51  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: AGD missing, the future of this forum on: January 24, 2017, 07:24:49 PM

I'm not sure of your relevance here?  The instigators of this mess - who continue to stir it up in some bizarre, desperate attempt to validate their behavior, were asshats.  And posted in an idiotic matter, finding political context where none existed.  Mr. Desper was making an analogy based on crowd tone and crowd size at public events.  Period.

And EVEN if Desper had meant his post to be pro-Trump -- which he didn't -- you don't gang up on the Beach Boys' former sound engineer if you have the incredible opportunity to have him as a member on your Beach Boys discussion board. Here's a guy who WORKED with the BB when they made some of their most legendary records and you chase him off? He should have never been made to rewrite his original post. Very disrespectful.

Desper was dog-piled because he committed the cardinal sin of making a reference to Republican candidate Donald Trump without going out of his way to state how appalled he was at his candidacy. That was enough to trigger some people here.

As for AGD, if he wants to come back, I say let him back on a probatory basis. If he acts like a jerk again then re-ban him.

This has been a fun exercise, but the attempt to save face for Doe by suggesting this or any other forum is dying will not work. The truth got out, now he has to answer for it. Alongside others - There is a lot of answering to do.

But, if the attempt to do it were to be graded, it gets a solid F.

Reddit? That was so 2015...

Doe was not only a major contributor, but he was a BB scholar with incredible expertise. Sure he's an eccentric and can be very acerbic, but when you're dealing with somebody who contributes so much and is basically irreplaceable, you gotta give them more leeway, otherwise you're just hurting your own forum.

I'll probably get quite a lot of argument about this, but I'll say it anyway. I think that the belief that everybody over on PSF are evil is toxic, and I believe that PSF believing everybody on the SS board are evil is also toxic. Somewhere down the line this board split into two factions, with everybody against everybody else. I can't even muster up enough energy to be pissed off anymore. I'm just incredibly sad. SmileySmile used to be the number 1 Beach Boy's website on the internet. But not any longer. In the last day or so I've come to believe that everybody banned starting with Andrew Doe to today should be allowed to come back for 30 days. If those 30 days end without any "incidents", then another 30 should be added, and we would just play it by ear from there. Of course, more than two mods would be needed to help keep an eye on certain people.

BB fans are not getting any younger, and forums are out of favor with the new generation: they use sites like Reddit. So banning AGD  and splitting the user base in two is basically signing this forum's death warrant. It's going to be a challenge surviving, don't make it impossible by creating two rival forums.

I say unban everybody. Mods can delete posts and lock threads that get out of hand.

Read the comments after the article. Most of the posters leave very brutal comments about The Boys.

It's the Huffington Post, what do you expect?

Mike should do it, as the ultimate rock n' roll act of defiance.

I think it's funny everybody assumes BW and AJ voted for Hillary, when Trump got most of the older, white vote. Last time I checked Brian  and Al are old white men.

There's gonna be a lot of people watching, why not entertain them?
57  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Should the Beach Boys play the Trump inauguration? on: November 26, 2016, 09:23:17 PM
They should if they're asked (no reason to think they will be though) and want to. The true rock n' roll spirit is doing what you want even when all the pearl-clutchers tell you it would be very naughty to do so. Nothing lamer than supposed rockers like Springsteen who shill for establishment candidates.

So it's lame when Springsteen does it but the Beach Boys should do it???

Trump may be a lot of things, but he's not the establishment candidate. He's the punk rock candidate. If rock is supposed to be about walking on the wild side, then the Trump inauguration is the place to be for real rockers!

The idea for the lyrics of California Girls is great: an ode to teenage male attraction for beautiful girls! And even the more specific concept of listing all the different States, and how it would be great if they all could be California girls, is good.

But the actual lyrics feel like a first draft, like Mike Love came up with a first set of words, and then never refined them, never improved them. There isn't a single witty image or fun, clever idea. Not a single double entendre or anything risque like "two girls for every guy" from Surf City. It's a missed opportunity; a real, professional, talented lyricist could have done so much more with the idea.

