Will be listening in my new Honda Civic with its 12-speaker Bose centerpoint surround system.
I heard it. it sounds nicely spacious and I hear elements in my rear speakers, but I'm not sure of I'm hearing it the way it's supposed to be heard.

Great question and difficult to answer.

Two vocal performances that are really on another level include
Wouldn’t It Be Nice
Breakaway
Totally agree about both.

A performance by the Fendertones would have been great. Are they still performing?

Great pix!
David always looks ultra-cool.

I hope they publish sessionographies for everything else.

That's cool!

I certainly heard it enough times in stores when I was recently in Florida.

Howie, I am of the opinion that Dennis's instrumental Mexico is absolutely perfect for a movie or TV show.

Two thoughts so far:
1. Nice version by Al of Tell Laura I Love Her on The Road Not Taken. Also nice version of that song by Bob Dylan on Hurricane.
2. They should have released the version of Make It Good without strings on Disc 1 on CATP.

Just listened so far to the Sail On Sailor writing session. Love the return of Brian's scrappy rhythm and blues voice. His speaking voice is heading towards how it will sound on the spoken intro of the 1975 In the Back Of My Mind.

Still Dec. 2 on Amazon.ca.

Nov. 18th
Just got an email from the Beach Boys organization saying the release date is now Dec. 2
Is this for a physical release? Because the streaming release is still listed as November 18.
Here's what the Beach Boys notification says:
Hold on, dear brother that box set you’ve been waiting for now arrives December 2.

Sail On Sailor - 1972

A new expansive multi-disc and digital box set, highlighting 1972's Carl and the Passions – "So Tough" and 1973's Holland albums with a bounty of unreleased outtakes, live recordings, demos, alternate versions and mixes, instrumentals, and a cappella tracks.

Some highlights include a Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairytale) EP (not available on vinyl since its original release) and Carnegie Hall Thanksgiving 1972 concert recording. The Carnegie Hall concert is the first-ever release of a complete Beach Boys concert from this era with its original setlist. Sail On Sailor also includes a beautifully-designed, booklet with liner notes, rare photos of the band, recording artifacts, and more.

For what it's worth, in this interview from 1995 (about 2:55 into the interview), Brian himself states he ruined his voice with cigarettes.

At points in this interview he sounds reminiscent of his younger self.
To me, Brian sounded like his 1964 self in the opening seconds of his interview with me, when he said, "hello, Joel."

Wow, everything that one could hope for! One small omission, unless I missed it, the single mix of Cuddle Up, unless it's the listed alternate mix. And of course, there's the songwriting session of Sail On Sailor... Cheesy

Happy 80th b-day to Alan!

Al Jardine's 80th Birthday Video from Family & Friends:

And there's also "80 Cool Things About Al Jardine":

They should have included Al's magnificent singing on the chorus of Break Away. #81!

On the studio talk intro to In the Back Of My Mind, Brian's speaking voice sounds like that of Burton Cummings of The Guess Who. The phrasing is also different from what we're used to.

Regarding Al's voice, I watched a few videos shot this month. Al seems fine on Sloop John B, but he seems to struggle with Help Me Rhonda. Hope that's temporary.

Just finished the book. Superb. Never saw so many intros and codas in a book, but as David writes, he kind of didn't want the book to end.

Got the book via Kindle a few days ago, and I'm on the chapter covering the post-Smile era in the late 1960s. Superb read.

Nowadays we have headphones that can simulate 5.1 3D surround. And as I said in a previous post, such technology is dominating the headphone market right now (and will continue to do so).
I'm waiting for affordable headphones that replicate the sound of a home theater space the way Virtual Reality replicates a large visual space. In the meantime, can Beach Boys songs get a binaural mix to produce a nice surround effect in headphones?
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: June 18, 2022, 08:52:59 PM
I would love it if everything was mixed to mono under Brian's strict supervision.

That magnificent picture of Carl and Dennis on the second to last page of the liners is oh so cool.

I second the love for the Smile tracks in stereo, and I do very much like many of the radically different mixes, although I wish parts of Marcella were not buried.
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sounds of Summer 6LP Announced on: June 17, 2022, 03:45:13 PM
Just listened in my car via Apple Music so far, but I agree with the love for the Baby Blue mix. It's so detailed and orchestral I almost thought the Royal Philharmonic was accompanying here too. Funniest thing- I listened to the first 30 tracks in Dolby Atmos in my car, except that my 2020 Honda Civic is equipped with seven speakers and DTS Neural virtual surround, so I would guess I'm getting a different sound than what I should be hearing, but albums like Abbey Road, Elton John's Diamonds set, Queen's song Another One Bites the Dust and some others sound fantastic and very immersive. For the SoS Dolby Atmos->DTS Neural songs, the best sounding ones are the Pet Sounds tracks. In fact, a lot of the tracks from 31 to 80 in stereo produce nicer virtual surround effects and sound better overall than the Atmos ones
But the most interesting Dolby Atmos->DTS Neural tracks is Be True To Your School, which is of course mono on the CD. But in my car, it provides the biggest surround spread of all the tracks, in good old fashioned muddy, smeary near-Duophonic! it almost brought tears of nostalgia to my eyes.
