Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2019 Tour Thread

Couldn't really agree more with what was said above. Tonight in Royal Oak was a really enjoyable night for me. I was a little nervous because it was my mom's first time seeing Brian and I wasn't quite sure how well my parents would understand as they go to 20+ classic rock shows a year and know a good show from the lackluster. They both really seemed to enjoy it while admittedly not "getting" Friends and Smile era tracks. They love the early songs though and my mom's fav is "Don't worry Baby" which I knew Matt wouldn't disapoint. My Dad's fav is "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Shut Down" which they seem to play at every show I go to without him but never makes the set list when he is there lol
I wasn't planning on going to see him again but after it was announced that it would focus on tracks from Friends and Surf's Up, I just couldn't resist. Brian sang more this time around than the first Pet Sounds show I went to at the Fox a couple years back, I really felt he did well. "Busy Doing Nothing" and Diamond Head" were the highlights despite Brian's flub on the former, but it's not an easy song, the lyrics are simple yet intricate.
Being in the third row is definitely the closest I've been seeing him and that was really enjoyable, I was worried our tickets wouldn't transfer well with the venue change. Other than that, I'm very happy my wife was finally able to hear H&V live as it didn't make the set list the 2 other times she has attended.
Only disagreement I have with the above post is that I love "Feel Flows" and "Long Promised Road". I had seen Blondie sing FF in the past and just hoped and hoped he'd do LPR as well this time. Also hearing "Til I Die" live is great, now I'm realizing I could go on and on. I hate to say it's my last show, but it is a high note to go out on, I genuinely hope it could be the end of touring for him, I couldn't help but tear up with his arms outstretched on "Til I Die" and the noticeable shaking, I want him to be well and wish him all the best.

if brian and his band's performing this show today will he forget?
to mention today is the 51st anniversary date of the original LP's release
They didn't mention it! A little suprising haha The show was phenomenal. I've seen Brian 4 times over the past 3-4 years and this was the best. I was worried because the show last fall was the worst. Darian wasn't there last time, and I was worried when I found he was with the Zombies... So glad he rejoined the 12th, no Darling performed, but I like his voice in the stack and energy he brings. He and Gary Griffin were just having a blast. Brian sang more this show than any show prior, and I mean sang. Some of his vocals are what one has come to expect, but throughout the set, ESPECIALLY the Pet Sounds tracks, he really dug in. There was some grit to his voice, an audible return to 15BO/Love You voicing, nearly beyond my belief. My wife pointed out the same, enough verification for me. I still smile just thinking about it. So glad I saw him for a second show this tour, and on May 16th to boot. It's hard telling what contributes to a varingly engaged BW, but there was no suggestion of tiring or becoming disengaged with the material. Only difference between this show and Detroit last year was "Feel Flows" which was such and treat too Ellington hear live, you can certainly tell Blondie's respect for Carl in the performance.

Thanks, I spend a lot of time on those sites haha. Unfortunately neither touch on the differene, such as pressing numbers etc. Just that both versions exist. They don't even mention of 70's promo presses with stereo b/w mono are dedicated mono mixes or fold downs. I guess I'll just have to buy up what I can over time and see for myself Hey! The It's OK b/w Had to Phone Ya is a great 45! The way the Sax's cut through! That's one I actually just picked up too. And the Hot mix on RnR music makes it totally worth owning! Haha Funny enough, I have a couple RnR Music 45's. My favorite is mine with a Text less TM b-side. Brother Label but no words. Can't find any info on it either. Definitely gonna have to go back for some of the promos/imports he still has. I'm also curious of there are any differences in the '70 Susie Cincinnati vs '76

Recently happened on a trove of BB 45's. As I sifted through I noticed some duplicates that were brother label and steamboat. For example "Long Promised Road" b/w " 'Til I Die" was released with both labels. There were 3 or 4 other identical releases with both labels. Any insight on this? At first I thought maybe reissues, but I'm more inclined to simultaneous release. Is 1 label variant rarer than the other?

Very interesting, hadn't quite noticed Billy was filling in for him, and I would love to see Billy on stage, but I agree with the above that Darian really ties these shows together atleast the 2 shows I've been to.
I agree fully with HeyJude's last post. Having both of them would be awesome, nothing against GG though!

