The "In care of my sweet mountain" part is not on the Sandler original so I guess that's the part Brian added.  I've had that record since 1973 and I feel I hear something new in it during every play.

Surfin' Safari, 1962

Terry also sang lead on "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" for California Music... I also read somewhere that the Golden Penetrators had an old VW Bug painted gold that they caroused in.

The Japanese Smiley Smile cd has different mixes of some songs.  I recall that Heroes and Villains is missing the wavering sound effect recorded in the swimming pool, and Wonderful is missing some of the group dialog during the instrumental break.  There may be others.  They were fixed by the US release and the AP release.

In the Washington DC area, I never heard Little Bird on the radio, but Friends got played regularly for a short while, enough to memorize the lyrics.

I was sent a cassette copy of the first booted Smile tapes in 1982 from a friend in California. Needless to say I was pretty knocked out.

The reissued one says it's Duophonic, but it plays mono.

I was at a 1972 show in College Park, MD and Bruce asked the crowd if anybody was at the Moody Blues concert in Baltimore the night before.  I had been at that Moody Blues show.  They played the Surf's Up lp as the lead up to the Moody's appearance, so there must have been some interaction.

To answer the question about the 11/7/71 show intermission, it was probably a Jack Reilly thing.  He came out at the beginning of the show and admonished the crowd not to yell for particular songs until the end, as the set list was already determined.  Bruce Johnston told the crowd to go out into the lobby at intermission to register to vote (the voting age had been recently lowered to 18).  I don't recall a big rush to the registration booth.

I was at the  11/7/71 show at Georgetown University and there was an intermission.  Part 1 ended with Surfin' USA, Part 2 opened with Cool Cool Water.

I always thought "Whistle In" fit right over that part.

I consider political correctness as "moral fascism gone to charm school".  PC indignation is selective.  It is narrow- minded.  It's intolerant of human nature.  It's a pose of affluence (very upper-middle class).  It is never about the issue at hand, it is ultimately about power.  So it is bogus.  As a Kindergarten teacher might say, "Doesn't play well with others"...

15  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower on SACD on: July 09, 2016, 05:07:59 AM
I listened to the Sunflower sacd last night, and it is clearly the best recreation of the original lp sound I have heard.  I have the original white label promo ( a different cut than the regular release, and slightly inferior), a first week first press, a UK first press, a 1980 Dutch press, the 1990 cd, the twofer cd, the 2009 vinyl, and the original 8 track tape.  The bass tones sound tight and solid on only two versions- the first press and the sacd- all other copies I have have a boomy, indistinct bass.  The high end is smooth and well balanced, and I heard no background vocal problems.  My system is sacd player to tube pre-amp to tube amp to Klipsch Cornwall II horn speakers with the tweeter horns damped by one thickness of toilet paper (I know this sounds silly to some, but it works for me). The sacd does not perfectly match the original lp (I wouldn't expect it to, it was apparently tweaked during cutting), but I recommend it to anyone who has the playback capability, this sounds very carefully done.  I am waiting impatiently for the new vinyl now.

A sunday morning in 1954- they were probably going to church.
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Getting Hungry US 45 Generic Sleeve on: March 05, 2016, 05:12:21 AM
Serendipity on my part.  I happened to be in the record store the day the stock guy was taking new records out of boxes and overheard them talking about it as a Beach Boys record, so I bought it.

My first day of release purchase from 1967 (east coast) has a plain white sleeve.

I got my money back from First Wave as well, but he still owes me for the Jasper Daily photos that never came out.
20  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if the Beach Boys had fired Mike Love? on: November 06, 2015, 01:24:28 PM
I saw a lot of early 1970's shows.  Mike wasn't awkward, he was still the front man, telling jokes, introducing numbers, keeping the audience occupied while Carl switched guitars or Bruce switched to bass or whatever, which is what he has always done.

Yes, duophonic.

I inspect tenant housing for various public and private concerns in the rich sanctuary state of Maryland, fattened as always by DC money.   I'd estimate about half the immigrant adults I run into appear to have jobs and the rest are content with the gravy.
23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Am Brian Wilson: New Autobiography on: July 28, 2015, 04:19:55 AM
Listen to "An Occasional Man" by Jeri Southern from the 1950's.  It has a similar island vibe and the same clipped style of delivery.  I immediately thought of this record when I heard Zoe's song.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Love and Mercy - News and Reviews - First clip is out. on: June 03, 2015, 09:16:02 AM
My sister saw the film at a private screening in Florida last night.  She is a 50 year fan but not rabid enough to ever come here.  I expressed no interest in seeing this film having been burned horribly by other biopics in the past.  Her first impressions were these: It's a very "dark" film, lots of unhappiness portrayed; the two actors playing Brian are unconvincing but the great story makes it not matter; the Mike Love character is well played; the recording studio scenes are well done; Landy is portrayed as a monster.  She listened for comments by the other attendees after the show.  Verdict:  older people were more sympathetic/ younger people thought it was weird. That's it, I'm going......

5/1/71 May Day protest in DC.  Hippies around us partially ruined the show.
