hard sell, dude

I'd just like to give a shout-out to the Bob Welch FM (1971-74). He had several truly great songs which have held up quite nicely: hypnotized, future games, sentimental lady, etc. Future games still makes my hair stand up (what's left of it). The dude had magic.

Disney Boy, too cool for school. I guess murder humour is your cup of tea. 'Comic effect'...you mean like the joke about Manson blowing the black guy away and stuffing him down a well. That was quite a howler, whaddnit? No one spins a yarn like Mr. Love. Of course he was only 'exaggerating'...after all it might sell a few more copies before it goes to the bargain bin.

There must be an inner Hank in all of us. I switch over to it while reading and a strange logic makes everything he says so clear and real. Hank is a free man. Who doesn't want that? Stream of consciousness unburdened by convention. Rave On, it don't come easy...

Hopeless love thangs are such a downer. No pain no gain. If you still have the capacity to be truly hurt, congratulate yourself. It means you're a healthy human. I don't know the details of your situation, how close you really got, but I hope you didn't hear it through the grapevine. At any rate, there's a great song in there somewhere.
6  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Songs about unrequited love on: August 22, 2016, 03:28:48 AM
Not to date myself, but how about 'RUNNING BEAR AND LITTLE WHITE DOVE'?
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Favorite songs to listen to under the influence on: August 03, 2016, 03:27:59 AM
I'm new to the forum, and would like to start my first thread with a silly question, that may have been asked before? What are you're favorite songs/albums you listen to whilst under the influence? Mine are:

Cabin Essence
Good Vibrations
Don't talk
Walk on by (BBoys cover)
Future Games, Emerald Eyes (Fleetwood Mac)

Walk on By (BBoys) and Future Games (god bless Bob Welch) are 2 songs that put me under the influence....can't get enough of either!!!

As someone who has had the misfortune of following this thread----who doesn't like a good train-wreck?----I would like to offer some (perhaps unwanted) 'wisdom' about the downer dynamics going on. When someone is so heavily invested in their personal reality and world view that they cannot tolerate the remote possibility that they might conceivably be on shaky ground on any given subject, that person should be ignored. Only a masochist would insert one's self into an 'argument' or debate with such a person. It's like Charley Brown trying one more time to kick that damn football! We all know that Lucy's gonna pull it back at the last second...every time! I guess dancing alone is boring, but who wants to be tap danced into the floor? Me? I am just a wall flower at this orgy.
9  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Campaign 2016 on: July 24, 2016, 02:19:41 AM
I think the Green Party is the only sane alternative. This whole argument that a vote for a third party is a vote for fascism is a canard. Hillary just wants to win no matter what and has no real agenda other than please vote for me! She's a bigger Hawk than Trump and in choosing Kaine, a decent dude I'm sure but a big supporter of Big Money and the Too Big To Fail Crowd. The Dems are just shoveling more of the same and counting on the anyone but Trump vote. Jill Stein would appear to be the only sane, coherent choice left. Come on Bernie stand up and stand up!

