26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New tour and album info coming to Brian's website soon on: June 13, 2010, 11:16:27 PM
Hi Andrew.

I take it you may be offended by someone calling Brian Wilson "probably able to, but possibly not all that good at playing Rhapsody In Blue on piano". It just sounds unlikely that Brian Wilson, who was constantly with Eugene Landy and being forced to take antipsychotic medication (who also has Tardive dyskinesia as a side effect), was working on the Beach Boys self titled album and gets bored then plays a 15 minute medley of Rhapsody In Blue and Cast Your Fate To The Wind?

Hey, that's pretty cool.

But after reading this paragraph: "Gershwin's great-nephew and estate trustee Todd Gershwin claims that Gershwin left behind "several dozen" fragments in various stages of completion. Wilson's not yet sure what he'll do with all these pieces: "I can't decipher the verse from the chorus from the bridge, so I'm going to try to insert some new music into them. I might even write some music for an introduction." I just can not see this album ever being that good. It's just a cover album. On Disney Records. http://articles.latimes.com/2009/oct/08/entertainment/et-brian-wilson8

Do people who are looking for the most original, independent, non-corporate music look to Disney Records to provide them with content? In my opinion no self respecting music fan can tolerate this.

"He [Brian Wilson] will follow that [Gershwin cover album] with an album of classic Disney songs, which the artist promises to “Brian-ize” with his trademark vocal stacks and unique arrangements. Release dates for each album have yet to be determined." http://www.brianwilson.com/news/press_gershwin.html

Sorry  if it bugs you Andrew, but I wish you had recorded that piano session in 1985 instead of writing about it in a magazine (that OF COURSE no one saw or knew you reported about) and I wish Brian Wilson would release two albums of material he wrote in the 1980s instead of the two he *cough* wants *cough* (is contractually obligated) to make.

In the 1960s it was all about making Brian's music, not anyone who writes you a paycheck. Not indie enough Brian Wilson.
27  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: June 13, 2010, 10:43:07 PM
I'm not sure I believe that it was REALLY Bruce Johnston who posted on The Beach Boys Britain Forum (the obvious, undisputed place to go for official Beach Boys news). It doesn't make much sense and its impossible to prove.

So, maybe Mike had bronchitis. Maybe he was having an asthma attack and couldn't get oxygen into his lungs. And that video Stegibo, the quality is pretty bad. The hand clapping is just as loud as the vocals so I can't really determine how much better or worse this is.

I just keep feeling so disappointed about this though. I just want my Beach Boys to be good.
28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New tour and album info coming to Brian's website soon on: June 12, 2010, 08:05:46 PM
Brian Wilson knows 2 minutes of the song Rhapsody in Blue on piano and he decided he can do a whole tribute album???

We'll see about this.

Man, you do talk some complete nonsense. In 1985, I sat and watched Brian play "Rhapsody In Blue" on the piano - in full - before segueing into "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", again in full. That took a lot longer than 2 minutes. Plus, he was offered the commission by the Gershwin Estate.

And yeah, we will see about it, in just over two months. I'm willing to wager we'll all be very pleasantly surprised.

Sense of humor? Internet translation lost.

I just found this video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PUJU9gxWbU

its mike love and john stamos and the new beach boys performing a medley of 3 hits on Dancing with the stars back in March. I managed to write down my feelings on that blog post. But MAN! Can anyone imagine something more cringe worthy than this???

Anyone?

I just looked on wikipedia and saw this about the new Al Jardine album:

"It will also feature a cover of "Honkin' Down the Highway" from the 1977 album The Beach Boys Love You."

Screw that crap.

AL JARDINE, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, STOP COVERING BAD SONGS AND WRITE YOUR OWN NEW MUSIC WITH HUMAN EMOTION IN IT. (i hope the America collaborations don't disappoint)

I'm glad that so many people are still interested in Jasper's board. I haven't looked at it in quite a while, but perhaps I will now.
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian not present for Gershwin Prize... on: June 05, 2010, 07:03:34 PM
I feel like Brian Wilson has such legendary status he could probably show up to the Gershwin Award Ceremony in sweats and a T-shirt and still be invited in and ushered to a seat in the front row. Don't award ceremonies always like to have as many big names on the bill as they can fit?
35  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Too Many Stickies in this forum on: June 02, 2010, 10:46:49 AM
I find myself never wanting to come to this particular area (General On Topic Discussions) because of the 10+ stickied threads at the beginning of the list of topics that have not had a post in months or years in them.

For organization sake and relevance can we delete those threads,  or better yet, make a new subcategory for them? Perhaps call it Beach Boys insider topics or something along those lines.

Does anyone agree?

It reminds me of Of Montreal! Very out there; very brave.

