Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Somebody Please Slap Denny Tedesco into consciousness!

Apologies to rehash this old topic.
Saw the Wrecking Crew film last week in Toronto. If I recall correctly, the only music clip from the Beach Boys used was Fun, Fun, Fun. Also included the video of how the Beach Boys puts a song together (Dennis on the drums, Al on rhythm guitar...) like the Concert version of Little Deuce Coupe, cut just before the beginning of the song and instead playing the intro of FFF. Album covers where the Wrecking Crew played started with Summer Days, and then PS, Today!, and All Summer Long. May have missed others and I don't think I saw Smile. Of course there are many clips with Brian. After the film there was a Q&A with Denny Tedesco but nobody asked questions about the Beach Boys so he didn't address them.
Watching for any suggestion that the Beach Boys "didn't play a note", I didn't get much of that impression and it was more like WC came in when the music got more advanced. That is until an interview clip of Micky Dolenz at the end of the film, where he suggested WC played on almost all the BB hits. Seeing that was a little disappointing. There was also mention of Hal being a better drummer than Dennis. This point did not refer to any specific song.
I'm not an expert by any means and I enjoyed the film overall. Too bad the time didn't really allow in depth analysis of any songs. Hope this "review" is somewhat useful until the film goes into wider release when you can see it for yourselves.

(apologies if this has been mentioned already)
Only had a chance to casually listen to Surfin' USA and Today! so far. I have a question regarding the mono mix of Stoked. Is it me or is the "S" cut off at the beginning and sounds like Mike is singing "TOKED"? Was it always like this? I am only familiar with CD releases so I hope those with original vinyls can answer this.
Thanks!

I was also at the Toronto show and I thought Brian was great! Everybody sounded good and everybody in my section was enjoying the show from beginning to end. Too bad some people left before All Summer Long. Their loss for wanting to beat the rush. Not having read any reviews or set lists, I was pleased to hear Please Let Me Wonder, Salt Lake City, Girl Don't Tell Me, Then I Kissed Her, Dance, Dance, Dance and others, songs that are not always performed.
My only beef with the show was the the balance of the drums with the vocals and other instruments (I don't know the technical terms). I struggled to hear the vocals at many times because the drums were so loud compared to everything else. Massey Hall is known for having great acoustics, so was this just a result of someone messing up during the sound check? I was in the third row of the first balcony, not sure if the same thing was experienced elsewhere. Nevertheless, it was one of the best BW shows I had seen so I am happy.
Another question: Jeff mentioned Brian wrote five No. 1 songs. I can only name three, I Get Around, Help Me, Rhonda and Good Vibrations. What are the others? Thanks.

Another related question probably not worth its own thread.
I'm looking to buy a turntable in the near future and I have the PS stereo/mono coloured vinyls but never listened to them yet. I have the new gold CD and it sounds pretty good (though if I did a blind hearing test from all the versions I have, I would probably fail). Is the recent 180 g vinyl worth obtaining? I'm not a true collector like everyone here, just prefer to get what is easily obtained.
Thanks for your help

I think it's instructive to recall that when it was announced that Bob Ludwig mastered TLOS, you could hear the groans rippling through the BW fan community.
Newbie question: Who decides the mastering engineer for each album? Checked the BW solo CDs and Bob Ludwig is the one doing the mastering, more often than not. Since Smile sounds great (unless I am mistaken), why the groans for this involvement with TLOS (and BWRG?)? Just asking as I have many of the BW vinyls, just no turntable. One of these days I hear how they sound. Just wall decorations for now. PS How does the GIOMH coloured vinyl sound compared to the CD?? Anybody care? Thanks.

Being born in '73, I didn't get to experience the early BBs as many of you described. Still, how were those weird studio "humour" tracks received? I mean Cassius Love vs Sonny Wilson, Our favourite studio sessions, and Bull session with big daddy. I have to say I don't really get them.
In the moment they were thought of as really wacky, irreverent...to hear the band casually goofing off was so totally unexpected. Of course within a couple of years those things sounded dumb as all hell, But at the time they were nearly revolutionary...like Mad magazine or something. Thanks. Good to know I'm not the only one...
