Nice article! Ron is from my neck of the woods, as Olcott is 45 minutes from me. Once, in the '70's, the Beach Boys were doing a concert at Genesee Community College in Batavia, New York, which is 30 minutes from me the opposite direction from Olcott. The band was very late going on stage, and Mike came out and apologized for being late, saying they'd been up to Olcott to visit Ron and had gotten lost trying to find the college!

Phil also had the idea behind Warren Zevon's biggest hit... Warren was in the Everly Brothers touring band, and Phil was talking about a great old English horror film, saying that Warren should do a song and name it after the movie - thus was born "Werewolves of London"! Phil thought they should write it with the idea of it becoming a dance craze, everyone would be doing the "werewolves of London" dance. Took 15 minutes to write the tune...

Phil also had a big hit in England in '82 with Cliff Richard, "She Means Nothing to Me". My favorite of his solo albums is "Star Spangled Springer".
The Everly Brothers were also where Warren Zevon, another of my favorites that left us too soon, got his start.

The Everly Brothers were spectacular. I was fortunate enough to see them during their reunion tour in the '80's. Their "Roots" album is beautiful. All the early hits are timeless, and I also love their "Pass the Chicken and Listen" album. I'd also recommend lesser known songs like "Empty Boxes", "The Lord of the Manor" and "On My Way Home Again". Phil will be missed greatly, may he rest in peace. I'll do my crying in the rain...

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson is insanely overrated

Dennis unquestionably did some great work. Some of his material ranks with the best of the group's output. But Brian was able to get his music to the masses, whereas Dennis is more of a cult figure. Brian had the pressure of competing toe to toe with the Beatles. He had the pressure to produce material that supported a large network of family and band mates. That pressure, along with mental illness, caused him to collapse during Smile and through the following decades. Later , when Brian did create music, it was often with the proverbial gun to his head. Dennis perhaps benefitted from not having that pressure. He could do as he pleased. When it came time to do his solo tour, he backed off. Perhaps he feared that too much commercial success would draw him into that same pressure to produce.
And anyone who lists both "Cuddle Up" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again" as great songs should remember that they're basically the same song... Sorta like Brian's "Shortnin Bread"...