Really nice job.

Brother Records is sooooooooooo lame these days! I swear Brother Records is reduced to some nerd on a laptop typing the phrase "THE BEACH BOYS" into google all day.

This thread just reminded me of this autobiography that Brian Wilson wrote in 1970 that he let me hold onto that I had completely forgotten about until now. Would anyone like me to scan some pages from it??? It really is fascinating! I just can't believe that no one knew about this.

EDIT: Hey guys, sorry I can't scan any pages. Brian called me and asked for it back. =] I'm glad everything worked out for the best.  Grin

40  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / My new music on: May 26, 2010, 04:20:14 AM
Hi everyone,

I made my first album in December 2008 and I've been recording frantically since then to make my new album, and I've seriously overachieved. I've recorded almost 40 new songs; enough for a double album.

I uploaded 2 songs here: http://thelexingtons.bandcamp.com/album/isnt-it-nice-to-be-loved

The first is a cover song of a She & Him song, but the second song is original and much more orchestral than anything I've done in the past. I'm super proud of the mixing on these songs and I hope some of you will let me know what you think.

I actually really resonate with this song. It reminds me of Jellyfish (but less outrageous vocals).

I didn't listen to the original version, just the remix. But the mix sounds really nice on my system.

I'd love to hear more. =]

Hi Jared,

You know I listened and I just wanted to say congratulations! The EP sounds amazing. Its got the production of an Electric Light Orchestra album. I also really like the name, looking for diamonds! Isn't that we are all doing in some sort of way?

The best song on the EP is the electric car ballet in my opinion. Great work!

hey louielouie,

i don't think you should be embarrassed about your recordings. it's actually much better than a lot of people could muster. It's also a very interesting song and I like the way you used the guitar.

i wish i had more to talk about, but I like it.

Thanks for sharing.

47  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / Creating Backing Tracks for Live Shows on: February 14, 2010, 11:05:09 PM
I'm going to be performing a couple shows in March and I've been pretty obsessed with trying to make sure these shows go way better than the shows I've had in the past.

I used to record all of my tracks with real instruments and mix them and then take my completed instrumental tracks (that had been mixed for CD) and put them on an Ipod and then play guitar or keyboard over those and sing at my shows. But I realized that I wasn't getting the best sound that I could performing like this. For example, the sound coming from the Ipod through the speakers would seem very "compressed". This "compressed" sound didn't have anything to do with the loss of quality when mixing down to mp3, but instead, I found out I was making a mistake mixing by relying on compressors and limiters too much, which was brickwalling my songs so much that even when I tried turning up the volume it didn't seem to get louder, just more distored (especially when played over nice speakers). So I did some research and bought a couple things to help me out.

1. I bought a USB mixer that I can plug into a laptop so I can mix my guitars, keyboards, vocals and the backing track coming from the laptop, all at the same time. It seems simple, but I always just preferred digital mixers or trusting the sound guy at whatever venue (huge mistake).

2. I got a wireless in-ear monitor system, so we can hear the tempo and melody that we are supposed to be singing in our ears. I realized that not hearing our backing tracks was another big problem that I had.

This is like the first major purchase I have made on musical equipment in quite a while, so I'm a little bit anxious, but I think I deserve it.

I also want to share one of the songs I'm going to be singing during these shows. I've been really loving orchestral music lately, so I want to finish some really good orchestral/pop songs, but its just impossible to make that kind of music without software, so I've been making my backing tracks using the Miroslav Philharmonic VST plug-in and Adobe Audition to mix it. I am going to be playing piano live over this track, so if it feels a bit empty when you listen to it, its because the primary instrument, the piano, is purposefully left out of this live mix. I also tried hard to get great dynamics in this song and a lot of emotion. I hope you'll listen to it.

http://www.thelexingtons.net/isn't it nice to be loved (click track).wma This is lossless .WMA format. I intend to play this through a Zune or through a laptop.

PLEASE READ THIS: This is a click track! In the left channel is what I would hear in my ear (the tempo, the fake violin telling me the melody to sing, the other strings for chord reference, etc.). And in the right ear is a mono mix of what the audience will hear. If you want to hear the song without the click track just isolate the right channel! You just send the left channel to the wireless in-ear monitors and the right channels goes to the speakers in the Venue you will be performing. It's as easy as that!

Also, all of this information about backing tracks and click tracks was completely new to me just a couple days ago, so if anyone has any experience with backing tracks or who can listen to this file on a some good monitors, could you post a reply and let me know what you think about this topic?

Hey Brigadier,

It reminds me a bit of something the Zombies probably would have wanted to do around the Odessey album. I like the "I knew I was a creep" line too.
Is this going to be on your new album?
