I thought it sounded great. Had a really nice sound throughout. First song was my favourite but they are all very good.

Thank you so much for listening! Glad you enjoyed it Smiley

Saw this with a buddy on mine about a week ago. Very good movie, and I had no idea it would feature a BB tune, so I was super excited when I heard one. It was incredibly well-placed within the film, as every song is.

I've got it bookmarked, R. :=)

Thanks so much, I hope you enjoy it!  Smiley

I like it! There's a good feel that moves through the whole album. There's an art to this-- so i'm impressed you knocked it out on your first try!

It does seem a bit same-y at parts, but that doesn't really hurt the album in any way. (Trying to give a bit of constructive criticism to a great work is hard haha)

GREAT work!

Wow, thank you! I appreciate it so much!

Addressing your constructive criticism (which I definitely can see, some songs are pretty similar haha) - On my next album (probably coming out later this year, considering this one took about two weeks to make), I definitely wanna try to expand my songwriting and get some different moods.

Again, thank you so much for listening and getting back to me, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

This is super tough, and it would be even harder if I included Brian's solo work. Anyways, here is my top 20 (at the moment, it is always changing outside the top 7 or so):

1. God Only Knows
2. Good Vibrations
3. I Just Wasn't Made for These Times
4. Wouldn't It Be Nice
5. All I Wanna Do
6. Caroline, No
7. Please Let Me Wonder
8. Heroes & Villains
9. Surf's Up
10. We'll Run Away
11. Let Him Run Wild
12. Don't Worry Baby
12. Busy Doin Nothin
13. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
14. You're Still A Mystery
15. I'll Bet He's Nice
16. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on my Shoulder)
17. You Still Believe In Me
18. (Wouldn't It Be Nice To) Live Again
19. In My Room
20. The Little Girl I Once Knew

Even at 20 I feel like I'm leaving out so many. What a discography

My jaw literally dropped when I saw it. As a diehard fan of The Beach Boys and Tim Heidecker, I never thought the two would collide. I was in shock, and then I began laughing hysterically. Can't wait for the episode, makes me so happy that Al has the same sense of humor I do  Grin

Fantastic review, Emily!

I forgot to mention in my brief review that it was actually my first ever concert (I'm turning 21 very soon so I guess I'm a late concert bloomer  Grin). If it sounded like I had seen it all before, it was solely based on the multitude of YouTube videos I had to live off of till I finally got the chance the see him live myself on Sunday night. It truly is incredible seeing Brian live. After so many years of holding him in high regard, he had reached an almost mythological status in my mind until I finally saw him up close and realized that indeed this man who has provided my favorite music and inspired me to make music was in the very same room as me and so many others that have been touched by his music.

Definitely was an experience I will never forget!

Went to the Grand Prairie show last night. Was a great show, Brian had a great energy for a majority of the show. The first set was insane, especially when Blondie came out. His leads and guitar solos were great as was his stage presence. Before "Honkin Down The Highway", Brian said Al wrote and produced it, which Al denied soon after  Grin.

Pet Sounds was solid, Brian was struggling with a few leads here and there but overall it was awesome. "Let's Go Away For Awhile" specifically was masterfully executed by the band.

The encore was amazing. The energy in the theatre was contagious. "Help Me, Rhonda" got the most reception from the crowd in seemed to me. "Proud Mary" wasn't very long (they only covered the chorus if I remember correctly), but people were definitely singing along. Brian seemed pumped to play it.

Overall, it was a fantastic concert. Brian was into it, had some great leads. The band was in pretty much perfect form. What more can you ask for?!

Ps: "Funky Pretty" was very good as well, but I would love them to do "Leave This Town" instead!

Is the mono Pet Sounds on iTunes just folded down mono or is it the original mix?
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Combine \ on: August 04, 2015, 07:07:22 AM
I decided to keep the format of Today, as I think that it's a perfect structure for an album that is just before Pet Sounds. Also I've always thought California Girls would be the perfect opener to an offical BB studio album.

