which of course lyrically morphed into became "Student Demonstration Time."

I don't know where but she sends me there.

I'm glad I went, now I that much more sure that we're ready.

Then I wondered as it got light
Were you still awake like me?

Lots of people with no place to go
I know a place where you can go
410  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who let Bruce write songs for the album? on: September 28, 2009, 09:44:05 AM
I thinke Deirdre is fine. Tears and At My Window are the two from Sunflower that don't do it for me. If we're rewriting history, I have a true fantasy scenario:

The Beach Boys meet Rieley earlier, say just after 20/20 came out. He starts their makeover - stage clothes, longer sets, connecting with the "hip" crowd earlier - and tells them not to waste prime material for the final single they owe Capitol, to save it for the future deal he will negotiate with them.

So after releasing their final, unsuccessful Capitol single, Games Two Can Play/We're Together Again, and generating some buzz with their improved live act, the Boys release their first Warners album, Breakaway:

Side 1:

Breakaway
Celebrate the News
This Whole World
Add Some Music
Deirdre
It's About Time

Side B

Slip on Through
San Miguel
All I Wanna Do
Our Sweet Love
Forever
Cool, Cool Water

This would be a million-and-two seller.
411  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Relationship between Brian and Carl on: September 10, 2009, 02:40:00 PM
Even Melinda has said Brian felt Audree favored Carl, so it's obviously something Brian truly never got over. I'm sure Audree loved all her sons to death, but when she needed someone she could count on, it's only natural she would turn to Carl. Brian and Dennis being no-shows at Murry's funeral might have been intended as a slight on Murry, but I'm sure Audree was the one who felt let down.

But even with that trouble and the 1978 "turn off Brian's mic" incident, they seemed to be getting along well by 1980. In that interview from the KTSA promo film, Carl is smiling, sitting along Brian saying. "God you're so great," then bursts out laughing when Brian says "I like food." And Carl seems sincere at Knebworth in praising "our beloved Brian."

I think the real rift came from Landy in the 80s. Landy knew to truly get control over Brian he needed to drive a wedge between the brothers, and he succeeded.

I like "Sam niguel" but it wouldn't have fit on KTSA. It sounds just too different to the rest of the songs.
It DOES sound different, but that wouldn't b unusual for the Boys. Their previous album included a beautiful, haunting ballad in Baby Blue, a rock version of a traditional children's song in Shortenin' Bread and a never-ending disco song, Here Comes the Night. Talk about songs that don't fit together.

It's not just on LA either. Take a Load off Your Feet hardly fits on the same album with Surf's Up, Feel Flows and Til I Die.

KTSA needed any good songs it could get, so I think San Miguel would have helped.
413  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The KTSA album on: September 02, 2009, 09:55:24 AM
With all the talk about the lack of Dennis' participation or songs, wasn't "San Miguel" in the running for KTSA at one point? Since Dennis most likely needed money, it seems like he would have been glad to have the song on the album.

I think San Miguel is a terrific sound that would have helped KTSA a lot and would have gotten more notice there than it did on 10 Years of Harmony.

What could be removed from KTSA to make room? A lot.

1. I'm So Young
2. I Can Hear Music
3. Do You Wanna Dance?
415  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Official \ on: August 05, 2009, 07:11:25 PM
Our Sweet Love is a terrific song, but when the box set came out in 1993, I was surprised to see that as thew fourth cut from Sunflower. I figured This Whole World, Add Some Music and Forever would be on there, but I was surprised OSL made the cut over Slip on Through. Not only do I think Slip on Through is a better song on its own merits, but it's an uptempo (or at least midtempo) Dennis song with one of Denny's best vocals. Our Sweet Love is a  great Brian melody with a fabulous Carl vocal, but those are much more plentiful.

It's just another case of Dennis being slighted.

