Wow, a collaboration between many talent artists to cover a classic Beach Boys tune by separately recording and then piecing together their performances--what a neat and original concept!

Love it--this totally sounds like it could be a lost Michael Jackson cut. Can't wait to hear the finished product!

Thanks so much for the kind words, guys! This was actually the tune that set off my SMiLE project way back in 2008 I couldn't figure out where to stop my cover due to the segue into Song for Children, and it all kind of took off from there. I recorded the vocals over the course of 2 years in 3 different homes, and spliced the best takes together--hopefully it sounds like one performance Smiley To answer your question rab, it's a soundfont based on samples from a real harpsichord. I love how it sounds--when and if I wrap up the whole SMiLE project, I may go back and replace the H&V/DYLW harpsichord parts with it.

I'm still plugging away at the last 2/3 of my SMiLE recreation, but thought I'd post an early mix of Wonderful. This isn't what's going to wind up on Suite 2 (I've got something a little more "out there" in the works), but I like this version too much not to release it.

Hope you enjoy!

Thanks guys! Glad you like it. It feels good to be getting back into production again!

Hey all! Life's gotten in the way of recording for me the last half a year or so, but seltaeb, rab, and EgoHanger helped me shake the rust off with this e-collab of Let the Wind Blow.

They all did an awesome job, as usual (thanks again, guys!). Hope everyone enjoys!

So here's a question that's been bugging me for a long time. On the mono mix of Let the Wind Blow, there's an instrument playing the downbeats of the middle 8 (the "Let the bees make honey" part). It's absent on the stereo remixes. It's got a feel very similar to the drums on Do It Again or the cowbell on Slip On Through, which makes me think it probably uses a similar multi-tap delay effect. It sounds almost like a 1990s-era digital alarm clock, except it's clearly playing chords. I can't for the life of me figure out what instrument this is. Any ideas?

Really spectacular. I can't get over how much the intro sounds exactly like the original--I keep listening to it on repeat!

There's one thing that I can't quite wrap my head around. The intro is two 12-strings (one with the moving line, one with the "it's raining" line), but I swear to the heavens above that they sound like 6-strings. I just can't hear that distinctive chorus effect you get from a 12-string. You've obviously solved the mystery of that part, so.. are my ears deceiving me? Are you only playing one of the two strings in each pair? Whatever it is, bravo!

No need for all the negativity. seltaeb is probably as commercially successful as anyone who posts here, so I'm sure his skin is plenty thick. Anyway, a backhanded compliment deserves a mildly snarky reply, no?

You totally nailed it, Zache--super impressed with the water chant. I'd love to hear it close out BWPS-style (especially since you've already done Prayer). Well-done!

Thanks so much for all the great feedback, guys. As someone with zero training on the trumpet/French horn, I think I might be more proud of pulling off those horn riffs than anything else in one of my recordings (not counting the Add a Some Music e-collab.. That's still my all-time favorite Smiley).

Good to have you back Egon!

Thanks! I didn't know I had left!
13  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / Smiley Smilers Who Make Music / (another) Surf's Up cover on: December 06, 2013, 09:49:23 AM
Surf's Up was one of the first BB covers I ever did, just about 4 years ago.  Now that I've learned about some obscure mixing and mastering techniques such as "EQ," "compression," and "not sucking at mixing and mastering," I've re-recorded it. This version will eventually end up on my SMiLE recreation--I was going to wait to post it, but I've got a crazy busy 6+ months ahead of me that won't allow for me to work on much music of any kind, so I thought I'd throw it online now. Have a listen (and wait for the third movement--I added a twist that I'm pretty confident would be Brian-approved)!

Hmph. Well, thanks anyway. No big deal in the scheme of things.

I already wondered why you re-registered. I really don't have a clue what happened to your account. I just checked your username in that specific gopic, and noticed that your "old" account is labelled "guest". Which means somehow your account doesn't exist anymore. But how that happened? No clue. It does unfortunately also mean that your personal info (Pm's etc) is lost, and we cant connect your posting history to your new account. Sorry.   Undecided

So, do any mods konw happened to my account? I haven't posted in a few weeks and went to log in the other day, and it said that no account exists with my user name.  Same thing happened when I click the link to my user name in topics that I started (it still does--check the musicians' forum and click my name next to the e-collab thread).  I re-registered with the same name, and it was available.  Any idea what that's all about?  And can I hook up my old posts/info to this new account?