Side 1
1. California Girls
2. Let Him Run Wild
3. Good To My Baby
4. When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)
5. You're So Good To Me
6. Help Me, Rhonda (SDSN Version)

Side 2
1. Please Let Me Wonder
2. I'm So Young
3. Kiss Me, Baby
4. She Knows Me Too Well
5. In The Back Of My Mind
6. And Your Dreams Come True

Someone in the POB Album Discussion Thread (can't think of the username, my apologies) claims that Dennis revealed in interviews that he only listened to his own music. Can anyone confirm/deny this? If it's true, I think that's pretty cool and that's probably why his music is so pure and unique.

P.S. This is my favorite thread on the board. Gained so much BB knowledge from this thread alone. Big thanks to everyone who posts this great info in here.
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thread for various insignificant questions that don't deserve their own thread! on: July 29, 2015, 06:45:15 AM
Was it this?

From "16 Magazine" dated September 1965. The Beach Boys were asked to name the things they HATE and the things they LOVE.

Carl Wilson
I HATE people who make stupid jokes about my hair.
I HATE hot, damp weather.
I HATE getting trapped in crowds: In one arena Glen Campbell—who takes Brian’s place when we are on the read—jumped off the stage first (at the end of the show) and the rest of us didn’t have time to run off before the crowd closed in. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it was a frightening experience.
I HATE getting up to catch an early morning flight. Our road manager, Terry Sachen, gets up one hour ahead of time, and it takes him just that long to get me out of bed!
I HATE people who shove a paper and pencil at you and say, “Sign it.” Kids are too polite to do this—it’s the adults who are rude to us.
I HATE girls who act stuck up.
I HATE having my hair pulled.
I HATE sweet potatoes.
I HATE rude telephone operators.
I LOVE girls with a sense of humor.
I LOVE the clothes Duggie Millings of London makes. He does the suits you see Peter and Gordon and the Beatles wear.
I LOVE my older brother Brian’s sense of humor. He can cheer me up and make me laugh when no else can.
I LOVE girls who can carry on an interesting conversation
I LOVE to listen to LPs. When I was in New York last time, the people at Capitol Records turned me loose in the warehouse and I took tons of records back to L.A. with me. I took LPs by Peter and Gordon, Cilia Black, Laurendo Almeida, the Lettermen, the Beatles and the Four Freshmen—to name a few.
I LOVE water-skiing.
I LOVE the TV show, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
I LOVE the way the Righteous Brothers sing.
I LOVE girls who are cute, but don’t act conceited.
I LOVE food—especially Polynesian dishes.
I LOVE the new house Dennis and I share in the Hollywood Hills. It is ultra-modern, but cozy.

Dennis Wilson
I HATE loud-mouthed phoney people.
I HATE phone calls in the middle of the night.
I HATE artsy-folksy folks who are that way only because they think it is the “in” thing to do.
I HATE girls who call attention to themselves by being noisy.
I HATE to be cooped up in a dressing room or on a plane.
I HATE to go on long car rides unless I am the one who is doing the driving.
I HATE to ever be the least bit sick. I can’t stand lying about.
I HATE to hear people put down other people—for anything.
I HATE teased-up hair styles.
I HATE to see young girls dressed in black or dark sophisticated clothes.
I LOVE to go fishing.
I LOVE the presents that fans give me. We all got lovely identification bracelets from a New York City girl once when were there. It really thrilled us that someone took such pains on our behalf.
I LOVE Chinese food, and my favorite restaurant is Ah Fong’s on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.
I LOVE cars. I have a black Ferrari sports car. I used to race.
I LOVE girls—all kinds, shapes and sizes!
I LOVE to dance, and when I have time of an evening you can find me going through all the latest steps at Gazzari’s in Hollywood.
I LOVE the way Barbara Stressed [sic] sings. When she played the Coconut Grove, I went to see her live nights in a row.
I LOVE to meet the kids who come to see us when we do public appearances.
I LOVE discothèques.
I LOVE all the “group” sounds—both English and American.

