Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1983 SMiLE bootleg. Anywhere online to hear it??

It's quite awful, to be honest.
At least on my copy, the volume fluctuates from WAY too loud to almost inaudible; one song (labeled "Holidays") is a phony, a Miles Davis track intentionally miscredited as a Beach Boys outtake; "Smiley Smile" songs are used in place of "Smile" versions not circulating yet; and again, at least on mine, "Surf's Up" is distorted to the point of being painfully unlistenable.
I understand the historical value it had, but it's EASILY the *worst* Smile bootleg in existence.
I am just curious to how it all sounded together I guess for listening I should stick to Sea of Tunes and Vigotone.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sea Of Tunes Smile vs Smile Sessions Smile

If you have the SOT Smile as a music file, burn it to a CD and find the SOT 16 artwork on line and make your own CD. Buying a gray area boot of a boot when you already have the music makes no sense to me.
Good point! I took your advice and burned CD's of Sea of Tunes and disc one of Vigotone SMiLE. Home copies of bootlegs I guess that is common enough in practice. I have always liked Smile Sessions disc 1 but S.O.T certainly does have a different feel and I like the feel of it. Vigotone ain't bad either other than I would prefer it to start with Prayer instead of Part 2 Heroes and Villains.

Ok it is now 5 years since Smile Sessions was released so how do you feel now when comparing Disc 1 to the S.O.T. SMiLE? I have the European 1 CD Smile Sessions and as detailed in another thread there is a dodgy repackaging of S.O.T. for sale on Amazon under a different title. Would it be worth my money or is it best to just stick with the official product? I have to admit I love the Capitol version I have and I already have S.O.T as a music file. Would the CD be all that much better with it being a boot? I am assuming it doesn't touch the official CD in sound quality.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / 1983 SMiLE bootleg. Anywhere online to hear it??

From my understanding the 1983 "Brother Records" bootleg LP was the first SMiLE boot to make it to the public but unfortunately I have never heard it. I would like to hear what the material available at the time sounded like and what the bootleggers chose to put on the album. Is there anywhere it can be heard online or somewhere to find an MP3 of it?? The earliest SMiLE boot I have heard is the Vigotone from the early nineties and I would like to check out the very first. thanks

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys: With Me Tonight. Legendary Radio Broadcasts 1968-1970.

With Me Tonight Legendary Radio Broadcasts turns out to apparently be a totalling misleading name for this release and it is a repackaging of Unsurpassed Masters 16 SMiLE. I am thinking of ordering it because it is cheaper than a proper Unsurpassed Masters.....the ugly cover is the only thing holding me back.
After receiving my copy a few months ago I contacted Amazon and requested a return, since there are no radio broadcasts from 1968-70 as the CD title states. Amazon immediately refunded my money and said there was no need to return the CD. I may buy it anyway just because I don't have a CD of S.O.T. SMiLE. Hate the album cover though.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / European 1 CD version of Smile Sessions
|
on: August 15, 2016, 05:10:45 PM

I ordered a European (German) copy of Smile Sessions online and rather than the 2 disc set which I believe was the smallest offering in the U.S. it is a 1 CD collection. Anyone have any knowledge of how the sound is on the Euro CD's?? I chose The Smile Sessions because I can't seem to find a CDR of Mok's SMiLE or S.O.T . I would love to have both of these but they must be pretty rare and pretty expensive.

Holy crap, has it really been 3 years since I put this out? Maaan, time flies.
Re: Good Vibrations. The best stereo version of the song is on the official stereo Smiley Smile CD. I wouldn't be improving anything by attempting my own stereo version. And that's it. It's not that I don't like the song or think it shouldn't be on SMiLE.
And... thanks for all the kind words, glad people are still finding this!
thanks for the mix, man! Love it! I also have your Mini Mix 2. Is there a Mini Mix 1 somewhere online??

Another bump for this one! I just now got around to listening to this mix and WOW!! This has to be one of the top 3 versions of SMiLE in history! Just the right amount of everything and no Good Vibrations! So you think this is the "Top 3 best Smile fan mix without Good Vibrations?" Naaaahhhhh. And remember, the '83 Smile boot had Good Vibrations on it, as it should have been. It was on the 83 boot but wasn't mentioned on the sleeve. That is why I thought that sleeve suits this mix. I'm not crazy about GV at all as far as being a piece of SMiLE. Good tune but it doesn't suit the mood of the album.

Just the right amount of everything and no Good Vibrations! Absolutely love it! I couldn't find an album cover anywhere online for it so I tagged it to the 1983 Brother Records bootleg album cover. I thought it suited because that is an awesome variation of the smile shop cover with no GV mentioned on it anywhere. FINE work

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / FINALLY decided to do my own patchword SMiLE

I know that fans putting together their own versions of SMiLE has been a proud traditiion for decades and I have finally gotten around to putting together my own. My two favorite versions are MOK's version and SNL's 1967 mix but neither of them were "perfect" to my ears so I took pieces from each and formed what to me personally is the most fulfilling SMiLE out there. It is as follows Our Prayer (MOK) Heroes and Villains (SNL) VegeTables (SNL) Do You Like Worms? (SNL) Child Is The Father (SNL) The Old Master Painter (SNL) CabinEssence (MOK) Good Vibrations (SNL) Wonderful (SNL) Im In Great Shape (SNL) He Gives Speeches (MOK) The Elements (SNL) Wind Chimes (SNL) You're Welcome (MOK) Surf's Up (MOK)

I never knew George Harrison but I am friends with Tony Bramwell who worked for the Beatles and was George's friend since childhood. I will ask him if George and ML were pals. Either way I have no problem with the song and I'm glad Mike wrote it.
Ok, Quote Tony Bramwell to me on the question of their friendship "Yes, They were friends!"

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Is A New Beach Boys Album On The Way?

Mike and Brian can't agree on a touring Beach Boys that much has been clear for decades. How about they go back to the OLD way where Brian creates and BB Album he likes and Mike, Bruce, Al, David and perhaps Blondie come in and record on it and Mike and Bruce go out on the road perhaps taking the other three with them at times? That would please everyone with any sense.

I don't really get the stink over the C50 "breakup" to be honest. The tour ended and Mike/Bruce went back to their band and Brian, Al, David went on their thing. Who expected it to be permanent?? It was just a fifty year celebration but the press got Mike's statement and blew it out of proportion and someone got Brian all stirred up like a hornet in a golf bag and BAM! Big Stink. At least that is how I see it. I ALWAYS expected when the tour ended it would go back to how it was before.

Mike and Bruce touring as The Beach Boys is fine and dandy but I feel that Al and David Marks should be allowed to have "Original Beach Boy" or "of The Beach Boys" on their promotional material also. It isn't saying they ARE the Beach Boys and Know David isn't a member of BRI but it is just a true statement which would help people recognize them. Brian Wilson in my opinion doesn't even need the tag but it would be ok if he chose to use it. Also apologies for asking questions which have been hashed over and over here. I am new to the board so forgive me if I have made any boring posts.
