Nice video.

I really enjoy "I'm So Young," but it seemed to me that earlier Brian had written his own version of the song with "We'll Run Away," about being too young to get married.

"We'll Run Away" is one of my favorites, by the way,

Wow he sounded great!
28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If 15 Big Ones was a completely originals album on: April 18, 2020, 09:08:53 PM
Maybe Soulful Old Man Sunshine (with a minor vocal tweak) to replace one of the songs?  I've been working on alternate albums for the time being as well.  My (still WIP) version of 15 Big Ones still uses both covers and originals but makes some changes here and there.

I agree. I've thought if they wanted to keep it at 15, they could have dumped two or three covers (any except Rock and Roll Music, which they needed to be a single, and Just Once in Life) and put on Soulful, Loop De Loop and San Miguel.

Live every artist's catalogue, the Boys have quite a few duds in theirs too. But the bottom of the barrel has got to be Summer Of Love. I still cringe when I think why Carl allowed that mess to be released to the public!

But he didn't want to work on Brian's songs in 1995 because he didn't think they were good enough. Amazing.

Sad to see Carl in rough shape, too. He wipes his nose with his hand then looks at his hand. I'm not sure if he's looking for blood or cocaine.

Thank you so much for this.  Really fascinating.  Brian's speaking voice almost sounds like it did in the 60s.  This must have been during the period where he lost some weight, got healthier, and perhaps gained a little of his voice back (thinking about Matchpoint and that tape of the group singing "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring" at the CBS Convention).

It seems like he was doing well under his post-Landy psychologist, Dr. Steve Schwartz until Schwartz died in a rock-climbing accident. I wonder what would have happened if Schwartz had lived.

This would be the same Mike Love who didn't want to play Monterey Pop because Coke was one of the sponsors.
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If you could go any Beach Boy concert in history on: October 19, 2019, 07:51:52 PM
Honestly, I would do anything to be able to go back in time and see Carl live.  Preferably in the late 60s or early 70s but honestly, anytime, anyplace.  My biggest Beach Boys regret is that I never saw him perform.

That's my biggest regret, too. I wish I had seen Dennis, but he died when I was 19 and I was just a casual fan. I didn't become a hard-core fan until the first set of two-fers came out in 1990. But as I became a hard-core fan I also became a dumb snob who didn't want to see Mike prance around. And so I never saw Carl. And when I did see Mike, at C50 in 2012, he was great -- as was the whole band.

I have a clear choice, but first here are some runners-up, many of which have been mentioned.

-- A 1963 Carl, Dennis, Mike, Dave and Al show to document that brief period.

-- A 1964 show with Brian in his prime. That Australian "What I Say" show someone mentioned sounds like a great concert, and I'd love top see Australia.

-- The "Good Vibrations" debut in Michigan with Brian watching from the wings.

-- The 1970 Whiskey A Go-Go show when Brian got on stage.

-- Carnegie Hall in 1972.

-- 1980 Knebworth. They were great, and Dennis being back added so much.

-- Someone on the road crew (I think) told a story of a 1983 show when Brian was playing one of his first shows back and Dennis sang (at least part of) "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother' to him. If that happened, I would have loved to have seen that.

But my choice would have to be this one. The Boys kicked ass, and boy was there more to see.

36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Peeves - The small things that grinds your gears listening to The Beach Boys on: July 26, 2019, 08:40:24 PM
The Beach Boys have some great lyrics and some bad lyrics, but the one that REALLY bugs me is "Christmas comes this time each year." Yeah, no sh*t, Sherlock. I love "Little Saint Nick," but that part could have easily had a lyric to fit that melody line, like "Christmas is my favorite time" or "Christmas time is gettin' close" or "I'm so glad it's Christmas time" or "How I love this time of year" or something that takes four seconds to write, like it just did for me.

And so this isn't taken as a just "bash Mike" post, "I don't know where but she sends me there" may be my favorite Beach Boys lyric, and, in a differing opinion from another person in this post, I really like his vocal on "That's Not Me."

Too bad Big Sur had already been out at that point because the outtake version would’ve fit very well in this lineup

Didn't stop Elton John with Grey Seal.

Or the Boys with Help Me Ronda and Help Me Rhonda. :-)
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 2014 Ernie Knapp Interview (1981-82 Beach Boys Touring Bass Player) on: June 10, 2019, 02:55:35 PM
I've never known Brian to play anything other than bass guitar or piano/keyboards during a concert.

In the early days, when it was just the five of them, didn't Brian play drums when the hard-working drummer came up to sing The Wanderer?
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian postponing tour the day before it starts. on: June 06, 2019, 09:36:11 PM
I have enough great memories of seeing Brian onstage and music that he made to carry me through the rest of my life.

I hope will all my heart that Brian enjoys the rest of HIS life -- and realizes all the love he has earned and all the joy he's brought to the world.

Looks like the Internet Wayback Machine has the two 1982 Candlestick clips archived. It took a bit of work to get to these direct links, but these should work:

Thank you so much!  Grin Dennis looked pretty good, considering the time period.

Now if only somebody could re-upload the 8mm footage of the 1982 Allentown show. Brian's condition was quite shocking, to put it mildly.

I thought the same thing about Dennis.

And thanks to the uploader, too.

I agree with the original poster about Marcella, Angel Come Home and Constant Companion.

I wish the Beach Boys had found Jack Rieley before they had left Capitol. I think Jack would have known not to waste Breakaway and Celebrate the News on a single Capitol was never going to promote. Give Capitol We're Together again and a cover for the B-side, then use Breakaway/Celebrate The News as a selling point to get a new deal, while beginning the image makeover (no more stage uniforms, longer and better shows, etc.) that restored their credibility.

THEN you release Breakaway and watch it become a million and two seller. :-)

Marshall Crenshaw put out great record after great record in the '80s and never had the sales to show for it.
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis' Voice 1980-1981 on: October 21, 2018, 10:10:55 PM
In the 1983 Seattle show, when Carl is singing "What You Do to Me," Dennis at one point goes over and joins Al at a microphone to sing background, with his hand to his ear the way he liked to do. But I can't actually hear his voice.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis’s Women on: September 02, 2018, 11:14:57 PM
There's a picture of the Beach Boys meeting Princess Margaret in 1971. She was substantially older than Dennis, not a great beauty and was married, but she had the reputation for being the "naughty" member of the royal family. I wonder if Dennis at least tried to bed a princess.

Brian was pretty damn high when he was making these songs. Things might not always make sense.

Don't believe me? Check out "Brian Falls Into a Microphone."  LOL

I remember reading something many years ago where Brian was talking about how special "In My Room" was. He said he taught Dennis and Carl the song "Ivory Tower," and they would sing it softly in three-part harmony in their room after Murry would get angry and violent. It would bring them comfort.

Maybe that's what she was referring to, and said "recording" by mistake.

A young, popular artist admires Brian's work and asked him to appear on her album. We don't have to go all Andrew G. Doe on her if her facts aren't 100 percent correct.

Looking at that "Wipeout" shot, it's amazing how skinny Brian got for a while under Landy.
49  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hal Blaine, Larry King - 1990 on: October 25, 2017, 10:09:30 AM
Hal definitely saw Dennis play drums on "Dance, Dance, Dance" because Hal was handling the sleigh bells, tambourine and castanets while Dennis was manning the drum kit.

There may have been other instances, but even if it was only this one song, Hal knows better than to see Dennis didn't play on Beach Boys records.

I like it a lot. And I may be crazy, but the song I thought of during the verses was "Santa's Beard."