Brian Wilson
I HATE so-called “surfin’ music.” It’s a name that people slap on any sound from California. Our music is rightfully “the Beach Boy sound”—if one has to label it.
I HATE to miss gigs. But I’ve missed many lately because of time I have to spend in a relatively calm atmosphere writing our songs and doing all the musical arrangements
I HATE sound men who have a “tin” ear. It’s awful when you go to set up your mikes on the road and the sound people don’t help you work out the proper effects. It’s the audience who suffers most!
I HATE neighbors who complain when I play the piano in the middle of the night. As you may guess, I just had some of the same—and now I have to move again!
I HATE to have to sit around TV studios waiting for our time to go on.
I HATE older people who criticize younger people who are trying to do something.
I HATE people who dont try to understand others.
I HATE immodest, aggressive girls.
I LOVE to compose and arrange—to create and make music.
I LOVE to buy things on impulse. I bought a steam bath (portable) that way.
I LOVE girls with dark olive skin and dark hair.
I LOVE my Cadillac. It is a green El Dorado.
I LOVE “egg-in-the-hole”. It’s about the only thing
I can cook, but it is great. You pinch out the center of a
piece of bread, butter it, place it in a frying pan and put
a raw egg in the hole. The entire thing cooks together
and is very, very tasty.
I LOVE playing baseball. I was center field for the Hawthorne High School team.
I LOVE the English TV show, Ready, Steady, Go Live!
I LOVE to be healthy. I was run-down for a while from over-work, but I started taking vitamins and eating regularly—and now I’m fine.

Al Jardine
I HATE people who ask us what we are going to do when “. . . this is all over” They sound as though the world will end for us when we stop cutting records. We all have plenty of definite plans for the future.
I HATE to be away from home (and my lovely wife, Linda) for too long a time.
I HATE to see adults put us and our music down because they don’t happen to like the sound.
I HATE to see teenage girls run around dressed in a sloppy manner.
I HATE to be kept waiting for anything.
I HATE olives.
I HATE to have to walk anywhere. I guess that’s because in Hollywood you get used to driving everywhere.
I HATE those who said the Beach Boys were a fad and wouldn’t last. Ha! Ha!
I LOVE to be a tourist when I’m on the road. I roam the streets of any new town I visit and try to see all there is to see while I am there.
I LOVE New York City. It is absolutely fascinating— to visit.
I LOVE collecting souvenirs.
I LOVE to see girls with long natural-looking hair.
I LOVE to play Big Casino—a card game.
I LOVE to win when I play Big Casino!
I LOVE to be called by my entire first name—Alan.

Mike Love
I HATE people who barge into your dressing room after a show and make themselves at home.
I HATE for a girl to scream right into my ear, it’s happened in mob scenes a couple of times, and I almost went deaf!
I HATE opera. My mother used to play it real loud in the mornings to wake me up when I was in school—and now I can’t stand it!
I HATE people who try to trick other people.
I HATE girls who adopt a facade or pretend to be “cool” because it’s the thing to do.
I HATE to see girls wear black lace stockings.
I HATE beatniks.
I HATE the way the English use the word artistes to refer to performers. It sounds so pretentious.
I HATE girls who are grubby and dirty. I LOVE Hawaii, Mexico and France.
I LOVE Oriental and near-Eastern types of girls.
I LOVE young girls, for they don’t seem to be as artificial as the older ones.
I LOVE tight jeans.
I LOVE the color blue.
I LOVE fans who really care for you and don’t run after you just because you’re a performer.
I LOVE girls who wear light cologne. My favorite aroma is Casaque.
I LOVE the Beatles’ record, Ticket To Ride.
I LOVE rock and roll music, especially Little Richard and Chuck Berry.
I LOVE the sculpture of Rodin.
I LOVE watches. I just bought a beautiful gold one for a girl—but now I have to find a girl to give it to!
I LOVE—like I said before—GIRLS!

