126  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / What is G I 3 ? on: April 23, 2008, 05:18:08 PM
One of the lines at the beginning of 'Live With Me' by the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger sings that he takes G I 3?  What the hell is that?
127  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bob Dylan Thread on: April 20, 2008, 08:25:21 PM
Just started listening to Dylan over the past couple of months. I bought my first two Dylan albums: Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde

I figured, since those are considered his best albums, I'd start there. I like that he's playing with a full band. I never really bought his stuff because I don't like folk music even though I love the Byrds, especially their versions of his folk songs.

Led Zeppelin 3 & 4

CATCH A WAVE

Being American and listening to oldies radio as a child I was always aware of the Beach Boys music. One day when I was a bit older, I heard 'Catch A Wave' on the radio and was really blown away by it, the production and especially Brian's falsetto on the song. It took me places music had never taken me before.

I just wanted to add that the Butterfield band's version of 'Mary, Mary' is equal to, if not superior to, 'Gloria' by Van Morrison & Them

Right on.

Mikee is lucky that he actually got to see them at the peak of their powers, they were still pretty good after Mike Bloomfield left.

It's too bad they're not better known. I guess that's 'cause they didn't have any hit singles, but 'Mary, Mary' is probably the most commercial of their recordings and should have been a big hit. 'Mary, Mary' was actually written by Mike Nesmith and later recorded by the Monkees. It was on their second album 'More of the Monkees'.

Beach Boys music will not be forgotten and this board will be around in one form or another.

I've been listening to Highway 61, but I haven't bought Supersession yet. Electric Flag is on my list of bands to listen to this year.  Over the past year I've discovered Chicago blues, and blues rock in general. Bloomfield's guitar licks on Tombstone Blues are pretty damn good but so far my favorite songs, on the Highway 61 album, are are 'From a Buick 6' and 'Highway 61 Revisited'.

What songs are going to be on this comp?

Track list, anyone?
135  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Anyone here love the Paul Butterfield Blues Band? on: April 05, 2008, 07:16:31 PM
For the past couple of months I've been listening to the first self titled album and their second record 'East West'. They are so Gosh Darn good, the whole band is amazing and Mike Bloomfield is the best guitarist ever.

Well said.
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Be My Baby or Good Vibrations on: April 03, 2008, 08:59:30 PM
Well, they are considered the greatest singles of all time.  And I prefer Be My Baby over Don't Worry Baby.

'At My Window' like 'In The Back of My Mind' is a paranoid schizophrenic song, especially when the strings build up and we hear Al sing 'He Came To My Window...(and then Brian JUMPS IN REPEATING) HE CAME TO MY WINDOW followed by the whole group singing HE CAME TO MY WINDOW and then 'FROM THEIR EYES' and a discordant piano and then the tag of 'Fly Away'. Beautiful creepy stuff. And a catchy tune.

Yeah, but most of us are Spector fans too. I know I am.

And Brian should get a nickel for every actress Phil shot because "River Deep, Mountain High" was no "Good Vibrations".

Amen, brother.

Are these going to be remastered? 'Cause I really like the sound of the remastered songs on Warmth of the Sun, especially some of the Sunflower and Surf's Up tracks and 'Little Girl I Once Knew'.

I agree with you guys in the 'half is good and half is not so good' theory. But I got to tell you, songs like Deirdre, Tears In The Morning and Got to Know The Woman (shudder) are not only bad songs, the production is completely different then This Whole World, Slip On Through (I love that song) etc., to the point where they don't sound like "Sunflower" songs when people discuss the SOUND of Sunflower. They really are filler and not part of a cohesive piece of art.

By the way, I consider 'Cool Cool Water' to be the equal of 'This Whole World' and 'All I Wanna Do'. I haven't noticed anyone bashing it yet. The production is awesome on that song and its great to finally hear Brian's voice.

Top 10 Albums according to Rolling Stone:

1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles (1967)
2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys (16 May 1966)
3. Revolver, The Beatles (1966)
4. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan (1965)
5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles (1965)
6. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye (1971)
7. Exile on Main St., Rolling Stones (1972)
8. London Calling, The Clash (1979)
9. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan (1966)
10. The Beatles (The White Album), The Beatles (1968)

It's total bullmerda that out of the TOP 10 OF ALL TIME,  4 are Beatles albums. One album would of represented them just fine. Who's number one really doesn't matter, but the fact that Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols or The Who didn't make it anywhere near the top 10 is ridiculous.

There are a lot of bands that are just as influential as the Beatles. I know the Beatles sold more records than anyone, but that doesn't make them the best. And you know what, you may like the Beatles but THEY ARE NOT THE BEST. Again, quality of songwriting is totally subjective, but isn't Live At Leeds an amazing record, isn't it great that a band could be that powerful live. The Beatles never did anything like that.

I read some interview where Johnny Ramone discussed how influenced he was by Good Times Bad Times, particularly the downward strokes on Jimmy Page's guitar that opened the song. Johnny Ramone said that became the basis for HIS style which of course ended up influencing all of punk.

The Beatles get credit for everything, but its funny how no one can ever explain WHY Sgt. Pepper is the greatest album of all time. It's like people can't think for themselves and just repeat the same BS over and over. Whenever the breakthroughs of the album are discussed, the fact is they incorporated things that had already been done before and would be done better.

Rolling Stone had this amazing opportunity to shine a light on albums and bands that never got any recognition or record sales and instead they just toe the line and kiss the Beatles asses. Shame, a damn shame.

I hate Jan Wenner, he's the evil bastard that keeps the Monkees out of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.

Was your first Beach Boys tattoo the one with the sun and the 'God Only Knows' notes?

Has Brian ever commented about how he felt about Spector's music going out of style and his career pretty much ending in 1966? I mean if Spector was truly superior to Brian he should have been able to adapt to the changing times and keep making great music. I'm a fan of Spector's later work but 'River Deep Mountain High' was the end of the party.

I don't like the stereo mix because it sounds really sterile and processed. It loses the warmth and texture. You also lose the Wall of Sound that Brian was going for. Pet Sounds is supposed to sound like a Righteous Brothers record.
