151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: RollingStone.com Article on “Problem Child” Theme on: January 12, 2017, 01:52:26 PM
For what it was, I found Problem Child to be a catchy little ditty.  I remember seeing the video for it on I think it was NBC Friday Night Videos?
152  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Which Beach Boys Song Would Be A Hit If Updated? on: January 12, 2017, 01:50:24 PM
No BB songs that I can really think of.  They are basically culturally irrelevant in this day and age, it pains me to say, except perhaps among the Geritol crowd.  Maybe "Wipeout", but that is a stretch to call that a BB's song even that would not be successful based upon surf music or Beach Boys bona fides...

Okay- politics and music aside- Trump takes the cake for narcissistic President of the US. WHo do you possibly have in mind to "trump" him on that?

Obama, easily the biggest narcissist to every occupy the WH.  Did you see the size of that presidential seal behind him at his eternal farewell address last night?  The seal was so huge it was Nazi rally creepy in scope.  Almost as large as BO's head.  And who names his dog after himself?  He's the only one I've ever heard of...
154  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Wishes for Beach Boys 2017 on: January 09, 2017, 05:46:08 PM
Do they even really exist anymore?  Not as far as I am concerned.  Even the 2012 reunion was sorta bogus.  But as a studio production band, lots of their music has been kind of bogus.   Though a lot of it really good and from MIU on, a lot of it really bad....
155  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: God Only Knows - Worst Record of Year on: January 09, 2017, 05:39:07 PM
I was reading some site had an article on the worst 500 reviews ever written and it stated that the very early Rolling Stone reviews, from the first few issues apparently, were sometimes written by whomever was in the office, no prior experience or particular expertise required.  Like the person who opened the mail.  While I'm not totally opposed to hearing the opinion of an average fan, these reviews were usually taken by the reader to be written by someone "more qualified" to rate the music being reviewed and not presented as being reviewed by the secretary or mail room staff, for example.

Lately I have gone back and read some of the very early BB reviews in RS.  Some of them are laughably bad, the writing and the musical and cultural assumptions they made.  Like the Wild Honey review, the Boys were actually chastised for discovering soul music several years after the Beatles and Stones, as if the early copying of black pop music were the end all and be all of pop relevancy for white acts.  And I'm reasonably sure that the Boys had discovered black music very early on, as has been covered many times but I guess back then the reviewers were still pretending the Boys had never been anywhere in their lives but Bikini Beach.

Then later on, the Surf's Up review turns into a mini-review of Wild Honey all of a sudden (why I do not know), and extols the Beach Boys use of harmony on that (Wild Honey) album, while many other reviews have decried the lack of same harmonies on that album.

To be sure, some of the later RS reviews were thoughtful, mostly positive when called for and also negative when called for.  But boy, were the Boys so ever misunderstood during the late sixties.  Many of the albums, really just about all of them from Smiley Smile through 20/20 were at the time slammed for being too slight or scattered, etc.  I happen to think their run of albums from All Summer Long through Holland (excepting So Tough) was among the strongest of any groups of that era.

The phrase that stuck in my mind from the time I read it originally back in the day (1970) to the other day when I re-read it was "The Beach Boys are plastic madmen and rock and roll geniuses" from the mostly positive Sunflower review.  Probably in retrospect they were closer to actual madmen than plastic ones!  And though the genius eventually faded, they were close to being pop genius level for a good long stretch.

156  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Are the Beach Boys 'Famous'? on: January 05, 2017, 04:48:22 PM
Fairly famous as a group, but individually not so much at all.  That is why the individual members are quite often referred to in the media as Beach Boy Al Jardine, Beach Boy Mike Love, Beach Boy Brian Wilson and so forth....otherwise a lot of folks might not know who the hell you are even talking about.  Also, their greatest fame occurred before the explosion of the mass media and coverage of the pop music scene, and coupled with their quaint name, they were quickly consigned to oldies status.  Kinda like most people can't name individual members of the Four Seasons....except for Valli who was a pop star in his own right.

"So as late as September of this year (well after FIFTY ZILLION reports were out about the horrible things Mike's buddy had done and said), "

Well, at least you don't exaggerate much. Roll Eyes  Now I want them to play the inauguration just to watch all the splodey heads on this site....

