That thing has got 2 rock-hard danglers and a big old sack full o' jizz!
This might make FUM HIM THE MOURDOROUS BASTASRD seem replaceable. Maybe. Well at least some of my observations are recognized! I do hear the POB/LA similarities... Denny worked his ass of to make that LP work well in his favor. Too damn bad it didn't make a splash. Shame.

Now DENNIS WILSON had balls. The progressiveness of POB and Bamboo, mixed with the eccentric weirdness of Brian's Love You period, plus a TOUCH of Carl's romantic style is where the BB's should have stayed in that period. Rewriting Hawaii in the 80's just don't cut the mustard. You mean upbeat? I don't quite get the rewriting Hawaii/80's reference. Do you mean the 70's on Kona Coast/MIU? That's obvoius. Or do you think KTSA was recycling? I don't hear that at all. The only recycling I hear (not including their own jab at Kona Coast/Hawaii/70's) happened 5 years after KTSA with California Calling. Totally rad! On the other hand, I full on agree about POB & surrounding Denny sessions!! That album is better than most of the BB LP's post 1971!! That album has some BIG OL'NARDS!! That's the inspiration I'm talkin' 'bout!!! There's no lying back on that release. No coasting. I hear coasting on a lot of the 70's stuff, but NOT POB. That thing has got 2 rock-hard danglers and a big old sack full o' jizz! The other albums don't have that. I appreciate Carl's voice, but it's not even used to affect on LY, more generously on LA. You might say that's where they should have been during that era cuz that's where history tells you they were... but think about what they could have done!! Retrospect aside, if I had been a Beach Boy I'd have stepped in and said, 'come on guys, we can do better than this.' It could have been much better than what it was. Might as well have been some lame middle-of-the-road LP and not the Beach Boys. Maybe somewhere/somehow subconsiously, Denny thought that the BB's were losing focus and cuts his own LP to blow recent & forthcoming BB stuff out of the water. Just a thought.

ehhh.... perhaps. Not entirely, but it has something to do with it, for certain. I like my BB's music to have some balls behind it. I think of them having energy & spirit. It might start with a good track and continue from there. I love stuff that's off kilter, progressive, different... whatever you wish to call it, but it needs to strike me as such and not sound uninspired, bland, sanitized, whatever. Which is where LA & LY fall for me. They sound like 2 albums that the guys were coasting and didn't have their foot on the excelerator. They need to sound like they were worked on and not just thrown together. On LY, they just sound exhausted as a group. Slow dirges that have no real life. Then along somes KTSA which sounds like a real effort and not something lifeless. I wish I could be in other peoples heads to hear what they're hearing, because I don't hear it. I wish I could explain it better than that, but that' where I'm at, I guess. As complete albums I don't really care for them- as 2 groupings of individual songs- they have their moments. It's like trying to describe why so much of their mid to late 80's material blows so hard. Why does it? The songwriting seems to be good, but the means in which it's pulled off doesn't quite cut da mustid! Same for 15BO, LY, LA, & MIU (to a lesser degree). KTSA just sounds more solid to me. Do that help any?

The mid and late 70s were an interesting period for the Beach Boys in terms of quality. 15 Big Ones is definitely bargain basement, then Love You which is awesome IMO, then they slipped a bit with MIU, and then they came back with LA which is every bit as good as Love You IMO.
This might make you exempt from the KTSA party!

I bought this LP at the mall in 1983. The same trip saw me leave with the Sharkey's Machine soundtrack & the Sy Snoodles Band Playset from Return Of The Jedi!!! What can I tell ya? Admittedly a dork. There are still some fine gems to be found on this LP. Played it a few weeks ago. The Sharkey's Machine LP is intentionally neglected!

Right the f*** on Demon! Tell it like it T-I-Z! The drums are a result of overmicing and spreading them out over probably close to 1 dozen tracks, being too predominant in the mix, and recording them seperately. If the drums & When Girls Get Together are the only issues that we collectively have- then, what's not to like? By the way... you're invited to the KTSA party that Emdeeh and I are throwing.

