26  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Endless Harmony, The Song on: July 19, 2020, 01:14:09 AM

I can forgive the lyrics a lot more, when I remember that it was written by someone who at the time wasn’t technically in the band. The song was written in 1972, a year after BJ was fired, or quit, or whatever the story is this week.

Nope, it was written and recorded just prior to Bruce leaving, April 1972.

Just wondering if Ten Years' Harmony was actually written and recorded on or before April 1972.

A year after that, on April 20, 1973, Bruce joined the BBs on stage for both encores at the Hollywood Palladium. After the concert had ended four other fans and I joined Bruce and his wife or girlfriend on stage as he sat at the keyboard and asked if we'd like to hear a new song he said he had just written. The song was Ten Years' Harmony.

I bought the single, by California Music on RCA Victor/Equinox records (as the B side of Don't Worry Baby, both sides listed as being produced by Bruce and Terry Melcher) in Feb. 1975. Its release date is listed on Bellagio as Sept. 1974. The recording sounds just like it did when Bruce sang it that night, just him and a piano. Certainly it could have been recorded in 1972, but when Bruce said in April '73 that it was a new song he had just written, I got the impression that it wasn't something he'd actually written and recorded a year earlier. But, that being said, from the standpoint of ten years of The Beach Boys, 1972 fits better than 1973.

Not as audible as on Chug-a-Lug or the new Dylan song, but Bruce mentions "Carl Wilson" during Mike's "tried Al Jardine" lead on the Live in London version of Barbara Ann.

28  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Sunflower was a double album... on: February 14, 2020, 01:25:05 AM
Thank God Warner Bros rejected the earlier BB submissions for Sunflower. What was ultimately released was dramatically better than the earlier track lists.

Back when Sunflower was released I had no idea that there had been earlier album submissions with overall weaker track listings. When I first heard Sunflower I simply assumed the BBs had conspired together to release an amazingly great album.

The WB rejections are further evidence that the BBs would have benefited, on numerous occasions over the years, from stronger management.

That being said, the BBs recorded some outstanding music during this time that did not appear on Sunflower, including San Miguel, I just Got My Pay, Lady/Fallin' in Love, and Cottonfields (1970).

Lookin' forward to the forthcoming Feel Flows box set.

Followed Mike’s advice to have a cool head and a warm heart, which compelled me to follow Brian’s advice to sign the petition.

Monday night, Variety obtained a statement from Love, in response to the petition and Wilson’s support of it: “We look forward to a night of great music in Reno and, as always, support freedom of thought and expression as a fundamental tenet of our rights as Americans. Peace & Love, Mike Love.”

We are extremely fortunate to have Stephen Desper posting on this board, freely giving his time to share information, experiences and insights from a firsthand perspective. I'm incredulous that he has to put up with inane comments like some of those posted in this thread.

Steve, please know that I appreciate your posts and have gained a much deeper understanding of what transpired during your tenure with the band, which also happens to be my overall favorite period of Beach Boys recorded music.

32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are The Beach Boys letting their fans down with digital only archival releases on: January 21, 2020, 01:20:53 AM

I burn my digital purchases to CD. Nowadays, we listen to music more in the car than anywhere else and are trying to find a way to put a 10-disc player in our new vechicle. We still buy a lot of CDs and, when we had our old vechicle with a 10-disc player, it was great to throw in a bunch of our new purchases and listen.

Most of my digital purchases are in Apple's m4a format and the new vehicle's system only plays mp3s. Converting things to play on the car system is a time-consuming pain-in-the @ss. We have Sirius for a three month trial and have no interest in continuing it (or getting any other streaming service). Anyway, CDs serve us best, and there is a single disc player in the car and multi-disc players in our home.

Now, if I can just find a Walkman-type tape player to patch into the new vehicle's sound system.  Grin

Continue to burn all the CD-Rs you want, but these days for listening in your new vehicle it's easiest to put your music on your phone and simply stream to your vehicle's audio head unit via Bluetooth.

But if you still want to go the disc route, since you mention that your tracks are in Apple's aac M4a format, it's easy to burn your music to CD-R as MP3s using iTunes or Apple's Music App. Just create a playlist for each desired disc, then Burn Playlist to Disc > Disc Format > MP3 CD.

I’ll never forget Jeff’s kindness in arranging for my three granddaughters to go up on stage during Barbara Ann last year. He’s been a key player in the world of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson for close to four decades now and during that time has easily been my favorite of the BW/BBs falsetto singers.

Jeffery, best wishes for good health and thank you for your superb vocal contributions to my all-time favorite music.
34  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Campfire Acoustic Session :Endless Summer TV Series on: November 05, 2019, 07:28:16 PM

Filmed at Walt Disney World in Florida, outside on the sand between the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian Village Resort but closest to the Grand Floridian.

That's the location for the "Kokomo" video. The 1989 TV series was shot at Universal Studios in LA, so probably a backlot beach setup for the campfire.

