Plus BWPS had almost 40 years of hype. But yeah, I dig what you're saying. Why in hell it took so long (relatively speaking of course!) in the UK is beyond me. Also too, he performed it many more times in the UK than in the US, so maybe it'll do better here due to less saturation...?
I dunno. Feel like I'm grasping at straws or something.

Good point Brother John, but Brian (and the Beach Boys, too, for that matter), have usually been more popular in the UK than in the US, which means either it's going to bomb in the US, or is actually going to outsell the UK version by a large margin, which I don't think anyone saw coming.
Hell, maybe it's because the UK version supposedly sounds like ass in comparison.
Luther, I agree 100%.

You know what BriMel and Capitol should have done? Get Brian an iPod commercial. Going Home would be perfect for that, I think.
Great idea. Hey, it worked for the Stones & "She's a rainbow" in that one commercial from a few years ago.

You know, now that I watch Midnight's Another Day again, I think they're playing along to a track. Brian's vocal seems to be live, and I think the band's vocals are, too. But you can hear strings on there-- unless Darian is playing them on the keyboard off camera. Also on Going Home, where's that horn sound coming from? Brian's vocals are definitely live.

I'd pay good money to see Brian on piano with Jeff plus maybe Billy in a small informal venue. Same format as the Jeff/ Billy shows I read about in the UK a few years back. Q and A session, requests and sing-a-long. Stories from long ago and new and old tunes.
No money in it but would be great for Brian to get close to his fans but in a way that would make him comfortable.
Amen.

I was just wondering if you have specific knowledge of "the touching up", and what exactly was done. Or are you just assuming it was done? Usually on the Aol Sessions, the lead is either live with the backing music being mimed to a pre-recorded track, or the entire thing is lip-synched. This one, though....we all know Brian can't lipsynch well, so in this case I'm not sure. Brian sounds great, though.

Exactly. Have him as part of his band, not the feature presentation itself.
Not what I meant. I meant Brian out there by himself, singing and playing the piano. Like the SNL Good Vibrations performance, just not coked up.

Heck, even if Brian was playing the piano and singing by himself it would be an improvement. Keep in mind I'm just talking about for TV appearances. But if they had Brian & the piano turned to the side (so brian doesn't have to look directly at the audience) and Brian was just banging away on the piano & singing, it would be a 1000x imrprovement. When ever there's a documentary, or an interview piece, or anything like that, where Brian's singing & playing the piano, he sounds good 95% of the time.
Then again, anything beats his early solo appearances where he was just mashing his hands against a turned off keyboard like a stroke victim.

That being said, I am not a supporter of the theory that Brian intentionally tried to sound more "manly", or purposely ruined his voice. I just don't believe he would do that, regardless of his mental state. He was a lot things; I don't think masochism was one of them. I tend to blame it on the effects of snorting hugh quantities of cocaine on his vocal chords.
Wasn't just a theory, as Brian has admitted to intentionally trying to sabotage his voice. Tom Waits did the same thing. Then again, that's not much of a stretch, as Wait's voice has always been garbage. What I've always wondered is what was the band's reaction to Brian's vocal decline. I mean, they had to have seen the signs before anyone else would've.

That said, the DVD was kind of a circle-jerk. I am sick of hearing about all Brian's been through in context with his latest work, as it sounds mitigatory to me and I don't believe he is in need of explanations for his new work. It stands up with the rest of his catalogue and is the latest in a line of albums that includes "Today!" "Summer Days..." "Pet Sounds" "Love You" "Brian Wilson 1988" "SMiLe" and now this... and I believe that it's his best solo record. So the condescending, apologetic tone of his EPK pisses me off, just as I can't stand how every foda interview with him begins with Q: How are you feeling today? A: A lot better, it has been rough this past [Year/Month/5 years] but I am coming out of it now. Ask him some questions relating to the music! A lot of us care about it, you know... Well put. What really flips my sh*t is that it comes across as "You know how we said Brian's Back? Well he wasn't, not really. But he's back now! Honest!"

Rob...Damn right the Farm Aid 98 was worse. Hell, I'd rank that up with Long Beach 1981 for worst ever Brian performance, as at least back then he had an excuse.
Viewing it online right now. I'm so sick of that Friday's ad.
Ehh...not one of Brian's best performances. Great song choice, but he sang it way too reserved. If he'd have busted out his "Drive-in" style vocal, it would have been better.

- the line "First love is the moment you can't repeat but you'll always own it" could be in reference to the song "Surfer Girl", the first song Brian wrote
... except that it wasn't the first song he wrote. Another myth shattered.

Was pondering this a minute ago... It looks more and more like the majority of the albums are becoming increasingly hard to find. It's the mid 90s all over again. Pet Sounds is easy to find, of course, but the other albums are being replaced it seems by more and more compilations. What the hell's the deal with that? You'd think, with the Wilson name in the news this year (Dennis & Brian) with hot (re-)releases, you'd think the band's material would more readily available...yet, not so. I wonder what gives.