What's a redneck to do? I used to wonder why soup du jour never tasted the same at our little bistro...
11  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Beach Boys playing for Trump on: July 02, 2016, 02:06:18 AM
Ouch! I feel badly bullied...I've never been called a dumb f*** before LOL. Moderators help! Actually I was reading the name same as brother woody until I squinted a few times...nope, not filled da page as my mind was telling me. I just don't see her as a beach girl, but then I should open my mind.
12  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Beach Boys playing for Trump on: July 01, 2016, 11:19:40 PM
I know this is slightly off topic, but what does the name 'filledplage' refer to? I know I'm a bit slow out of the gate, but I feel like I'm missing something here. Thanks.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Happy Birthday Brian on: June 21, 2016, 02:23:10 AM
Brian, Thanks for living on this planet during my time here... you have kept it spinning with your great whimsical music. You are a great soul who has given so much to so many. May you be content in that knowledge. Enjoy the Day!
14  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Pet Sounds Forum on: June 19, 2016, 11:39:29 PM
Agree that it's time to move on. Nothing to be gained by grinding this issue into the ground. Let's return to the music.
15  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: R.I.P. Henry McCullough on: June 19, 2016, 11:32:18 PM
I'm not saying that his post Beatle career is a wash-out...just that he was like Brian, a true genius of the sixties, but seriously lost his mojo in the seventies...or could only access it on occasion (Band on the Run is great). I'd loved to have seen him immersed with some strong and powerful band mates pushing some artistic limits...he could have done anything, but instead all those silly ditties (Silly Little Love Songs, What the Man Said, Etc.....)...what a waste of talent (imho).
16  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: R.I.P. Henry McCullough on: June 19, 2016, 02:34:54 AM
Sad footnote in rock history. Which leads me back to the main stage: just read a related article on Paul in the Guardian <https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/may/24/paul-mccartney-i-was-depressed-after-the-beatles-broke-up-bbc-mastertapes-show> about the early days of Wings, etc. Interesting stuff. A bit more real than usual. He admits that he and Linda sucked as a music combo and had even considered giving Eric, Jimmy Page and John Bonham a phone call in his post Beatle depression. I've always thought that if Paul had challenged himself with some motivated creative talent early on he might have...woulda, coulda, shoulda....kept me from nodding off!
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: CONCERT: National Memorial Day Concert for 2016 with The Beach Boys on: June 09, 2016, 03:16:57 AM
I just checked in on this thread after some time away, so here's my 2 cents. I don't doubt that Stephen Desper is a consummate pro in regards to sound technology matters and what is and has been done to sweeten the experience for all of us viewers in TV land. But sometimes too much sugar makes me feel a bit pukey...and that's the experience with this broadcast for me! There's just so much phoniness in this world that we are told to swallow....at what point do we gag and say 'enough'. I don't care if these guys are great singers, I crave the experience of a live performance, warts and all...let me have the real live experience and judge for myself. Stupid happy expressions lip synching to pre-recorded tracks just turns me off! Next you'll be telling me Neil Young does it all the time (I somehow doubt it)....
18  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Thread for arguments with or about moderation on: June 02, 2016, 02:19:33 AM
Andrew I feel a lot of passive aggressive anger in your post. Why do you care so much about the opinions of a few noisy posters on this site? It seems to me more a letter from the trenches than from the ivory tower you claim to inhabit. Just an unwanted observation to be deleted!
19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: RARE 1969 Paris Concert footage + mixer's comments on: May 16, 2016, 08:01:52 AM
Thanks for this footage. It erased any doubts in my mind that the guys could play their own instruments and put on a flawless show. I really dug watching all of them, sorry Dennis was not in 'sight' so much. Kudos to Bruce on the keyboards and bass...great to see.
20  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Scott Bennett discussion thread on: May 14, 2016, 08:52:39 PM
Bullshit. NOBODY is immune to any criticism. I call it like I see it, always have and always will.  If it was off limits to criticize Brian, don't you think the Bubs/Dudd thread would've been shut down?

To stoke the conspiratorial fires, I believe the Bubs/Dudd thread was indeed locked a few days ago.

mistake!
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bubs & Judd Review No Pier Pressure on: May 09, 2016, 02:40:45 AM
What was so cool about this was that someone's real feel for the album was able to be expressed without an immediate fierce response from certain folks who are extremely protective of all things Brian.....you guys obviously love Brian enough to care deeply about what comes down the pike. Keep up the yuks, so refreshing....
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What celebrities have the BBs met? on: May 08, 2016, 06:31:28 AM
Muhammad Ali...who came to enjoy that special night.  You know...when Mike made speech[es].  Ahhh!
Santa Claus...who obviously inspired several lps.   Old Man
Me. Wink
As for the Mike/Muhammad Ali connection at the HOF speech debacle, when Mike returned to his table after his great moment, Ali congratulated him: "You rocked, Mike" (according to Mike on the Howard Stern show). I can dig the attraction...he was mimicking the master with his I am the Greatest rant...
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rocky Pamplin book about The Beach Boys? on: January 27, 2016, 01:26:49 AM
I propose anyone deranged enough to follow this post, or reply to it, deserves a cold c*ck to the cold cuts. I'm sure Rocky can rise to the occasion.

Which is well worth reading if you haven't, folks: http://www.lewisshiner.com/liberation/glimpses.pdf

Also, I would've turned up at the BRI meeting for the licensing agreement and screamed NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooOooooooooooooooo!

This novel 'glimpses' is available online and is great...feel like you're right there with 1966 Brian and entourage....highly recommend for all you sixties trippers.....