You are correct! (Apparently my brain is getting senile.) As southbay noted earlier, filming for the campfire scenes took place at Universal Studios in LA in May 1989. The series also featured concert footage filmed at the Pacific Amphitherter in Costa Mesa on May 27, during the BBs/Chicago summer 89 tour.

The BBs Endless Summer was a syndicated series consisting of 8 one hour shows. Executive producer was Steve Binder, director of The T.A.M.I. Show and producer of Elvis Presley's 1968 Comeback Special (officially "Elvis" or "Singer Presents Elvis"). The BB's campfire sessions are reminiscent of the causal sit-down portions of the Elvis special, featuring Presley and sideman conversing and jamming in a relatively unscripted manner.

The series aired in San Diego Saturday nights on a non-network TV station from June 17 thru August 5, 1989, but due to its syndicated nature air dates may have varied in other markets.

When watching this, I can't help but keep wondering if Landy is lurking literally *just* off camera. He must have been there in close proximity, I would think, right? I don't think Landy would have delegated that to one of Brian's other minders; I'd tend to think Landy himself would want to be there for a network TV appearance.

Yeah, my thoughts as well.

Where were these scenes filmed? The poor video quality makes it hard to really tell if this is staged on a studio, or actually on some little private beach, and if so, which beach?

Filmed at Walt Disney World in Florida, outside on the sand between the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian Village Resort but closest to the Grand Floridian.

In fact, when watching this (in direct contrast to some unnervingly weird Brian solo footage from the time involving no other BBs members), it makes sense how Brian "wanted to be a Beach Boy again" in 2012, and how much it was a real bummer to be edged out of the band. Brian clearly, despite any dysfunctional and unhealthy relationships with some members, gets something positive out of being with those guys. It's just like riding a bike. For better or worse, it seemed that Brian was shining when around his old mates.

This video is from 1988, but, yeah, 2012, two dozen years later, works equally as well, and I agree completely.

36  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jeff Foskett on: November 03, 2019, 09:35:02 PM
Well deserved praise for Jeff Foskett from the Amazon listing for his forthcoming CD:

What a thrill it was to hear Jeff singing “Adios" with his unique, plaintiff voice. Seems to fit the song perfectly. Jeff is in many ways an unsung hero - the man in the back of the band who is meticulously teaching background parts including phrasing dynamics and all the subtleties to background singers. I remember he got David Crosby, Carly Simon and myself together to sing “In My Room”. He taught us the parts in about ten minutes. Great teacher and vocal arranger. So wonderful to see his long overdue solo record. —Jimmy Webb

I remember the first time I heard Jeffrey’s voice - standing beside him sharing a live mic, singing harmonies. Flawless pitch, in the pocket, completely committed to the performance. His voice a perfect instrument. An experience I’ve been lucky to have many times. — Robert Lamm (Chicago)

Jeffrey Foskett has been a close friend and peer for decades whom I respect immensely for his incredible voice and musical sensibilities. Our band, America, has worked with and sang with him in every capacity from live touring together with The Beach Boys since the 70's, to recording beautiful background vocals on many of our recordings, to actually occasionally filling in for band members if needed. He is a great vocal arranger and seems to effortlessly add beautiful vocal parts to any song. I particularly marvel at the work he did with me on the Brian Wilson song, Caroline No, for our Back Pages project in 2012. There are precious few singers who equal the voice of Jeffrey Foskett. — Dewey Bunnell (America)

It didn't take years of touring together with the beach boys to discover what was glaringly apparent from day one. Jeff is a talent of immeasurable beauty. There are voices & then there are VOICES. Who can sing higher? Who is the most expressive? We all have a list of qualities we listen for. Very rarely does someone combine them all to create something truly signature. Jeff's is such a voice. We have been fortunate to sing, work & play together for forty years. As he's heard me say many times... Jeff is one of my favorite people on the planet. — Gerry Beckley (America)

My dear friend Jeff Foskett has brought his unique voice and production skills, honed from years with the Beach Boys to create his own take on some classics that show the breadth of his talents. Carl would be proud xxx — Christopher Cross

Knowing Jeff Foskett since he was a student at UCSB and had a band called Reverie, throughput the years he has been a vocal blessing to all of us. Whether it be The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson and his band, or The Endless Summer Beach Band; so many variations and so many groups have been blessed to have him be an integral member. Not only are all the accolades true regarding Jeff’s vocal range and abilities, but the thing that makes him special is the fact that he is tremendously giving, loving, and a person who never fails to be of service to others. I am delighted that his vocal talents are showcased on this album and I’m forever grateful for his friendship, and the blessing of his talents. — Mike Love

Jeff’s voice is one of the top five greatest voices I’ve ever heard, because of the way he expresses himself. It blows me away. — Brian Wilson

No jukebox in Chez Jay.
39  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noven Jaisi on: August 07, 2019, 12:03:19 AM

Granted, now that he does official work (I guess?) for Mike, the proper clearances *may* now be getting obtained (though the recent video posted just shows a rather blanket copyright notice for Meleco, Brother, and Capitol, and actually shows "Capitol/EMI" which arguably doesn't exist anymore and is in fact Capitol/UMe).

