I assumed it was a fake name but haven't watched that so I didn't recognize. Fake name doesn't necessarily equal fake person... I mean, look at your screen names. And yet, you exist.

Can you remove my email from your quote GDC? Thanks.

Changing "city" to "shitty" in H&V is so idiotic I feel personally insulted. Pure garbage.

yes.  what the f***!!!  other than that, H&V wasn't as bad as y'all made out, some interesting moments.  cantina section is out of place on a smiley smile version though, duhhh.

Vegetables - that half feel backbeat sucks.  really.

Fall breaks - This rocks. No complaints Smiley Smiley throwing up the  Evil horns.

She's going bald - interesting, but shitty. not that the original was a masterpiece.  torn between my desires for something good, and something interesting (see below)

Little pad - as others have said, too much reverb, but enjoyable cover.  indie easy listening.  not interesting tho.

GV - apart from that bendy guitar in the chorus, nice cover!  easy to listen to.  not super interesting. kudos to accurate tamborining.  actually the bendy guitar is growing on me by the end.

with me tonight - too much reverb, shady lead vocal (sounds like on purpose :$) another friggin half feel beat.  i hate that.  nice background vox on this one though!

wind chimes - excellent, i was expecting a bit more variation from the original though given the comments here.

gettin hungry - synths, beat, chorus section are great. could do without those ultra-indie verses, yuck.  when i heard the drum fill at the end, i was afraid the beat was gonna come in... HALF FEEL... but thank god it came in rockin.  very nice!

wonderful - not my favorite vocal, but i really like the arrangement and production!!  <3 my favorite

whistle in - more or less what i hoped for, coming from portland.  they sure love their half feel beats... its appropriate here.

Overall well worth the listen.  Easily the worst part is when the guy says "shitty" at the very beginning.  WHYYYY

I would hate to live in a world that didn't have California Girls, I mean those opening chords are the best ever, but ...

Let Him Run Wild pulls on my heartstrings every time.  LHRW FTW

Wow!  That was epic.  The next song on your soundcloud is more to my taste though.. very strong playing!  I assume you are the arranger/bassist, from your picture?  Or have you multitracked all this?

Times they are a changin'.  Not a bad performance but its just not Party!-appropriate.

Then I kissed her.  I hate hearing those lyrics turned around, it sounds so smug.

I never got into these guys before.  But man are they good!  Thanks for bringing it up!  I absolutely love "When Love Breaks Down".  Perfect pop song.

23  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Lack of melody in modern music on: October 22, 2013, 07:33:31 AM
Perhaps it is becoming increasingly frustrating to craft 'original' melodies so many years into recorded music, and thus the 'art musician' prefers exploration of rhythm, sonic texture, space... (see electronic music).

I agree with others that perfect fourths and fifths have nothing to do with taste, its about equal temperment tuning.

There are plenty examples of melody-oriented music both on the radio and in the indie record store, including Katy Perry (Teenage Dream and Firework have excellent melodies, albeit repetetive, as the form dictates)  Ariel Pink has wild 'art' melodies and others that are pure pop, within the same song often.  Kanye West has penned some wicked melodies, and aptly recontextualized many more.

Overall, I think you find what you expect to find.  (Confirmation bias)  Of course this applies to all of us.  Probably best to ignore the music you don't like, but revisit it every once in a while with an open mind.  You may be surprised how your tastes change, if you allow them to.
24  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What would you consider to be the worst song of all-time? on: October 21, 2013, 05:12:41 PM

I knew someone would post Friday eventually, but I'd never seen this one and laughed all the way through until I couldn't take anymore.

Still, it can't be the worst song because it's not catchy enough.  That's where Friday has it beat.  Pure ear worm.
25  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What is the most depressing album you've ever heard? on: October 21, 2013, 05:03:56 PM
"From the Basement On a Hill" by Elliott Smith, what a terribly lost soul but so incredibly talented, some of my favorite songs of his are on this posthumous album but these are definitely his bleakest and most depressing songs lyrically and that's saying a lot when it comes to Smith.  Today is actually the tenth anniversary of his death, poor guy.  Certainly one of the best songwriters of his generation.  Cry

this one came to my mind immediately as well..  good suggestions so far, i'll add a few