Elvis, Elvis, Elvis....and I don't mean Abbott's partner.  Could sing several styles of music incredibly well and with great emotional impact.  Still the King....
159  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love on the LA Light Album on: January 03, 2017, 04:17:49 PM
I seem to remember reading somewhere that Brian felt caught in the middle between the meditators (Mike and Al) and the other Wilsons.  As a result of feeling such strain, he usually just sided with the Mike-Al Axis at some point.  Now whether that (pressure from Mike and Al) was his actual motivation or not, I don't know, but apparently he did start voting with Mike and Al against his brothers....as for actually selling his vote, I don't think even Brian would do that....

In some ways this is a lot of the issues of the past decade or so coming to a head, only with this it's playing out internationally instead of being confined to fans talking on forums and social media groups. I'll repeat again, actions have consequences. And, stewardship over a brand identity and legacy dating back half a century should involve some responsibility over how the public views it, including trying to avoid anything that will create a negative perception of that brand and identity and instead focusing on things like optics and PR when it comes to the general public. That often involves biting one's tongue and checking personal feelings or desires at the door, and avoiding things that would divide the fan base in a negative way.

I think the fan base has been divided, quite possibly in a negative way, for decades.  You see it in action with posts like that of OSD or LSD or whatever his moniker is....

I thought with wry amusement that the above dummied up concert poster which stated something like "let's show them that love trumps hate" should have really stated, "Let's show them that we hate Trump".  And that my friends is not an expression of love.....really labelling a political opponent irresponsibly as a "hater" and hating them is not an expression of love either.

Did Paul's actual celery munching has made it out to any of the actual released material?  Or was it replaced by a Wrecking Crew muncher?  Heh!

I believe they should play the inauguration.  It may help to unite the American people.  As for all the little snowflakes on here, grow up.  You don't have to worry about the BB's musical legacy, that is set in stone...you also don't have to worry about the BBs "brand".  (worrying about a bunch of multi-millionaires' "brand"....who the hell thinks this way??).

164  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: R.O.T.O.R.'s bizarre Beach Boys scene on: December 18, 2016, 01:09:36 PM
Coincidence I would say.  Unlikely naming an orderly would be considered a tribute.  Then, if meant to honor Carl, why not, uh, spell it Carl instead of Karl.  Don't know the context of the character in the episode but the name Karl to me looks like an attempt to vilify the character with the K in the name, sort of an amerika type move....

The eighties stuff was pretty much a crap-fest and the less said or heard about it the better!

myKe luHv's leaky, unseaworthy boat sunk many moons ago. Now, just like his reputation, it gathers barnacles with the passage of time with schools of fish looking for food passing by it with no interest.

Uh, yeah, so has your boat and reputation.  Though I doubt you ever had a boat to begin with....

169  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If the other BBs had Brian's hearing impairment on: December 13, 2016, 12:55:20 PM
All the BBs likely had pretty bad hearing impairment after years of touring and performing with loud amplification equipment.  It's an occupational hazard...I basically damaged my hearing going to rock concerts when younger.

171  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Jan and Dean quote by on: December 10, 2016, 02:24:08 PM
I'm not too sure Jan and Dean were represented truly by many of the Dave Marsh' liner statements regarding them.   Sounds like someone trying to pass them off as really cool during a time period (early 70's) in which they were regarded as anything but.  Fair enough, he was getting paid to market their music.  I like Jan and Dean, but many of Marsh's liner comments just don't seem to ring truthfully to me.  They are entertaining to read however.

Does Mike really want to get asked what he thinks of LGBT and other minority folks who are going to get their rights stripped away? Like if he gives two sh*ts about it?

Please give some evidence to support your assertions of stripping away of rights.

Little Girl I Once Knew was certainly a hit.

I don't think they are popular enough to perform at the inauguration.  How about the Stones?
175  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why Brian Dumped Mike: Exhibit A, \ on: November 28, 2016, 05:31:19 PM
Exhibit A for the defense: Brian didn't seem to mind having himself officially credited as the lyricist of 'California Girls' for 30 years.

Great point - in many interviews over the years . .

I recall that at some point in the '70's the lyrics suddenly offended some in the feminist movement.

Probably at the point when women started recognizing that they are humans, not consumer goods.

Probably at the point when some women in the feminist movement started recognizing that they are humans, not consumer goods.  Though funnily enough, I have never personally met a woman who considered herself a consumer good ever, at least not to my knowledge.  That would be a rather odd woman, would it not, one who considered herself a consumer good, though maybe a prostitute might?