Good observation - as you say, Capitol/EMI no longer exists and in fact was acquired by Universal Music Group 7 years ago.
40  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noven Jaisi on: August 05, 2019, 06:27:12 PM

Point #2: I've been wondering the exact same thing for 4 years or however long it's been since Noven Jaisi first showed up with a trailer for something called "Still Tourin'", a fantasy Mike Love touring video documentary which apparently he dreamed up himself. Followed by featurettes and trailers on everything from ESQ magazine, to Mike's book, to Jeff Foskett.

Go figure.  Huh

Oh yeah, I remember that now. So the question is, was Mike a paying client for the Still Tourin' video, or did Mr. Jaisi do it on his own, with the result that Mike was impressed and became a paying client?

41  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noven Jaisi on: August 05, 2019, 06:02:29 PM
Prior to reading this thread, I'd never heard of Noven Jaisi. Here's a link to a list of "People I work with" which is heavily Mike Love and touring Beach Boys centric ... https://www.novenjaisi.com/clients.

Although he's got quite a few projects on Youtube, I wouldn't call him a "YouTuber" pre se; it appears that the majority of his videos are for paying clients, including Mike Love.

IMO the guy is a very talented video editor.

42  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Noven Jaisi on: August 04, 2019, 11:19:52 PM
It's news because it's a really well done film that has just hit Youtube.

Why would permission be needed from Brain and Al? The copyright at the end says Capitol / EMI / Meleco Records & Brother Records.

43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Terry Melcher on: August 02, 2019, 11:19:12 PM

FYI - Two vintage hit singles produced by Terry Melcher, "Good Thing" and "Hungry" by Paul Revere & The Raiders are on the "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" soundtrack, with "Good Thing" also being co-written by Terry. Both went top-10 back in '66. So a new and younger audience will perhaps get a chance to hear and appreciate them.

Just tying that in to, like, three other current discussions.  Smiley

In addition to producing Hungry and Good Thing and co-writing Good Thing, while Mark Lindsay sings lead, Terry Melcher sings all the other vocals on both tracks.
44  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Big Beat 1963 on: June 16, 2019, 04:36:29 PM
Truly a bummer, especially since the compilation was only available as a digital download or via streaming. iTunes in the US has 10 selections available (album only) all by either Brian Wilson, The Honeys, or Bob & Sheri. All the Beach Boys stuff is gone.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson Corvette For Sale on: April 30, 2019, 08:33:01 PM
Yes, Brian has owned multiple Corvettes through the years. Remember this photo of his 1966 Corvette painted in Chevy's "Sunfire Yellow" color:

The value on this one is obviously in the provenance and the celebrity connection, not to mention having the original title signed by Brian. It was a hot car at that time, as described in the listing, but I prefer the 50's and 60's designs myself.

Why did Brian get "Beach Boys" embossed on the car? He's proud of his band, obviously, no matter what shenanigans were going on at any given time.  Smiley

Wonder who the 66/67 Mustang convertible behind the 'vette belongs to?
46  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: April 23, 2019, 04:48:41 PM

More fuel for the fire since this thread started. Claims to be an early mix.

https://youtu.be/xrwCCHY1ibI

For sure Brian sings the falsetto on the released version.

As far as this YouTube post claiming to be "The Beach Boys - Getcha Back (Rare Early Studio Demo)," I don't hear any Beach Boys vocals or Foskett anywhere in this mix. Definitely could be Adrian Baker.

47  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New stereo mix of “I Get Around” on: April 19, 2019, 03:22:33 PM
Adding to sixtiesstereo's post above, when listening to digitally extracted stereo (DES) through stereo speakers, best results are obtained when you are centered between both speakers. (Unfortunately, with the popularity these days of mono bluetooth and mono smart speakers, listeners of those devices will be unable to take advantage of listening to this technology.)

DES technology has produced results ranging from fairly good to very impressive, and, as previously stated, it is not related to duophonic or other types of electronically processed stereo from the past.

Software used to create DES includes Magix SpectaLayers Pro, Audionamix TRAX Pro, XTRAX STEMS, and SourceRE Pro. The technology used to create digitally extracted stereo will no doubt improve in the future, but currently less than half of mono recordings can be successfully be converted to stereo using DES.

Another example of really well done digitally extracted stereo from mono is track 20, Mother In Law, on this CD from Eric Records: http://www.ericrecords.com/htf_jb_56-62.html

. Releasing Cool Cool Water as a single, with It's About Time as the b-side

Good list of missteps. Just for the record, Forever was the b-side of single edit of Cool Cool Water, with the promo copies going out to radio stations containing only Cool Cool Water, in mono on one side and stereo on the other, so there was no chance for DJ's to flip the single over to Forever, which, IMO, had a much great chance of getting Top 40 radio airplay.
