101  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: The Beach Boys Love You on: July 05, 2006, 07:57:14 PM
Hahahahahahahaha, I'll take that as a compliment, weirder than Brian Wilson. Never really thought my music was weird, though, any tracks in particular?

"Let The Bullgine Run" is actually a pretty good song. Obviously it would be better if it were properly recorded and performed by the Doors.

Don't shave the beard!

I heard the producer tricked Kurt into recording all the guitar overdubs (there's got to be like six or seven in there) for Drain You and then added them without his knowledge.
And don't get me started on the unplugged album!!

From the very first second of audience cheer I get hairs rising on the back of my neck. Seeing the video of it is even better. Stage set up with flowers and candles everywhere, etc. The covers they chose were excellent. Chris playing the acoordian, then guitar on the Meat Puppet songs -- all great stuff. How generous of Nirvana to showcase three other artist's songs on their own performance! We have a David Bowie cover, a Vaselines cover, and three Meat Puppet covers. Bowie said of the cover that Kurt might as well have just wrote the song himself. The performance of that song on the In Utero tours was even better than on unplugged. As soon as the chorus kicked in, the guitars were distorted raging up the scales.

Nobody covers the Beach Boys because the vocals are so hard to do properly. Anyone can cover a Beatles song but hardly anyone can cover "Our Prayer."

I've given up. Gave up months ago.  :D

Other things have shown themselves which have taken on a bit more importance to me personally. Music is a fantastic career for the right people though. I think there is a point however where the dream does die, and those who aren't fit for it fall in the back like I did. Take that as hope though, because there are many people naturally inclined to music and creativity.

I'm not sure if Kurt was credited for the right things though. He complained himself that other rock musicians are being celebrated for their lyrics whereas people could never see past Nirvana as the band that did "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Kurt's lyrics are often very poetic and have a unique flow to them. He was a pop songwriter through and through, difference being with him that every song had a distinctive edge to it which was Kurt's own. Consider the song "Drain You" and the music and words to that one!

One baby to another says -
I'm lucky to have met you
I don't care what you think
Unless it is about me
And it is now my duty to completely drain you
I travel through a tube
To end up in your affection

Chew your meat up for you
Pass it back and forth
In a passionate kiss
From my mouth to yours
I like you

With eyes so dialated,
I've become your pupil
You've taught me everything
Without a poison apple
The water is so yellow, I'm a healthy student
Indebted and so grateful -
Vacuum out the fluids

.................................

Well I've certainly never heard anything like it before.  Smiley

Well that's what separates the real artists from the followers. Anyone can play guitar but not everyone can write a great song.

Dennis Wilson said that Brian was his biggest influence. But Dennis' songs sound nothing like his brother's in any way at all. He took inspiration and used it well rather than just following and copying.

I have the night and I were so young and I just can't get into it. Something about his voice ruins it for me

I can't get into it either. For me its the production. It sounds like they're trying to hard to live up to their influences without being anywhere near to them.

Such a spiritual album.

Brian needs a beard in present day 2006.

But is it ageism to state a truth that one has learned by getting older?  The young won't believe us, but that doesn't make what we say - the truths we have to tell - any less true.

I remember that stage...nobody around me knew anything...and neither did i.  I was glad when *i*, at least, left it behind...
;-)

I'm not retarded you know. I'm 18 years old and while I know little of the world, it's not like my opinion is invalid because I'm not of an age to truly respect, realize, and respond to wisdom correctly. My head is in the clouds a little because I've been pushed into a few different styles of living and none of them have of yet made much sense. Do you attack Brian Wilson's opinions of him asking, "What's it all about?" when he sings it? By my reasoning, it's at least a decent idea to start off searching for answers and insight now before I grow too old and cynical to think properly.

If you ask me, those little bastards shouldn't quit their day jobs.

Imagine being one of those kids and going to school the next day?

I wonder if Kurt Cobain was swishing around in his jar of ashes when he saw that cover.
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis Wilson / Radiohead on: July 02, 2006, 08:03:32 PM
The song "Dreamer" on Pacific Ocean Blue in its instrumental break sounds very much like what Radiohead did years later with "The National Anthem" on their Kid A album. The wild horn section just drifting around wildly and without restraint. Now there's probably been tons of similar free style playing within structured songs; but my ignorance of such things leads me to think it to be a nice coincidence or direct inspiration.

Any thoughts?

"Rainbows" also reminds me of something R.E.M would do.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I'm giving a young BB fan a copy of Pet Sounds today. on: July 02, 2006, 11:24:29 AM
It's not ridiculous.

Sgt. Pepper
is not the Beatles' best work in my opinion. It's just their most celebrated. Half of it is pretty crappy compared to the great things they did before and after that album. Compare "Sexy Sadie" to 'When I'm 64" there's just no comparison. Likewise with the Beach Boys, they have many interesting albums. I personally prefer many of them over Pet Sounds, although I do understand the emotional importance that it carries. I think Friends would make a larger impression on a person. It's unlike most music, and will take most off-guard. Pet Sounds is like handing a person a massive stack of papers to look through, when the paper they need is at the very bottom. Whereas Friends is just one sheet of finely sliced paper with its message written clearly.

This was a performance Rerun and I did a while back. He's on guitar and I'm playing drums. The girl singing is our friend Jane.

Watch it and delight in the glorious sounds that we made.

I'm not sure if Pet Sounds is going to fully reveal itself to a 13 year old. It'll probably just be sweet sounds to the ear, though it's better than most what 13 year old kids listen to now.

Great band.

My favorite album is Up On The Sun.

Yours?

It seems Mike didn't take Pet Sounds seriously either.

Eh, you're probably right actually. Doesn't mean I do it on purpose though, it's completely out of my reach.
124  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: sugarandspice on: July 01, 2006, 10:15:51 AM

Do you ever actually plan on doing any of these things you mention?  You create a thread about maybe joining the army and then in a later thread become almost insulting about the notion.  You make post after post of high school-level "insightful commentary" about where you are in life and your role in the world, but, to me anyway, it comes off as more of you wanting to sound like somebody searching than somebody who really is.  I believe you may be in that depressed teenager phase where you realize the people around you are all shallow nobodies and you feel the need to prove your depth by appearing introspective.

How's that for "ageism?"

Well, I think you're wrong on that assumption.

I think it's a very touching song. Especially with Carl Wilson crooning the words out.
