JANUARY 11th
1964: A recording session for The Castells’ version of ‘I Do’ at Gold Star studios, Los Angeles, California.
1965: The Beach Boys start and finish their recording of ‘Do You Wanna Dance’ at Gold Star studios, Los Angeles, California. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eczP8C0P5R4
1968: Brian Wilson interviewed at home. This interview would later appear on the Rock and Other Four Letter Words album. I’d really like to hear this interview.
1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Mid South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee. Brian isn’t there.
1978: A recording session at Brother Studios, Santa Monica, California. They work on one of Brian’s favorite songs, ‘Shortenin Bread’.
1980: After several days of working on their vocals for their upcoming Keepin’ The Summer Alive album at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California, they do it again today.
1991: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Convention Center, San Diego, California at the inaugural of Governor Pete Wilson.
2002: The Beach Boys play a gig at Ben Crenshaw’s house in Austin, Texas. Unless there’s also a place called Ben Crenshaw, and considering they didn’t play inside the body of Ben Crenshaw, I’m figuring it was probably his house.
2008: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Desert Diamond Casino, Sahuarita, Arizona.
2014: The Beach Boys play a gig at the decadent Dairy Queen International Convention, Fort DeRussy Beach Park, Honolulu, Hawaii.

1966: The Beach Boys play a gig at Kaikan Hall, Kyoto, Japan.
1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Von Braun Center, Huntsville, Alabama without Brian.
1980: In a remarkable change of events from the past few days, the Beach Boys work on their vocals for their upcoming Keepin’ The Summer Alive album at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California.

These are some that aren't objectively the saddest (that'd be impossible anyway, though 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' kinda takes the cake) but these are the songs that even just thinking about them hurt:
'We'll Meet Again' - Vera Lynn (the second greatest song ever written) 'Gloomy Sunday' - Billie Holiday 'You Need Feet' - Bernard Bresslaw 'Runaway' - Del Shannon 'Hello Stranger' - Barbara Lewis 'Hey Girl' - Freddie Scott (it's the backing vocals) 'Tell Her No'/'Nothings Changed' - The Zombies 'Ooo Baby Baby' - The Miracles 'Caroline, No' - You know 'Femme Fatale' - The Velvet Underground 'Chelsea Girls' - Nico 'Jugband Blues' - Pink Floyd 'Plastic Palace People' - Scott Walker 'Everybody's Talkin' - Harry Nilsson 'Maybe Tomorow' - The Iveys 'Madame George' - Van Morrison 'Look At Your Game Girl' - Charles Manson 'Way To Blue' - Nick Drake 'Penina' - Carlos Mendes (I have no idea why) 'Dark Globe'/'Opel' - Syd Barrett 'A Day In The Life of a Tree'/'Til I Die' - You know 'The Kiss' - Judee Sill 'I'll Slip Away' - Rodriguez (1973 version) 'Black Eyed Dog' - Nick Drake 'Nightime' - Big Star 'Marlene' - Jackson C. Frank 'Ten Years Gone' - Led Zeppelin 'Europa' - Santana 'You And Your Sister' - Chris Bell 'Stardust' - Willie Nelson 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' - George Jones 'Decades' - Joy Division 'Now And Then'/'Grow Old With Me' - John Lennon 'All Those Years Ago' - George Harrison 'Here Today' - Paul McCartney 'Just Another Sucker On The Vine' - Tom Waits 'Back To The Old House (electric version)' - The Smiths (their reputation as a miserable band was given to them by people who don't get them but they do have profoundly melancholy songs and this is the one I'm choosing for this) 'Sixteen Blue' - The Replacements (the single most underrated band of all time (sorry Beach Boys)) (the guitar solo at the end is the most powerful fckin thing ever) 'Our Last Night Together' - Arthur Russell 'Something In The Way' - Nirvana 'Nightswimming' - R.E.M. 'Monster Inside of Me' - Daniel Johnston 'Dumb' - Nirvana 'Katy Song'/'Grace Cathedral Park' - Red House Painters 'Something Changed' - Pulp (the "when we woke up that morning" bit onwards is one of the most painfully bittersweet things I've ever heard even though it's a happy song) 'A Design For Life' - Manic Street Preachers (their album The Holy Bible is the most depressing album ever made, though this isn't from that album) 'Let Down' - Radiohead 'Kiss Me' - Sixpence None the Richer (I admit it) 'Chicken Wire' - The Pernice Brothers (I read this was voted the saddest song somewhere and it's pretty damn sad) 'I Didn't Understand' (Dutch TV version)/'Everything Means Nothing To Me' - Elliott Smith 'Lost Cause' - Beck 'Bird Gerhl' - Antony & The Johnsons 'This Is My House, This Is My Home (alternate version)' - We Were Promised Jetpacks (and the non alternate version for some reason) 'The Nights Are Cold' - Camera Obscura 'Summers Gone' - You know 'Hello Stranger' - Julia Holter
As for the most lifelessly depressing songs that make me wanna die: 'Torn Between Two Lovers' - Mary MacGregor 'Dust In The Wind' - Kansas 'Linger' - The Cranberries 'All For You' - Sister Hazel 'Angel' - Sarah Mclachlan 'Mad World' - Gary Jules 'I Hope You Dance' - whoever does that song Anything by Dave Matthews Most of whats on the radio

