Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If 15 Big Ones was a completely originals album

Maybe Soulful Old Man Sunshine (with a minor vocal tweak) to replace one of the songs? I've been working on alternate albums for the time being as well. My (still WIP) version of 15 Big Ones still uses both covers and originals but makes some changes here and there.
I agree. I've thought if they wanted to keep it at 15, they could have dumped two or three covers (any except Rock and Roll Music, which they needed to be a single, and Just Once in Life) and put on Soulful, Loop De Loop and San Miguel.

Live every artist's catalogue, the Boys have quite a few duds in theirs too. But the bottom of the barrel has got to be Summer Of Love. I still cringe when I think why Carl allowed that mess to be released to the public!
But he didn't want to work on Brian's songs in 1995 because he didn't think they were good enough. Amazing.

Thank you so much for this. Really fascinating. Brian's speaking voice almost sounds like it did in the 60s. This must have been during the period where he lost some weight, got healthier, and perhaps gained a little of his voice back (thinking about Matchpoint and that tape of the group singing "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" at the CBS Convention).
It seems like he was doing well under his post-Landy psychologist, Dr. Steve Schwartz until Schwartz died in a rock-climbing accident. I wonder what would have happened if Schwartz had lived.

Honestly, I would do anything to be able to go back in time and see Carl live. Preferably in the late 60s or early 70s but honestly, anytime, anyplace. My biggest Beach Boys regret is that I never saw him perform.
That's my biggest regret, too. I wish I had seen Dennis, but he died when I was 19 and I was just a casual fan. I didn't become a hard-core fan until the first set of two-fers came out in 1990. But as I became a hard-core fan I also became a dumb snob who didn't want to see Mike prance around. And so I never saw Carl. And when I did see Mike, at C50 in 2012, he was great -- as was the whole band. I have a clear choice, but first here are some runners-up, many of which have been mentioned. -- A 1963 Carl, Dennis, Mike, Dave and Al show to document that brief period. -- A 1964 show with Brian in his prime. That Australian "What I Say" show someone mentioned sounds like a great concert, and I'd love top see Australia. -- The "Good Vibrations" debut in Michigan with Brian watching from the wings. -- The 1970 Whiskey A Go-Go show when Brian got on stage. -- Carnegie Hall in 1972. -- 1980 Knebworth. They were great, and Dennis being back added so much. -- Someone on the road crew (I think) told a story of a 1983 show when Brian was playing one of his first shows back and Dennis sang (at least part of) "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother' to him. If that happened, I would have loved to have seen that. But my choice would have to be this one. The Boys kicked ass, and boy was there more to see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsT6BsU9NX8

The Beach Boys have some great lyrics and some bad lyrics, but the one that REALLY bugs me is "Christmas comes this time each year." Yeah, no sh*t, Sherlock. I love "Little Saint Nick," but that part could have easily had a lyric to fit that melody line, like "Christmas is my favorite time" or "Christmas time is gettin' close" or "I'm so glad it's Christmas time" or "How I love this time of year" or something that takes four seconds to write, like it just did for me.
And so this isn't taken as a just "bash Mike" post, "I don't know where but she sends me there" may be my favorite Beach Boys lyric, and, in a differing opinion from another person in this post, I really like his vocal on "That's Not Me."

Thank you so much! Dennis looked pretty good, considering the time period. Now if only somebody could re-upload the 8mm footage of the 1982 Allentown show. Brian's condition was quite shocking, to put it mildly. I thought the same thing about Dennis. And thanks to the uploader, too.

I agree with the original poster about Marcella, Angel Come Home and Constant Companion.
I wish the Beach Boys had found Jack Rieley before they had left Capitol. I think Jack would have known not to waste Breakaway and Celebrate the News on a single Capitol was never going to promote. Give Capitol We're Together again and a cover for the B-side, then use Breakaway/Celebrate The News as a selling point to get a new deal, while beginning the image makeover (no more stage uniforms, longer and better shows, etc.) that restored their credibility.
THEN you release Breakaway and watch it become a million and two seller. :-)

There's a picture of the Beach Boys meeting Princess Margaret in 1971. She was substantially older than Dennis, not a great beauty and was married, but she had the reputation for being the "naughty" member of the royal family. I wonder if Dennis at least tried to bed a princess.

I remember reading something many years ago where Brian was talking about how special "In My Room" was. He said he taught Dennis and Carl the song "Ivory Tower," and they would sing it softly in three-part harmony in their room after Murry would get angry and violent. It would bring them comfort.
Maybe that's what she was referring to, and said "recording" by mistake.
A young, popular artist admires Brian's work and asked him to appear on her album. We don't have to go all Andrew G. Doe on her if her facts aren't 100 percent correct.

Hal definitely saw Dennis play drums on "Dance, Dance, Dance" because Hal was handling the sleigh bells, tambourine and castanets while Dennis was manning the drum kit.
There may have been other instances, but even if it was only this one song, Hal knows better than to see Dennis didn't play on Beach Boys records.