I wouldn't want another multi disk Smile set, just Disk 1 reissued in stereo with minor changes here and there. There's a discussion going on about this on the Linett thread. Do You Like Worms?, Fire, Surf's Up etc. in full stereo is preferable to Carry Me Home in my view. Also, anything I've heard from the Disk 2-5 material doesn't sound 'murky' or 'muddy'.
Just so you know, there was a stereo mix of Surf's Up on the final side of the Smile vinyl release. It sounds great. Here's the stereo Smile mixes I know of from the box set, the vinyl or from Made in California. Heroes and Villains (Stereo Mix) Our Prayer (2012 The Smile Sessions Stereo Mix) Surf's Up (stereo mix) Vega-Tables (Stereo Mix) You're Welcome (Stereo mix) Wind Chimes (Stereo Mix) The ones on the vinyl are not accessible to me, I'm afraid. I bet they sound glorious. Also, may I just stress to the others here that Mark Linett and Alan Boyd's reproduction and mixing talents will not last forever. We must not be distracted by 70s and 80s obscurities, which will always remain, but concentrate on stereo Smile. Whatever the views of some here, an objective view should be taken. Just because you think mono is outdated doesn't mean a stereo SMILE would be better. If mono was outdated and undesirable why would the entire Beatles catalog be (re)released in Mono so recently? A small lost of albums FAR better in mono than stereo: VDP- Song Cycle Randy Newman- S/T Simon and Garfunkel- Bookends The Beatles- Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Hendrix- Axis: Bold as Love Nilsson- PSS and Aerial Ballet Every BB album up to Friends If you have not compared versions of the above albums, I strongly urge you to do so, unless you prefer studio gimmicks, I believe you will find the mono mixes far more engaging. It's not about what's out of date or en vogue, but what sounds best. I think we can all agree on that. "I look at sound like a painting, you find a balance, you have a balance and the balance is conceived in your mind. You finish the sound, you dub it down and you've stamped out a picture of your balance with that mono dubdown. But in stereo, you leave the dubdown to the listener- to his speaker placement and speaker balance. It just doesn't seem complete to me." -Brian Wilson Add me to the list of obscure 70's and 80's material. Atleast if they want my money. I want so badly to give my money to the BB's, but I can't justify buying the same titles over and over. That quote is in relation to old stereo. Also, he's DEAF in his right ear. Those albums you mentioned sound poor in stereo because they're in fake stereo. All the vocals panned to the left, and the backing track to the right, which sounds appalling. 'It's just like having one eye, you don't get the depth. I try to imagine hearing stereo, but there's no way to know... you don't get to hear the depth and the beauty.' - Brian Wilson Brian is exactly right with that analogy. All of that layered complexity blasted at you from one source just doesn't do justice to Smile. Most of the albums I listed aren't fake stereo 8 ) Gouge one of my eyes out if it will make things look as good as a proper mono mix sounds.

I hate to give a boring answer, but I believe it's a simple as Brice gave a 3rd vote to the Mike/Al vote that was going on at the time and Jack thought of the band as the Brothers Wilson followed by Mike/Al. nothing gets done in Stale mates and who else could be given the boot?
It's pretty evident Bruce was one for very soft/smooth pop and it was believed the Boys should go a more rock style as Carl and Dennis took.

What I see, looking back and trying to read between the lines, is what I saw the first time: a much older man and younger woman, he in a famous touring band: socially, there's an imbalance that he should have been cautious not to exploit (obviously he wasn't). She was impaired enough that she wasn't fully ambulatory and that she didn't remember anything. He was unimpaired enough that he remembered things and that he got her to his room and out again. He raped her on camera in the hall. Later, he left her passed out in the hall. Unless the article is actually incorrect, those are the facts. What's the mitigation here?
Your earlier post actually suggested that he may have done this previously because he did it this time. On that basis Trump has run for president before and Kennedy was killed more than once. That's absolutely not analogous and quite absurd. As for the rest - prosecuting the victim - wth? really? Trump has run for president before.

Carl specifically chose to not use a photo including Bruce on the Ten Years gatefold, when the studio offered to edit him in. Carl said that Bruce could have a small "Mug shot" but Bruce declined.
For most of the early 70's Bruce was responsible for many tie/null votes when things had become M, B, A vs The Brothers Wilson. I believe that was a big part as to why Jack Riley gave him the boot.

As for the Warner years LP's, I really prefer my White Label Promo Artisan pressings. Both Sunflower and Surf's up sounded quite a bit better than the standard Retail issues. Those are the only promo copies I have, but I also have an Artisan pressed Carl and the Passions/Pet Sounds that sounds incredible. Really I think Artisan pressed 70's BB's are the way to go.
Check out the link I popped in at post 8 above (if you've not already) - you've done really well, as per Stephen Desper's detailed info! Thanks for that link, I have seen Mr. Desper touch on some of that over at the Hoffman forums, but I hadn't known the Artisan pressings specifically had his and Carl's touch specifically. Great read!

I really hope to find the Brian in Fire hat cover boot one of these days. I really love these songs.
What's your price range? Have to be LP, or is CD OK? Go the CD, the vinyl sounds pretty poor Well I have the CD (sort of....ya know...) but I really want the LP. I can get over poor SQ, it's more of the nutty completest type of fun torture I put myself through. Flipping through the 'ol 12x12's brings a lot of glee. For me, it's kinda like you haven't really heard it until you've heard it on vinyl! Good hunting. I'd written off easily/inexpensively getting a copy of this baby (I mean, if you have the clams to drop, it ain't hard), and then it turned up at a record fair. 100% agree
