I actually really like this, I think its the silliest thing ever. But it also has a lot of real talent in it. Its ridiculously clever.

80  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1970's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Sunflower on: December 02, 2007, 01:58:10 PM
I agree with Ascrodin. Sunflower is an absolute creative peak for all of the beach boys. Dennis Wilson opens the album and sets pace for the whole album. Dennis' songs are amazing and sensitive and he was always getting better.

But by this point Brian Wilson was making far fewer songs, but everything he did was as genius as his Pet Sounds days. This Whole World is incredible. The breakdown "when girls get mad at boys" is beautiful enough to bring you to tears.

And the sort of corny Add Some Music To Your Day is outstanding, especially if you let the song get past the first and second verses, when the amazing backing vocals come in. The Beach Boys were singing and blending together better than ever.

Things only get better from here with Dennis' 50s rocker, Got To Know The Woman. And it quickly segues into my favorite song of the album, Bruce's beautiful ballad Deirdre. Whether you know it or not, Bruce Johnston is an outstanding singer, songwriter and pianist. Deirdre is an amazing high point of this album, and my second daughter will be named Deirdre (right after Caroline   Wink).

And the album never lets up, the next few songs bring you offerings from Dennis and Bruce and Brian, and even Carl and Al helped write some of the songs. I really love the songs All I Wanna Do and the sensitive Brian, Carl and Al piece, Our Sweet Love. These songs are very moving.

Obvious highlights are Dennis' Forever, and Bruce's Tears In The Morning, with their strong song writing and beautiful instrumentations. This album was definitely a little ballad heavy, but the result is an extremely sensitive and moving album.

I guess the weirdest part of the whole album is the ending with the story book like At My Window and Cool, Cool Water. But these 2 songs are still just as amazing as everything else.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, dismissing this album as anything less than outstanding, and one of their best albums is evidence of someone with no ears, or highly dysfunctional ones. This album has all the instrumentation of Smile, the sensitivity of Pet Sounds, the relaxing vibes of Friends, and one of the last true Beach Boys albums we have.

The album f

I wrote about it as well and posted on it.

It's such an outstanding album.

I know someone who works for Pitchfork. They were all playing this song in their office and laughing their heads off. Apparently the idea to actually write about it on the site got pulled by the editor though.

What a terrible mistake that song was (and still is).

I received something similar to this, but it was 12 discs.

It had all the sessions from the Smile era. Very similar to the SOTs and Project Smile, but had some pictures and stuff.

His solo album wasn't released until after his death? I'm pretty sure it was released in 1977, six years before he died.

Oops.

Dennis Wilson was unhappy with the direction the Beach Boys were going in the early 70s. From his perspective, he was upset that The Beach Boys were releasing albums like Holland, that everyone knew would be unsuccessful, and his songs like Carry Me Home were being rejected that he felt could give them a come back.

Yet from the other Beach Boys' perspectives, Dennis Wilson was a cold, callous jerk who was not supporting them and often was performing quite badly...

It's only natural that touring arrangements would get strained.

But regarding Dennis' solo album. It was pretty good. Songs like Thoughts of You really did have hit potential, but he wasn't being taken seriously by his record label as a solo artist, and he was still considered an active member of the Beach Boys. But why didn't he just quit the Beach Boys?

Well, maybe he had some sort of contractual agreement. But more than likely Dennis didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, including his brothers and his fans in the Beach Boys. Dennis was a very good person and would have tried to be able to do both - The Beach Boys and his own music.

But, his solo album wasn't released until after his death, and it just never got off the ground, so he stuck with what he knew.

I read on some website that the song Oh Lord was written by Dennis, and was intended to be on his second album Bamboo.

I agree that the song is the best from the cocaine sessions. Its amazing.

...I'm sort of hoping the same thing will happen to Bruce Johnston.

Maybe he'll stop suing people then.

I saw a few videos from the Lucky Old Sun premiere.

Things were a little shaky, but over all they were really good, and its good to see Brian back with some new material.
93  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: GRIN.MP3????????? on: June 06, 2007, 03:32:52 PM
I researched it, and wrote my conclusion on my blog as a follow up to my original finding.

You can read it here

http://warnakeysbeachboysblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/something-big.html

The ironic thing about this grin.mp3 myth is the fact that it originated from a site titled "SuRFiN' AGAiN - The authorized International Jan & Dean website". In fact, I was able to get information about the song Snowflakes on Laughing Gravy's Whiskers from this very same site here.

http://www.surfinagain.com/archives4.htm

Therefore, the owner of the site knew very well what that track was, where it came from and that it was not a smile track.

What a lying jerk!  Roll Eyes

Anyway, it seems like someone was just trying to throw some more wood into the figurative smile fire. Good tune though. Wink

hey harvey, do you own that record? Is there any way we could be 100% positive of that?

I don't think so, but they played You're So Good To Me quite often.
96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Alright, lets talk about Warmth of the Sun! on: May 28, 2007, 11:01:02 PM
On the new version of You're So Good To Me...I hate the change at the breakdown from 1:41-1:45. In the original recording someone was still singing "la la la la la la la" and it was mixed down very quietly. Although it may have been an accident, it was one of my favorite features of that song and I still listen for it everytime...
