Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1968 Copyright Extension prediction thread

I'm getting the feeling that we ain't getting a physical release of any unreleased 1968 material this year. The summer was taken over by the useless orchestral disc and it's getting a little late for the classic fall release that would usually come in like October or November. So unless we hear some news soon, I'd assume we will only be getting a December copyright dump in digital only format. Which I admit I wouldn't be heartbroken over, as it's the music that matters to me, but I wouldn't mind that if the stuff gets released, it gets an actual physical release.
How about a December copyright dump in digital-only format, followed up next year with a multi-CD release of 1968 and 1969 recordings together, excluding material that should/could add to an expanded Sunflower recording in 2020?

Mr Desper,
If I could bend your ear for a moment. On a facebook page a fan has proudly received an acetate (british) of Dennis Wilson and Rumbo's Falling in Love/Sounds of Free. on said acetate, it refers to "Sounds of Free" as being "Settle Down" ( written on the acetate and then crossed off) Do you remember if Settle Down was a different song from Sounds of Free? or is this just an alternate title?
thanks finding this interesting doc smiley

If this and the other 2 Mike Love songs from that soundtrack (Crusin' and Sad Sad Summer) had been added to MIU, it would have made MIU a better (dare I say it, more successful sales wise) seller than it was... the three songs stick to the nostalgia formula and would have been more appealing to the "Endless Summer" fans, at least those who would be willing to buy a nostalgia recording after the not to great 15 big ones.
1. "Almost Summer" 2. "She's Got Rhythm" 3. "Come Go with Me" 4. "Wontcha Come Out Tonight" 5. "Sad Sad Summer" 6. "Pitter Patter" 7. "My Diane" side 2 1. "Peggy Sue" 2. "Cruisin" 3. "Sweet Sunday Kinda Love" 4. "Belles of Paris" 5. "Kona Coast" 6. "Match Point of Our Love" 7. "Winds of Change"
"Hey Little Tomboy" relegated to a B side

Mike hasn't shown any motivation, and reissue labels haven't shown any interest, in even reissuing the "Looking Back with Love" album, so I doubt we're likely to see full-album release of "First Love" and "Country Love."
I would doubt they'd sell 100 copies of a "Mike Love - Country Love" CD at every concert, but more importantly, there may be some restrictions in the license granted by BRI in terms of what merchandise Mike can actually sell at merch stands. He may not be able to regularly sell physical copies of solo music. (Yes, Al sold his solo CD at C50 shows; but I'm guessing that was one of pathetically very few concessions given to Al on that tour. Plus, C50 was not done under the auspices of a BRI licensing agreement anyway).
Not to be argumentative, but I disagree with almost everything in your response... First Love or any release other than Country Love, (truly terrible from what I've heard) would move copies if not over priced.. as for BRI licence, Al's solo CD shows that it is possible... $30 for a bloody ball cap... give me the $15 CD please... and may I suggest, If they did this, make the cd case one of those cardboard sleeves (not jewelbox) where it has a spot for your ticket stub... aww the memories

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Will there ever be a Jan and Dean box set?

<<I'd be happy with... you know, like real stereo?>>
All of Jan's productions were mixed in "real stereo" back in the day. The mono mixes were done first but he personally supervised and directed the stereo mixes for every single and album up until the accident. No need for "new" stereo mixes to be created.
Guess I'm corrected... sadly most of my J&D is mono...

it's one of Dennis Wilson's best songs, absolutely amazing and stunning, it's a crime that it took this long to get a release, it should have been released in 1993 on the Good Vibrations set. Dennis also has another very pretty song still in the vaults called Behold The Night which absolutely needs to come out and also Carry Me Home
OK OK as no one else has followed up on this... how about "Behold The Night" care to talk about this one... never heard it, know it was supposed to be on Dennis' 1971 solo LP that never happened.. never heard anyone talk about before... Details man, Details!!

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Jan and Dean's Carnival of Sound-I'm confused
The Columbia version of "Yellow Balloon" had been re-recorded with a better arrangement. The rest of the album was tweaked and re-mixed for stereo. Both the mono and stereo versions were released on the Sundazed compilation in 1996. The original stereo versions of what appeared on that disc would have been what Columbia released if Dean had accepted the counter proposal from Jan's attorneys and Screen Gems.
sadly not entirely true... missing from the Sundazed compilation was the stereo version of "Like A Summer Rain", so if you wanted to put together your own stereo version of the lp, you couldn't. If anyone has a copy of this track in stereo, I'd appreciate a PM

working with this a little more we could do this, moving Happy Endings (soundtrack song) in with Still Surfin tracks and adding a few known alternate versions it could look like this:
Disc 1. (tracks 1-12 are the original album remixed with bonus tracks from the 80's filling out the disc.) 1. Getcha Back 2. It's getting late 3. Crack at your love 4. Maybe I don't know 5. She Believes In Love Again 6. California Calling. 7. Passing Friend 8. I'm so lonely 9. Where I Belong 10. I Do Love you 11. It's just a matter of time 12. Male Ego 13. At the hop 14. California Dreamin' ( Made in the usa version) 15. Rock n Roll to the rescue 16. East Meets West (with the four seasons) 17. Don't Worry Baby ( with the Everly Brothers) 18. Runaway (live) 19. Rockin' All Over The World (live)
Disc 2 (Still Surfin' plus bonus)) 1. Kokomo 2. Somewhere near Japan 3. Island Girl 4. Chasin the sky 5. Still cruisin 6. It's a beautiful Day 7. In My Car 8. Make it big 9. Wipe Out (with the fat boys) 10. Happy Endings (With Little Richard) 11. The Spirit of Rock n Roll (Live version) 12. Buzz Buzz Buzz (live) 13. Country Pie (live) 14. It's just a matter of time (live with Dennis) 15. Make It Big (alternate Version) 16. Somewhere near Japan (single Edit) + a few other live tracks that fit this time period (NOT Imagine)

like the idea in general but what you have here has too much fat... 2 cd's (drop the KTSA tracks, as that CD is really thought of as a 70's release anyways) disc 1 is a remixed '85 with about 15 minutes of extra tracks to up it to a hour of music, disc 2 is Still Crusin' minus the 60's tracks with most of the rest of these tracks you mentioned added .. get it up to about 60 minutes as well.. Good packaging, with Island Girl as the radio push song... and away you go... Happy Endings (With Little Richard) Disc 2 (Still Surfin' plus bonus)) 1. Kokomo 2. The Spirit of Rock n Roll (Live version) 12. Buzz Buzz Buzz (live) 13. Country Pie (live) 14. It's just a matter of time (live with Dennis) 15, Rockin All Over The World (live) + a few other live tracks that fit this time period (NOT Imagine)

I think that the only "Holy Grail" recordings that haven't seen the light of day remaining are: The late 60's recordings done for A&M by Brian with Tandyn Almer. Rerecordings of Beach Boy songs with alternate lyrics, to make them less surf and car oriented and therefore easier for a publisher to offer for other artists to record. Were they any good? does anyone know? that might be the last bastion of musical surprise that could see the light of day someday.