For native Japanese or French speakers: how accurate is Mike's accent in Sumahama and Bells of Paris?

I'm assuming that he sung the lyrics phonetically.

His pronounciation of the French words in Belles of Paris is actually pretty good. Brian doesn't do as good a job in At My Window.

Would Kokomo have still been a hit if Mike hadn't made a small change in the lyrics?

He also added the "Aruba, Jamaica" part of the song. It's not the main hook but it's still a secondary hook.

He has his good days and his bad days. However, with Brian, money has always been a secondary consideration.

With Brian, yes.

I always felt it was too similar to Surfer Girl.

Get that identity politics, SJW nonsense off this board. Bad enough that it's polluted whole corners of the Internet...
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Regarding Here Comes The Night on: September 28, 2016, 08:43:12 PM
I love the HCTN remake! They could have taken the easy wait out and released a disco version of one of their hits, but instead they rescued an old album track from obscurity and turned it ito this epic disco masterpiece! And they were right to pick HCTN, the chorus works perfectly as a dance track. The harmonies on the track are mind-blowing.

In the same way that some songs on 15BO are not given a chance because they're covers, HCTN is rejected because it happens to be of the disco genre. There's bad disco and good disco. This is good disco.

It was produced by the great Curt Boettcher, what more could we want? I think you can even hear him in the high-pitched harmonies at the very end.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1970 Paris footage Everyone has to see this!! on: July 21, 2006, 09:30:44 PM
I don't know if any of you guys speak French, but I do. The host who introduces the footage at the beginning is very negative about what's about to follow : he says that the show proved that the BB hadn't evolved, aside from a few gadgets meant to "convince a minority that their music is actually relevant". He also says that there were a lot of empty seats, and that there is no need for the kids watching to make fun of the BB, since "your parents wouldn't understand anyway". He even says that "it shows how much pop music has evolved in the past 5 years that even an important band like the BB have been left behind".

Wow, it's not the kind of stuff you'd hear on MTV today. Brutally honest, even though the guy is way off.
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWPS: How much input did Brian have? on: July 20, 2006, 10:08:17 AM
Alright, I've been reading theses forums for years, and I have never registered until now, but I thought I'd add a few points that certainly help me see clearer in the whole thing :

1 - There are two huge forces at play that are bound to have an effect on all the information that is given or repeated regarding BWPS :

a) from a marketing and media-friendly point of view, "pop genius Brian Wilson overcomes his demons and finishes long-lost masterpiece" is sellable. It works. It's good. But "little-known indie-rocker Darian Sahanaja puts together old session tapes based on fan-established theories and asks Brian Wilson to lend his voice to them" doesn't work. So anything that comes from the record company, from Brian Wilson's entourage or from the people who want the record to be a success will be influenced by that.

b) most fans are emotional, and want to believe the first version above, and not the second, which is so much less satisfying.

2 - Ok, the thing about quotes. A quote is something that somebody once said to a certain person, in a certain context. It's not the absolute truth. Think of everything you said today, and think of how trustworthy it would be if somebody extracted from it one line and used it again in 10 years later in a different context. When it comes to Brian Wilson producing BWPS or not, instead of trying to find the truth based on quotes, let's analyse the released product. Is there anything on it that seems to imply than today's Brian Wilson, based on all we know about him, made any impact? If he really was in charge, why is everything mostly a note-for-note remake of the old tapes? Wouldn't a man in charge of his own work add of substract to it, change arrangements, make surprising additions? If the whole record sounds like a fan-made compilation of the old bootlegs, with lyrics added to fit the existing melodic lines, it probably is.

3 - We BB fans tend to think of all the people in the BB universe as either heroes or villains. Somehow Van Dyke Parks became a saint. Now, I'm sure he's an honest man who wouldn't participate in something that is clearly a rip-off or an awful piece of crap, but from there to assume that surely BW was in charge of BWPS, because VDP wouldn't have taken part in it otherwise, is to project our own purist-fanboy unrealistic ideals on people who maybe just thought : "hey, this is good music, it'll end up a fun album, and it makes sense financially, so let's do it".
