So Dennis was bloody after the scuffle with Ray Davis. I wonder what Davis looked like?

I lived in the Bay area in the 1970's through the 1990's and was a regular reader of the San Francisco Chronicle. Joel Selvin was a music critic for them and a rather harsh critic of the Beach Boys. Even when he praised them it was backhanded. You see, this was San Francisco and it was way too hip for the Beach Boys, I caught a lot of flack for my obsession but I did win some people over. I would take whatever Selvin says with a grain of salt

Bruce also seems to dislike the Friends album

I just read the Dalton article again and it made me think that someone should really do a tv series about the Beach Boys where incidents like Zuma Beach etc. are dramatized. They could really get into detail, you know, all the famous and funny incidents involving Brian. Coming to Netflix.

Yep, you're correct it is the Groovies, my mistake. It's from a thread on the other board. Coincidently  I was the other guy in the room with Les and John Pickens when we gave Brian the third degree. He was completely there mentally but somewhat coked up. It was December, 1981 at the Dunfy Hotel in San Jose.

Was just reading a story of an encounter of some of the Flaming Lips with Brian in the 1970's. It got me to thinking, as I have over the years, what was Brian's daily routine like in the first half of the '70's, you know, before Landy," Brian is Back " and touring again. I think we know he didn't spend two years in bed. Stuff like that has always fascinated me.

It's possible the group wasn't even aware of Brian's appearance on the Inside Pop special or cared about it. They may have been touring, I'm sure someone knows. I mean Caroline No was released under Brian's name. I think we care a lot more about this stuff than the BB's did.

I lived in the Bay area for 20 years back in the 1970's and '80's and I used to read Joel Selvin reviews in the San Francisco Chronicle. Selvin used to give the Beach Boys some tough write-ups. He actually worked for the Beach Boys in 1976 in publicity but he had to keep up the San Francisco hipper than thou attitude when it came to the Beach Boys. Sounds like an interesting book though.

I just love this song, play it over and over and over again.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys /Santana/Joan Baez USSR '79: any leaks of video/recordings on: April 13, 2021, 06:28:16 AM
This was around the time the USSR in invaded Afganistan. I believe that had something to do with it. Could be wrong though. The story was on the front page of the SF Chronicle with a photo of the Boys at a press conference.

Maybe it had something to do with being involved with Landy because that's when it seemed to surface. Possibly because this was the start of his solo career he wanted a new sound. His voice sounds remarkably like the lead on the MFQ's on TCBTN.

Now that Icon is in charge maybe they won't screw it up.

Do most people feel that the genesis of this voice is from the Modern Folk Quartet's "This Could Be The Night" ? I know this is Spector but it still seems a somewhat odd choice.

I've always really liked this album a lot. However it's the only time that I felt that Brian's songs were the weakest ones on a Beach Boys album.

I'm sure Mike and Dean couldn't afford to pay very much
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's vocal decline - when is it first noticeable to you? on: January 01, 2021, 09:38:16 AM
Man, I don't hear any "decline" at all. It's a beautiful vocal. I think some of you guys have a narrative in your head and you're going to stick with it no matter what.

I just went and listened to Awake and I find none of the issues that you mention. His falsetto is mostly intact. I guess it's in the ears of the beholder
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's vocal decline - when is it first noticeable to you? on: December 27, 2020, 09:18:59 AM
when you hear Brian sing things like Awake and Sail Plane in the late '60's early '70's it's obvious his voice is still intact. What some people refer to as his voice deteriorating as early as 1967 is just a change in style of singing. To the fans it wasn't obvious until 1976, of course there is the mysterious improvement for Matchpoint.
21  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike November 1982 Jamaica Music Fest Interview Crashed by Dennis (and Gage) on: December 19, 2020, 01:36:09 PM
Of course it usually depends whose side you're on in the whole Sonny Wilson vs. Cassius Love saga. I've always been a Wilson supporter and have been very forgiving of the Wilson foibles.  I wonder though how we would feel if Mike had brought Manson into the Boy's circle and married Dennis's daughter and been a habitual drug and booze abuser. I guess some people would hate him even more than they do now... if that's possible.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike November 1982 Jamaica Music Fest Interview Crashed by Dennis (and Gage) on: December 18, 2020, 10:24:42 AM
Apart from the subtext here which is wonderful, this was the year that Mike shaved off his beard. It's hard to believe this is the same guy from 1970-'71, Mike's" hillbilly- Jesus " period. He shaved off about 20 years and really does look great. The way that Dennis nonchalantly walks in literally carrying Mike's guilt in his arms is hilarious.

I gotta say anybody that is absolutely sure they are hearing Brian on this recording must have a much clearer copy than I do.
