I'll probably get that at christmas time. I think they've stopped making those, right?
252  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Surf's Up on: February 20, 2014, 10:36:01 PM
Surf's Up is one of those albums that has 3 or 4 amazing songs but also 2 or 3 "not that good" songs.

Amazing: Surf's Up, Til' I Die, Long Promised Road, Feel Flows
Bad: Student Demonstration Time, Take A Load Off Your Feet (very out of place).
The rest in-between.

I will admit I don't listen to this album a lot. It does have some amazing songs but It doesn't really work as an album. Dennis's songs (Sound Of Free, Fallin' In Love, 4th Of July, WIBNTLA) should have been included to make this album stronger.

4/5

In Sunflower you can feel all the heart and soul they put into this record to make it as good as they could. They're all great songs. My favourite would have to be the opener "Slip On Through".

5/5 easily.

Welcome Chris,

I'd keep going hard on the twofers (you can still get 'em at JB for around $15 a pop).

Then I'd seek out the Unsurpased Masters series, in whatever format you can find - good hunting - A

Yeah, the two-fers are great. Damn good price. I deciding whether to get the "Friends/ 20/20" two-fer or the "In Concert" cd.

Just sounds like live vocals over the instrumental track.

Carl and the Passions is an album with lots (well not lots, its only 8 tracks!) of great songs which I like very much.

You Need A Mess of Help to Stand Alone: A great rocker which i love jamming to. It would be quite awesome to hear a live recording of this song.
Here She Comes: Every song Ricky and Blondie wrote for the band was great and no better example of that then this. The bass is amazing. One of my favorites on this album.
He Came Down: Mike Love's attempt at gospel kinda feels like a demo (especially in the latter half of the song). The vocals are pretty cool though.
Marcella: Brian's rocker. The song is great but the vocals should've been mixed better. Needs a louder rocking rhythm guitar as well. Lyrics are great though.
Hold On Dear Brother: I will admit I really like this song. Probably because my dad's record/cd collection mostly included country music and so I can appreciate this song more than other Beach Boys fans. Great songs.
Make It Good: The only song I really don't like on this album. Sorry Dennis, this song doesn't really go anywhere and is really poorly mixed. It should've been developed more (or less maybe).
All This Is That: Simply- Beautiful. The vocals are great. The instrumentation is great. This song is great.
Cuddle Up: Now this is how you do a slow song with an orchestra (not Make It Good!). Utter perfection. The melody and chords are beautiful.

I give this album a 4 out of 5. Needs more songs but what's here is great.
257  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Holland on: February 20, 2014, 09:15:28 PM
Holland is probably one of my favorite Beach Boys Albums. Sail On Sailor is one of the best songs they made in 1970s shame it wasn't a hit. Steamboat actually makes me feel like I'm on a steamboat, a great Dennis song. The California Saga is probably my favourite part of the album. Big Sur is beautiful and features Mike's best singing and lyrics. The Beaks of Eagles may not be everyone's cup of tea but I love it. I like how the minor key poem readings contrast with the major key choruses. And California is just a fun, country-like beach boys song which anyone can enjoy. I also love the flutes that connect each song. The Trader is probably Carl's best song and another highlight. Leaving This Town didn't catch on me at first but now I think it's great (That keyboard solo is awesome). Only with you is probably the only song where i think they could have done better after hearing the live version (I don't really like the you-oo bits). Funky Pretty  lives up to it's name (it does sounds like Mt. Vernon).

5/5. Great, enjoyable album. I don't think the Mt. Vernon should count as part of my score, It really isn't part of the album.

At My Window

It's a nice song but compared to the rest of the album it's a bit weak.

Disney Girls (1957)

This is probably Bruce's best song but I just love the feel of Lookin' At Tomorrow.

Make It Good.
Cuddle Up was by far the better of Dennis's orchestra songs. Make It Good just sounds like the idea for a song that isn't really executed well. Too messy.

Shame Hold on Dear Brother and Here She Comes got voted out so quickly, I love those songs.