Our Sweet Love is still a great song, though. The only ones from Sunflower that don't work for me are Tears in the Morning and At My Window.
416  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How on: July 20, 2009, 06:14:15 PM
"Cuddle Up"  was definitely one I was thinking of. It also would have been great to hear  "I've Got a Friend." Even if they weren't in the regular setlist at the time, I would have figured someone would have thought, "Hey, we're  recording a live album, let's get a song or at least a lead vocal from Dennis."
417  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: How on: July 19, 2009, 03:50:23 PM
I'm sure this must have been discussed before, but why was Dennis snubbed on "In Concert," except for the cover photo?
418  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis: Post Bambu-----1979-1983 on: June 23, 2009, 03:56:32 PM
Since there were several songs on Youngblood that Carl had no hand in writing, it's too bad he didn't choose to do a Dennis tune. Even though Dennis was pretty far gone then, you wonder if Carl could have said he wanted to do, say, Love Remember Me, and ask Dennis to work on it with him. It might have been a nice lift for Dennis.
419  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In regards to the Dennis and Mike relationship on: June 22, 2009, 06:34:49 PM
Denni,

I had never heard that Dennis had sex with Brian's wife. It might have happened; other people on the board know more than I do.

But Brian did have sex with his own wife's sister.
420  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: on: June 10, 2009, 07:25:15 PM
I'd like also to thank Ed for his comments and participation in this board . . . you are still writing a book I hope.

I have a question for Ed related to what seemed like Dennis' ascendency to front man of the group in 69-70 . . . and why it didn't happen.  the group's popularity in the US was at a nadir at this time . . . no hits of any kind.   They had turned to outside producers (Murray, Rick Henn, Terry Jacks) without success.  Dennis was writing and producing and was the only member of the band with any "hip" cachet.  Slip on Through opened Sunflower and Forever was the best song on the album (IMO, certainly one of the stand out tracks).

Why didn't Dennis become the leader of the group?

I think it's simple: Despite their quality, both Slip On Through and the Dennis-heavy album tanked on the charts. I said before if Slip on Through had been the hit it should have been, it would have been followed by another Dennis-written single (either It's About Time or Forever) and the album could have been the smash it should have been.

If that had happened, I don't care how jealous it would have made anyone, Warners would have demanded Dennis hada big role on the next LP.

I want to know what happened to this guy:

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair
I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air

That verse is one of the best lyrics in the entire Beach Boys catalog by anyone, Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks included.  It's beautifully written and creates an indelible, slightly abstract image in the mind that complements Brian's music perfectly while remaining in that boy/girl genre.  Now it's become almost a contest to see how many times Mike can rhyme romance, glance, and chance.

How about "I don't know where but she sends me there."

That might be THE best lyric in a BB song. It's a great job by Mike of marrying his "boy/girl" senisibilities with Brian's "psychedelicate" music.
422  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: June 05, 2009, 08:19:48 PM
Of the two I would pick Sound of Free. Big surprise there, right.  LOL

I like Lady a lot and like most of Dennis' ballads (and LOVE some of them), but I really wish he had done more uptempo songs like Slip on Through, San Miguel, It's a New Day, I'm Going Your Way (California Slide), It's About Time, etc.

These pictures were all new to me. Thanks for posting ! Do we know from which occasion they are? Dennis and Mike at a press conference... When and where? Dennis looks like bounded for death, which unfortunately happened
I think it was probably a press conference after James Watt banned them from the White House because they supposedly attracted an undesirable element.
424  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The *official* Brian/BB picture thread on: March 02, 2009, 08:22:55 PM
I think there's some good, post-77 Dennis moments. for all that went on in Australia, he certainly SEEMS pretty together in the footage on YouTube. I think he's very good during Carl's slurring musings before Surfer Girl ("He got it for free") and he does a terrific You Are So Beautiful.

I also think he was good at Knebworth. He was great on the drums, his byplay with Mike during Surfer Girl seemed more playful than mean-spirited, and the way he and Mike Meros turned and looked at each other during Surfer Girl was excellent.

But yes, 1981 and beyond was very sad.
425  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: DAMN - Read this. on: February 19, 2009, 08:23:06 PM
So of course they give him a few days in the hospital then fly him right to Florida to work on the new album. Wouldn't that have been a time to try another psychiatrist for Brian?
