76  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: I hate the Beatles on: January 02, 2009, 04:49:58 PM

I like the Beatles music but I really don 't listen to it that often. It's just not my favorite music.

I can't stand to listen to any of their songs more than a few times, as opposed to bands I really like (Cream, The Who, Rolling Stones, Paul Butterfield, Beach Boys) whose music is a daily part of my life.

The Beatles music, to my ears, sounds cloying and kind of boring. Not very dynamic. Maybe because they're mediocre at playing their instruments (Ringo excluded, who I think is one of the best drummers in the world)

I don't hate them, but the Beatles don't do it for me. The Beach Boys do it for me, but that doesn't mean they are "better" than the Beatles. I don't really care who is better.

It would be technically possible to have a rhythm section to sound like Keith and John and essentially recapture the original sound (minus the youthfull energy of course)

How would that be technically possible?
78  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Highway 61 Revisited - What songs did Mike Bloomfield play on? on: January 02, 2009, 04:38:07 PM

Besides "Tombstone Blues", which is the song where Mike Bloomfield is most prominently featured, what other songs on Highway 61 Revisited did Bloomfield play on?

thanks!

The most recent post on that thread was almost 3 months ago. I couldn't even find it and it ain't that long.

Let's start fresh for the new year.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - 1st album

Let It Bleed - The Rolling Stones

They played with a lot of energy. I was especially moved by the encore of Tommy songs near the end of the show.

Unfortunately it hit me for the first time that this is not really the Who. Pete spoke a little in between songs and mentioned that what he and Roger were trying to do is EVOKE not EMULATE the music of the Who. Emulate means 'to copy' which is not what the point of the concert was. They are trying to capture the spirit of something they created a long time ago, but its still not the real thing.  Cry

I'm a pretty big Mike Love apologist, but most people don't know the lyrics to Good Vibrations.

 Huh
83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sgt. Pepper blew his mind? on: December 22, 2008, 11:13:53 PM
I dont know if I agree. I dont think Mike is bad, but I dont know if he could have come up with something like IJWMFTT.  Listen to him laughing at the words to Hang on to Your Ego. He simply couldnt conceive of where rock was going, he had rocknroll and beach boys music in a little box. He still does. He cant think outside of the early sixties box that he helped create.

As I say, take a look at some of Mike's lyrics throughout the 60s (not so much the really early stuff but mostly from '64 onwards) and 70s and do you admit that pretty much all of his lyrics fit the songs really well? So who's to say he couldn't have written introspective lyrics like on Pet Sounds? He was writing some introspective lyrics on Today! anyway.... but yeah of course I doubt he could've written good lyrics for SMiLE (on the whole anyway), but I can imagine Pet Sounds.

I've got to tell you that I think Good Vibrations is one of the greatest pop songs in history and a lot of it has to do with Mike Love's lyrics, which he wrote by himself. I also feel that the lyrics to Good Vibrations are better than any of the lyrics Van Dyke Parks came up with for Smile EXCLUDING Surf's Up. The lyrics to Good Vibrations and Surf's Up are equally powerful.

Let's face it. The only way we're going to hear what we want is when all the band members are dead.
85  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Big Star on: November 10, 2008, 09:39:11 PM
Don't like 'em.

I find myself disappointed with most power pop that claims to be influenced by my favorite bands from the 60's. Some catchy tunes but they always lose me. Probably because the songs are so cloying.

One power pop band I like is Cheap Trick and their cover of 'In The Street' rules.

Amazing!

They played 'Love Reign O'er Me' and Roger nailed it. They also played an overlooked song from Who's Next that's one of my favorites, 'Getting in Tune'.

Roger's voice really hasn't changed much. I guess he didn't smoke and abuse himself too much.
87  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / I saw the Who last night on: November 10, 2008, 07:14:46 PM
I saw Roger and Pete at the Nokia theater in Los Angeles. It was a great show, really powerful stuff.

