I bet we'd all be surprised [if we asked] by how little contact or interaction many people who express opinions have had with the subject of their opining.
Actually, you'd be surprised in some cases how much interaction people who have expressed opinions have actually had with certain people. I know I was. :/

I have some very strong feelings about this but I do want to maintain my tact. Let me just say that Mike's resentment of Brian was not nearly as present before 1978. Mike went down the wrong road artistically, but Brian isn't artistically infallible either. Brian sure has comeback since 1999, but before that there was 20 years where only the 88 LP really offered some hope. I think Leaf is a member of Brian's version of the Memphis Mafia. Malibu Mafia perhaps . Seriously though he overreached and forgot that these are real people he is writing about with real feelings. Marilyn, Mike, Al, even Dennis and Carl didn't get a fair shake by the man. Yes trotting Brian out on stage in the late 70s and early 80s was very much something that he was right to condemn. Yes Brian has had some very regrettable problems caused by a dysfunctional family, but his drug use, overeating, and lack of drive hurt him as much as anyone else ever could. He made the choice to do these things and one of the things I like about him is that he is willing to admit his fault in doing that. I think it's unfair for 1965 suburban kids and their wives to be condemned for not understanding what Brian was going through.
Zander's list is good though I have no problem with TM and would credit Brian and his band for the comeback more then Leaf. Agree 100%

I still think the first and third ones were the best. But good Lord...the 6th one was not only the worst of the series, but one of the worst movies I have EVER seen. I didn't see the 7th one where they went to Moscow, though.
Did you guys know they are actually making an *eighth* movie?! And yes, George Gaynes will be in there to play Cmdt. Lassard...even though he turns 90 in May!
No Tackleberry though, as the actor died some while back...

I'm reliably informed that, early in his solo touring career, Brian was told to do something with his hands, as opposed to just sitting there and reading the autocues (check out the 1998 Lake Charles show - cigar store Indian, anyone ?). Don't think them as told him expected him to do what he's been doing ever since. I cherish an NME review from 2002 that said (I paraphrase slightly) "Brian didn't so much sing "Surf's Up" as semaphore it". I guess we're all used (inured ?) to it, but for newcomers it can be hilarious, or disturbing. Sometimes both.
Glad you posted that, as I remember that Lake Charles show and he looked stiff. Same as the Farm Aid performace. Just be thankful that he hasn't tried dancing like he did when he performed with Deana Carter that same year!

Journey....I'm sorry, but Steve Perry's voice is like scraping a cat with a cheese grater to me. Guns N Roses...People actually liked this crap? I don't understand how Axl Rose can sing like that and still be a homophobe. Slash's style of guitar playing is exactly what I hated about 80s rock...all flash, no substance.

Thus far, excepting the late Eugene Landy, I've only had one person directly involved with the BB that really got my goat. And no, it's not who you're thinking. If it's who I think, then you're definitely not the only writer who's has the problem. Slightly OT (and blowing my own trumpet), but my March 1985 trip to LA was pretty much a fan's wet dream. Over a week, with a LOT of help from many good people (a big thanks to Raymond J. McCarthy), I managed to meet and in some cases interview:
Bruce (who also brought me lunch and asked me down to the studio - Westlake Audio: they were doing the final mix) Carl Alan Brian (all in the studio) Van Dyke Parks (excellent evening spent at his house, almost no BB stuff discussed !) Stevie Kalinich (bought me dinner, showed me original lyrics) Stephen Desper (chauffeured me around BBs LA for a day, played some interesting tapes, gave me a tour of Capitol Tower & studio, also Western 3, bought me lunch, and set it up for me to meet) Chuck Britz (spoke to him for a couple of hours in the control room of Western 3 - does it get any better ? A total gentleman) Jasper Dailey (told me some great BW stories, bought me Sunday breakfast in Rodeo Drive - another lovely man)
Yeah... what a week. And cheap - everyone was buying me food. Smiley Seriously, all these people took time - in some cases a whole day - out of their often busy lives to indulge the mad Englishman. Chuck was still working at Western, Bruce was mixing, Steve Desper was in the middle of a project. I have nothing but the very best memories of that week, and those people, some now sadly departed. What a seriously cool story! Talk about a memory of a lifetime...

1) I hate the little hand-motions all pop singers seem to make these days, as if it helps them find and hold pitch. That's an old tradition dating back from the days of doo-wop. Just another variation, only much, much worse. But yeah, it is annoying, but at least it's not "jazz hands" *shudder*
