401  Smiley Smile Stuff / 1980's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Keepin' The Summer Alive on: October 16, 2013, 12:43:14 AM
Hey this is not that bad of an album. Not highly artistic or classic in any way, but it's fun to listen.
First side is better than the second, because it doesn't have any ultimate crap songs.

Keepin' The Summer Alive 4/5
Why wasn't this a single release!? Okay lyrics are a bit silly but so what, pretty much every Beach boys song or Beach boys single has a bit silly lyrics.
That's one of the reasons they are so good.

Oh Darlin' 3/5
I like it.

Some Of Your Love 3/5
Like it, sounds pretty modern in some weird way actually.

Livin' With A Heartache 3/5
Like this too. Country is great and Beach boys is great, so what's not to like.

School Days 2/5
Lousy cover, why did they put this here? End the A-side with Sunshine and that would've been pretty perfect run of fun songs.
I skip this pretty much always.

Goin' On 4/5
Awesome! Almost a classic. Or maybe it is.

Sunshine 4/5
Same here as with Goin' On. I dig every part of this.

When Girls Get Together 2/5
Super bad song! Why was this ever released, don't understand. One of the worst Beach boys songs ever. Extremely boring and irritating.
Can't understand why so many people like this.

Santa Ana Winds 3/5
Nice little song, I like Al's voice, as always.

Endless Harmony 1/5
Ultimate crap! What were they thinking really? Luckily it's the last song of the album so it's easy to skip. Just take the record away
after Santa Ana Winds. Or actually after Sunshine if you wanna end on a high note.

So for the album 3/5. Could've been so much better, but it's still listenable except those couple songs. That's not so bad at all.
The lack of Dennis is maybe the biggest reason why this album fails in so many places. They should've replaced School days, When girls get together and
Endless Harmony with Goin' to the beach and whatever else they had in their pockets that time... Pretty much anything is better than those three songs.
402  Smiley Smile Stuff / 21st Century Beach Boys Albums / Re: That's Why God Made The Radio on: October 16, 2013, 12:19:50 AM
My first Beach boys album I ever heard completely from beginning to end, yes that's right.

Think About the Days: 4/5
What an awesome opener! And because of this little piece and Summer's gone's fade, this album can be listened over and over again (CD).
It just flows in perfectly.

TWGMTR: 3.5/5
Great song, but a bit too mediocre. I don't understand why they choosed this as the first single, that should've been Isn't it time instead.

Isn't it Time: 4/5
One of the best upbeat songs in years from anyone! I only wish Brian had little bit more parts, he sounds so great in the beginning of the song.

Spring Vacation: 3/5
Not as bad as some people claim. Corny lyrics maybe, but it's still a fun song. Fits perfectly to the context of the album.

TPLoB&S: 2.5/5
The weakest track, I like the music but the lyrics are out of place. Doesn't fit on this album at all. Vocals are great though, and the harmonies!
This is the Johnny Carson of TWGMTR.

Shelter: 3/5
I really do dig this song, but I just wish it had been recorded and produced in a very different way. Jeff sings well, but he just doesn't have
much "soul or heart" in his singing. Doesn't do anything for me. I wish someone else would've taken the lead. Like for example Bruce maybe?

Daybreak Over The Ocean: 3.5/5
People bash this pretty much only because it's the only Mike Love track. It's actually one of the best songs he has ever written, and a great love song.
I love the instrumental break with those spanish guitars, and the drum that kicks in at the fade. Great vocals too, except the last "because I lo-o-o-ve you"
is cheesy...

Beaches in Mind: 3/5
Pretty much same thing here as with the Spring vacation. It's actually really fun song and if it had a little faster tempo and more hard rockin' style,
it could've been a hit. But this version that we have, well it's not bad but it could have been million times better.

Strange World: 3.5/5
Really interesting and has a different sound than anything else the beach boys have ever recorded. But it doesn't really work much on its own, it's pretty good
introducction to the life suite though. I like the bell ring sound and again Brian's vocals.

From There to Back Again: 5/5
Perfect! Really moving from start to finish. These last three songs are as good as anything from Pet Sounds, Smile, or yeah anything.

Pacific Coast Highway: 5/5

Summer's Gone: 5/5
Maybe my favorite Beach boys song ever, just perfect. The last lines and the sound effects of rain and wind chimes are chilling. wow.

So I rate the album 4, it's not perfect but it's close to that. I have listened it at least 300 times, and it still sounds as great as it did the first time I
heard it. One of the best Beach boys albums ever, and I'm sure people will appreciate it even more after some time.
403  Smiley Smile Stuff / Welcome to the Smiley Smile board / Hi all! on: October 15, 2013, 11:28:40 PM
Hi,

I've been following this board over a year now. I really like the stuff here and enjoy the knowledge people have.
But anyway I'm from Finland (sorry for my bad language skills) and I'm 20 years old. Beach boys ain't a big deal here and never has been.
My knowledge of them before 2011 was really minimum. I knew some of the hit songs like I get around, Wouldn't it be nice and Good vibrations
and always loved all of them. But Beach boys has never had any kind of media attention here, or radio play. Then I heard Surfin' safari on my
vacation in Miami. I didn't know what band or song that was, but I got really weird vibes (in a good way weird) from that. When I got home and
googled the parts of the lyrics that I could remember, I was really surprised that it was a Beach boys song.

Well anyway I downloaded some hits collection cd with all the old car and
surf songs and listened that the whole summer. Nobody else liked it but I did. Still I didn't take a look at the other, (better stuff) they had
done. I thought that that one hit compilation had all the good songs they ever made and rest is crap. That's because I was an idiot and
believed everything what internet told me.

Then came That's why god made the radio and 50th anniversary tour. My first impression before hearing anything from the new album was that it
has to be crap. Then I heard the title track on youtube and I actually liked it. It wasn't as good as the old ones but it had something
really interesting in it. After that I listened to Summer's gone, and wow I was blown away by it. I wasn't expecting anything like that. All
the tracks were in youtube at the time already but I decided not to listen any of them until I have the actual CD. I immediately drove to nearest store
which had it and was so excited to play it in my car. And wow! Isn't it time was immediately my favorite song, I liked it lot more that the title
track. And then the last 3 songs, just pure awesomness.

And that got me into the deeper stuff, I listened to Pet Sounds which I loved, but I liked even more the Smile stuff, and bought the smile
sessions box set. Then it all went crazy, I had to get all the albums on vinyl, even though I hadn't ever even owned a vinyl player. And I read
everything I could find about the band and Brian Wilson and watched every video I could find about them. Oh and I even fly to London see them
play at Wembley last year. That was propably the best night of my life. Now I have pretty much all of their albums and releases, some even in
multiple copies.

Long story but I told it as short as I could :D This thing that has like infected me to the Beach boys is really weird, my parents haven't
ever listened them, nobody has really liked them, and then just suddenly I'm here and all the people around me thinks I've gone crazy
because of this obsession. But I already have managed to get some people dig Beach boys too, not as much as I do but still a little bit.
Now I'm listening to them everyday. It doesn't matter what my mood is, there's always the right Beach boys album for every day.