Because Love You, like Today, is meant to be heard as a full album!! It's all about context.
Actually, speaking of which, when I was first listening to the GV Box I was thinking "These songs are all really cool! Who says the later-period sucks?" I listened to the Love You songs in particular and they really struck me. I was happy that the rest of the album was as cool.
Curious! To me, several of the tracks stand better alone than the album does as a whole. Too many dead spots that make me want the next track to come up. Hey Jason, if Brian was trying to sabotage the band with his vocal, maybe his attempt to make the entire album weird, ala: keybass, lack of BIG harmonies, lack of truly good songs, so that the general public would stay away. Sabotage might have been the intent at the time, but it is now his favorite album, and a good number of fans as well. That I find Interesting.

Anyone here familiar with Heywood Banks??
!!! Yes! Seen the man live and met him! I have all of his albums on my iPod. My grandmother is great friends with the guy. I'm amazed that anyone else has ever heard of him, he's been around for years. Awesome!! Heywood is the cleanest comedian I've seen in years. The guy slays me! Do you have his most recent- Pretending I'm Not Home?

OK... I now understand the fascination with this LP (I'm being serious, now- not in normal smart-ass mode). I see how some might equate it to SMiLEy and that's how this revelation came upon me. Both are intimate & sparse in terms of instrumentation. Both are handsome in terms of vocal arrangement. Both were co-written& fully produced by a man who at the time of SMiLEy, was tired of working his anus off in the studio for something that never came to full fruition. Frustrated by this, a made a more laid-back LP came out of it's shadows. Love You is similar in that his bandmates wanted to see more of him. Under some pressure, he felt somewhat obliged to lend a hand. But, at the same time the effort to produce a 'bigger' album might have been out of the question both in terms of Brian's energy & ability considerating his physical & mental state.
Now in my ears (the disclaimer!), Love You is unintentionally wanting to be a more hip version of SMiLEy and not quite making the grade. A few simple songs (almost too simple). A few child-like tunes. A few faltered attempts at bigger production that almost make it. Nearly 10 Years after SMiLEy, the effects of excessive booze, drugs, & smokes have now altered the voices of Brian & Denny, thusly putting a bit of a damper on the album for me. The harmonies are not what they should/could be. If your voice is your bread & butter, wouldn't you want to take care of it?
After 'getting' what Love You is about, seeing why so many of you like it and realizing why this is the case, I still stand firm in stating that it's not my cup of meat. For a group that was once on top- it still sounds rushed to me. More demo-like than a real finished product ONLY knowing what they were capable of, collectively. It's certainly got it's moments, but for me... it falls flat. Again, I don't hate it, I just don't like it. It works in parts, but not as a whole.
Something else that dawns on me- why didn't Ten Years Of Harmony contain more Love You tracks? Only Roller Skatin' Child made the cut. Seems to me that an album that is revered as highly as Love You, should have better representation on a 70's 'hits' 2 LP-er. Wuzzup?

OK... I'd seen extended thread on the last board and didn't bother to read into it. Knew about Chilton & The Box Tops years ago. Was at a friend's party on NYE and he was blasting the 2-fer of the first 2 LP's. Amazing shite. How can one NOT be hip to them. I ordered one off amazon the minute I got home from his party- hope it hits my doorstep in the next day or so. Full review forthcoming!

The Music Machine/Bonniwell Music Machine. Original Sound & Warner Bros LP's. The later available thru Sundazed. I'm sure those sounds might be a bit intense depending on the mood you're in. Definitely not for a mellow mood. Highly playful, however. Wonder what these sounds might be like under the influence? High, HIGH praise for Sean Bonniwell !!

Smiley Smile rocks and the only people here who get it are me, Ian, Luther, and Chris D.
No way man! Gotta and me to the list. I ain't been active in this thread, but I'd put SMiLEy in my top 3, ONLY because I can't decide which I like better- SMiLEy, Sunflower or Pet Sounds. All induviduals onto themselves and to one another. DON'T make me have to choose! It's just not possible.

Do you really like the Syd Barrett period of the Floyd?
Moi? or mygfisinme? I haven't heard that much- like some of what I've heard, tho. I think I posted a great story last spring on the old, old board, about my mailman and his LSD experience at a Floyd show. Yes? No? It's a great story! If no- LET ME KNOW- I'll post here- perfect place!