Don't underestimate the simple but timeless quality and profound musical intelligence behind that tune.
I didn't mean to underestimate it, and it is a timeless song, but I feel what Brian was doing around that time was much more complex, for lack of a better word. I get why he'd be amazed at it, but just in comparison to what he was capable of I thought it was funny.

What about drip drop? If you cover your ears and pretend you're listening to 'Cool Cool Water' it's almost just as beautiful. Maybe he was trying to do a punk sort of thing to get the group popular again. That's why he consciously added all those "Let's go motherf&ckas!".

Wow I forgot about that. But there is a difference sort of in that this is a list of a lot of your favorites. Like today I could put the "You've been thinkin bout some things...." bit from 'From There to Back Again' in that thread but I wouldn't say it's one of my absolute favorites. It's not much of a difference I know but all the bits I listed here sort of loom large in my psyche and it's a little more than kicking my ass. I mean I'll probably be thinking about that end bit of 'Surf's Up' when I die. So this thread isn't about the moments that are kicking our ass right now, it's about the moments that will kick ass forever.

1964: Two recording sessions today: one at Western Recorders and the other at Gold Star. At the Western session, ‘In The Parkin’ Lot’, ‘This Car Of Mine’, ‘Denny’s Drums’, and ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ are worked on. ‘Don’t Worry Baby’ is nearly finished (all that’s left are a few overdubs). At Gold Star work is done on ‘Why Do Fools Fall In Love’.
1965: A recording session for the ‘Please Let Me Wonder’ instrumental at Western Recorders, Los Angeles, California. This is Brian’s first recording session since his breakdown December 23rd and it could be symbolically the beginning of (what’s considered by a lot of people) Brian’s musical golden period, which will last a little over two years.
1966: The first gig for The Beach Boys’ first Japanese tour at the Shibuya Koukaido, Tokyo, Japan.
1970: A recording session at Brian’s home studio in Bel Air, California, where they work on ‘Susie Cincinnati’, ‘Good Time’, and a cover of The Beatles’ ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’.
1977: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Civic Center, Lakeland, Florida.
1980: A recording session at Al Jardine’s Red Barn Studio, Big Sur area, California. Vocals for the next album (Keepin’ The Summer Alive) are worked on.
1989: The Beach Boys play a gig after the Hula Bowl at Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, Hawaii.
1999: The Beach Boys play a gig at the Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford, Connecticut.
2011: A recording session for Brian Wilson’s In the Key of Disney album at Oceanway recording studio, Los Angeles, California.
2015: The Beach Boys play a show at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, Florida.

The part in Let Him Run Wild that goes "Guess you know I waited for you girl" is sublime.
It amazes me how Brian hates his vocal on that song. I think it's one of his greatest. His vocal is so pretty (which is why he dislikes it: "I sounded like a fairy."). The way he sings "forget" ('All the dreams you shared with him you might as well forget') and then the background harmonies that sort of stumble in immediately afterwards; I can't even think of words to describe that bit, but I felt like pointing it out. It might be the most underrated Beach Boys song (probably not but it's definitely one of them).