I believe this is it! Thank you so much!

Does anyone have a picture of an old newspaper interview with the boys from I believe 1964-1965ish?

It was like a question and answer game. They asked the Boys' height, weight, preference when it comes to girls, etc.?

I found it online once and stupidly didn't save it.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian Wilson & Songwriting Credits on: July 14, 2015, 06:09:50 PM
I was reading the "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight Appreciation Thread", where I was directed to this old thread: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,14515.25.html ,posted by Jesse Reiswig.

Reading the opening paragraph of that thread, I began to wonder which songs after the 60s that Brian didn't really write, but was given a writing credit.

That post mentions "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight" and "Let It Shine". Any other songs where Brian was given a writing credit but didn't really contribute much? I know "Deirdre" was one.

Also worth nothing that I recently got Apple Music and I am trying to make a massive playlist of songs written by Brian, so it would be nice to know which songs to remove if they weren't, ya know, written by Brian haha.

What's the story behind the instrumental "Why" on the Made in California compilation?

It sounds like it could be from the Paley sessions, but I can't find anything on it.
It's off the MIU sessions - November 18th, 1977.

I see, thank you!

20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Great Brian article/interview in new Rolling Stone magazine. on: June 23, 2015, 07:24:12 AM

Nice video interview with Jason Fine accompanying the story.

Out of curiousity - is the kid at around 3:50 of the video one of Brian's adopted sons? I'm assuming so  Grin

Amazing article btw. I've always wanted an article on Brian's daily life and now we have it. I did find it a bit creepy to list out places Brian visits on a daily basis, but I suppose the family doesn't mind. The part with Brian at his son's basketball game was hilarious, as was the "Foxy lady" part. Very nice stuff. Hopefully more of this stuff is in the upcoming book. That said, I'm buying it regardless.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Van Dyke Barks on: June 21, 2015, 08:34:53 PM
Credit is everything in the music and movie business. I think Van Dyke Parks was in sort of a Wag The Dog situation with Brian and Smile. He was under credited for his some of his contributions and uncredited for others; orchestration for one.

If he has feelings about that, it is perfectly natural and understandable. I don't have a problem with him airing his opinions, observations and feelings on his social media site.

But then...just be an adult and honestly say so. I dont care if he and Brian are friends or what. But if you dont like him, either keep it to yourself or explain why. Dont just fling barbs whenever you get the chance, its not going to get you any respect. However, if he really was the mastermind behind a lot of the arrangements (and not just lyrics) for SMiLE, thats awesome and Id have a lot more respect for him if he just said so. Id believe it too, itd really explain why Brian says hes his best collaborator--because he challenged Brian and forced him to create better music than if he were left to his own devices.

Could you elaborate a bit on the possibility of Van Dyke being the possible mastermind behind the Smile arrangements? I have never heard him contributing more than the lyrics on the project, much less potentially being the mastermind behind the arrangements.  Huh

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: You have 10 Albums….. on: May 22, 2015, 07:56:17 PM
1. Pet Sounds
2. The Smile Sessions (1 disc version)
3. Today!
4. Sunflower
5. Friends
6. Love You
7. Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)
8. That Lucky Old Sun
9. All Summer Long
10. Shut Down Volume II

1-7 was easy. 8-10 was super difficult and many albums could have made the cut instead of the ones listed. Usually depends on my mood.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: You're The Beach Boys, it's 1966, and come home from a tour to find........ on: May 15, 2015, 01:05:57 PM
I think Mike was too into early teenage love, while Brian had Tony Asher help him express what was really important, adult relationships.

I don't think Pet Sounds has to do necessarily with "adult relationships". It still has that sense of young love and innocence, which is then broken by Caroline, No. The difference between Love and Asher is I think Asher was a more mature wordsmith. Ultimately, Brian had them writing similar types of themes, but they had vastly different levels of maturity.
