I too was draft age in the 60s. Most guys just dreaded being drafted and being sent to Vietnam. Yes, there were exceptions, and I applaud threir commitment, but most of us guys were really worried about this. It's one of those things you would have had to live through to understand. Every night , on the news, scenes from the war. "Body counts "listed on the TV, like baseball scores. Of course, as we suspected, years later we learned that most of the numbers were fabricated. Almost everyone was scrambling to obtain a deferment. Those that weren't successful usually ended up seeing Southeast Asia, compliments of Uncle Sam.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / New York Times Article on "Love & Mercy"

Today's New York Times ( Sunday May 31st) contains a very nice article of the movie in the Arts and Entertainment section. It's not a review of the movie, but an overview of two different actors playing Brian. Article is a half page in length with four photos. The article notes that originally there was going to be a THIRD Brian, who would play the bedroom years. I am looking at the physical copy of the newspaper. Perhaps someone can find it online and post it here.

Actually it is a book by columnist Bob Greene and his experiences touring with Jan & Dean a few weeks a summer, over a time frame of a decade. It's not meant to be a history of them. A very fun read.
He also wrote " Be True To Your School", which is a revisiting of his junior year in high school in 1964. He had to keep a journal back then for an English class, detailing day to day activities. As luck would have it, he kept it and it was the basis of the book. This was also a very good book, especially if you were a teenager at that time. I was.
I recommend both of these books.