Just one problem. I don't like the guy who plays bass, he really blew on the bass solo for My Generation. I really don't know why they've kept him this long. This is the third time I've seen them. The first time I saw them, John Entwistle was on bass.
88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / I Was Made To Lover Her - question about Wild Honey song on: November 01, 2008, 08:33:36 PM

I know this is something that has been brought up before around here, but I don't remember what the explanation is.

On the Wild Honey album a verse from the original Stevie Wonder song is not included, the part with the killer bass line that begins 'All Through Thick And Thin, Our Love Just Won't End..."

I just figured they decided not to perform that part for their own reasons. Then I heard the cd from the early 80's album Rarities which has 'I Was Made To Love Her' from the  Wild Honey album and included the missing section of the song as a tag. So they did record that section of the song! Now, why didn't they release the entire song with all the verses back in 1967? It would of made the song a lot more awesome.

Watch what you say about Brian here dude. The book said he had a threesome with HIS WIFE and Tandyn Almer, which may not be true. It didn't say anything about them being a homosexual couple. And Dr. Landy was a surrogate father to Brian, not a boyfriend.

I had no idea such a happy upbeat record like Sunflower could a be a vortex for so much hate and shame.
91  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Classic Albums: The Doors on: October 10, 2008, 09:03:23 PM
I have all the versions of Pet Sounds on cd and the best version is the DCC. The 40th Anniversary mono mix sounds better than the 1996/1999 mono mix, but still sounds processed and like its coming out of a tin can. The warmth ain't there.
92  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: Beach Boys t-shirts on: October 06, 2008, 12:54:21 AM
Are you going to have to those shirts made? 'Cause I really want to buy one. Only don't go to Cafe Press to have them made. I once bought a shirt with a logo silk screened on from them and it was peeling off and the shirt was really uncomfortable.

Does this album cover intrigue you?

94  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Classic Albums: The Doors on: September 30, 2008, 08:52:41 AM
I don't think you could do a show on Pet Sounds, because that album has been talked about to death.

On a couple of other BB/BW-related message boards, a guy named Ebb has done a series of videos for the Pet Sounds' songs called Behind The Sounds. Have you seen it Heywood? It's quite impressive. He plays the sessions for a particular song, and as the instruments are playing, he displays pictures of the actual Wrecking Crew musician who is playing the part. The timing is perfect. He also uses captions over the pictures detailing the name of the musician and other interesting details. It's not only educational, it's very entertaining.

If somebody could incorporate something like that into a Pet Sounds' documentary - and the people at Classic Albums are certainly capable of it - you might come up with something worthwhile.

That sounds great. Is it on YouTube?

OTHER SINGERS:
Besides, do you really need to hear Brian sing every single word of "Add Some Music"? I'd much rather have different band members take turns, like on the original version. And does Brian need to sing every verse of "Sloop John B" and "I Know There's An Answer"?

I sure as hell do. If Brian wants my dough, he better sing every f##king word.
98  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Poor crowd at TLOS USA Premier on: September 17, 2008, 11:27:51 PM
I'm sorry...as great of a vocalist as Jeff is, when I go to a Brian show, I want Brian to be singing lead.

Right, 'cause Brian's got a such a great voice.  Roll Eyes
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian meets Zooey Deschanel on: September 14, 2008, 04:35:17 PM

I liked it. I guess Brian figures he's too old to go on a date with her, but I thought we would have been more friendly to her. To me he seemed to be doing the same thing he does in every interview.

Just bought 'Papa' John Phillips' "Jack Of Diamonds", which came out last year.

I have all his other solo albums ("John The Wolfking Of L.A.", "Pay Pack & Follow" and "Phillips 66"), as well as the Mamas & Papas catalogue, so I decided to get this one too.

A troubled soul, but an ace songwriter.  Thumbs Up

I thought John Phillips only released one solo album, 'Wolf King of LA' in 1970 and then dropped out. When did he make these other records?
