Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jack Rieley has passed...

I wish the Boys had found Jack when they were getting ready to leave Capitol. I can picture him telling him there was no way they could gave a label they were leaving Breakaway/Celebrate the News. I picture him having the Boys fulfill their contact with We're Together Again and a cover for the B-side, then using Breakaway and Celebrate the News to get them their next deal, as in "Brian is still writing and producing great songs, and the rest of the band is stepping up too, like on this one from Dennis."
Then he'd have them reestablish cred before releasing the single, so that DJs wouldn't turn down the Beach Boys (as Fred Vail) related because they were not cool. Maybe Breakaway released a a single in 1970 could have been the big commercial comeback they needed.
It's been alluded to, but Jack Rieley was Carl's Van Dyke Parks, writing pretty sounding lyrics that are incomprehensible (Feel Flows) and lyrics that tell the Native Americans' mistreatment at the hands of the white man (Trader).
Rest in peace, Jack.
And every time someone else in the story dies -- which is happening much to frequently now -- it's always amazing to think that Brian Wilson, probably months away from death in 1982, has outlived another one.
Rock on, Brian! And Al, Dave, Mike, Bruce, Blondie, Ricky and everyone else who is still with us.

It's great to hear he wants to do another one. From what's come out from No Pier Pressure, it seems like he's on a roll.
But just because he's going to work on an album this year doesn't mean it will be OUT this year.
Whenever it comes out, I'll look forward to it.

The thing is, this is why the album has guest spots. Promo, promo, promo.
Fallon gave the reunited Beach Boys a HUGE portion of his show in 2012. Letterman has had Brian and the BBs on a lot over the years. Brian's people need to arrange Brian and his "guests" to hit New York for a couple of nights. For Letterman, with its older demographic, have Brian, Al and Blondie do "Sail Away" and "The Right Time" (id Dave will give them a second song) and for Fallon and his younger audience, have Brian and Nate do "Saturday Night." And if Fallon gives them a second song, you can see if Zoe, Kasey or Sebu is available.

Well in the BS Landy/Brian biography Landy made sure to put something in there about how he was going to SAVE Denny next and obviously ran out of time.
My two cents. I give Landy nearly NO credit in any form. A thousand reputable doctors could have/should have treated Brian. People speculate on what if's here all the time. What if a true doctor, instead of that hack that drugged the hell out of Brian, had helped him.
Not just that. The book blames Carl for supposedly wanting to wait until after Christmas to begin Dennis' treatment. He is indirectly blamed for Dennis' death on his older brother's autobio-- it must have been heartbreaking for Carl. Yes, that was despicable. As I recall (the copy I had of that awful book is long since gone), the book said that part of the treatment would have been an intervention, and since Carl figured -- probably correctly -- that Dennis would put up a big fight and probably make things ugly, that Carl decided to wait until after the first of the year to spare Audree any drama during the holiday season. Of course, what that book DIDN'T mention is that Carl had tried to get Dennis help for years and had offered to have the Beach Boys pay for the treatment and buy the Harmony back for Dennis if he stayed clean. Pointing all that out would have gotten in the way of Landy's agenda.

A couple of people have brought up what I was thinking as I started to read this thread: One of the great "what ifs" in BW/BB history is what if Dr. Steve Schwartz hadn't been killed in 1977. It seemed like Brian was doing well with him. Does anyone "in the know" know that for sure.
Imagine what could have been if 1977 Brian had an ETHICAL doctor to help him work through his issues.

My sister and brother-in-law saw Frankie with the current incarnation of Four Seasons about 3 or 4 years and said while his voice had obviously lost something, he still was very good. I never saw the movie Jersey Boys but saw it on stage three times and loved it. Rag Doll, Bye Bye Baby, Beggin', Big Girls Don't Cry and Everybody Knows My Name are among my favorites, but maybe my favorite is this very obscure one from 1972 that apparently was a hit in England but never released as a single in America. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTyC7qY41Bo

I've said this before here, but when they had all the momentum going into 15 Big Ones, I can't believe the boys didn't kill a couple of the covers and put Soulful Old Man Sunshine (with Carl fixing his flub) and San Miguel (fine as is).
The album needed more originals, and while I can understand leaving stuff like WIBNTLA and Carry Me Home to keep a "fun in the sun" sound like Endless Summer, there's no excuse for putting out lame covers while gems like that were available.
Who cares if they had been recorded years earlier? They would have been "new" to 99.9 percent of the public in 1976 and really boosted the quality of 15 Big Ones.

Well in the 70s I think he was. They needed his songs more than they realized. I bet WIBNTLA wouldn't have been shelved for 42 years if he had been in another group.
Don't forget, Dennis himself was the one who decided to shelve it. If Dennis had been flexible about the album's sequencing, it would have come out in 1971.

Haven't had a Beach Boys dream. When I was much younger I had a dream that Sammy Hagar invited me to Van Halen's home studio to listen to unreleased Van Halen songs. It was so cool to actually hear completed songs in my dream only to wake up and realize that they don't exist which was really annoying because I could remember parts of them.
That's what dreams are made of.

I would think Dennis and Mike had some respect for each other's talent and so they collaborated with each other. And don't forget Dennis had Mike do the vocal on "All I Want to Do," even though it would have suited Dennis well, too. Af course, Dennis chose to handle the tag on that one. "Sound of Free" was released in Europe only, right? It's too bad it didn't come out in the U.S. (before Made in California). Obviously I'm a big fan of the song. As for their personal relationships, I have to think that up until the airport tarmac blowup in 1977 that there were still good moments. The Timothy White book describes a 1976 session where Brian (and presumably Timothy White) walked in on a very friendly conversation between Dennis, Mike and Stan. That's where Dennis said how much he loved "The Wiz" on Broadway.
