326  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The final aborted Beach Boy's album on: December 05, 2007, 08:35:49 AM
Stars and Stripes suffered the most from being the opposite of what the band really needed at the time...

If they had put together a cd of country rock songs by other artists... ( letting those artists perform the music) with solid Beach Boy lead and backing vocals.. then the band may have had some success on the charts and some sales....

sort of like "Wilson Phillips - California"  cd but many years earlier.. (a different time (96)  it might have worked...)

could you imagine the Eagle's 'Tequila Sunrise' or REM's 'Don't go back to Rockville' ( this song would sound great with a  M. Love  lead.......... )

who knows???  Roll Eyes

 Sad Sad

Silly question time Alan....

Beach Boys Central    is this idea and website dead?  or is it still plodding along towards..hmmm maybe summer '08?

an update... even a grey prediction would be appreciated.

silly sounding... and just a bit to much like Brian's early 80's Landy like material....

again  your opinion can vary.. its just imho

having just recently heard the Birmingham show from the 24th of September.. it really makes me look forward to the studio version.... in the week between that show and its debut.. there is a noticeable change in some of the arranging, backing vocals and such showing that it really is still a work in progress....

sadly, the only track that still leaves me real cold is "Oxygen to the Brain"... ecck (IMHO)
330  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Great song - coulda been better! on: October 21, 2007, 01:36:58 AM
"It's Ok" - petters out too early.  Would have been a bigger hit fleshed out to a longer tune.

How about a proper beginning? That fault is the only reason this wasn't a much bigger hit...

also "Getcha Back" decent song... horrible vocal from Mike... should have been redone... don't know what Steve Levine was thinking there...

sounds pretty good to me for a demo.... ( I read that all TLOS recorded material is demos)  and that Brian and the band will finish(redo) them if the material is deamed sucessful live this month... ala Smile.. live first , finished recording second...

Vocals bad?Huh  he sounds pretty darn good here to me....  I'd rather have a full band singing backgrounds.. but again  this is just a demo so.... hey... it needs a little editing perhaps and maybe slightly fuller instrumentation.. but all in all  good Brian...   by the numbers... yeah maybe.. but it would have been a key track on GIOMH based on the effort shown here..

332  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: That Lucky Old Sun - bit more info in Mojo ... on: July 03, 2007, 08:33:59 AM
I would imagine that VDP is providing the structure (conceptual storyline) and if Brian is happy composing a whole pile of bits and pieces to hang on that structure.. then great!

From what I've read and other sources, I doubt very much if this is what's happening. Was VDP mentioned from the get-go ? Nope. My impression is Van Dyke providing lyrics to existing music.

not surprising.... BW has been recycling his musical fragments  since the beginning....

still feel upbeat about the whole project....     Cheesy
333  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: That Lucky Old Sun - bit more info in Mojo ... on: July 01, 2007, 12:20:09 PM
Maybe they are planning something similar to 'BWPS Cycle'.

1)  Brian plays the demos for Darian
2)  Darian and band arrange and learn the songs with rehearsal input from Brian
3) They play it live.
4) They record the album

Something like that.

With today's 65 year old BW with the troubles he's had... I would be a very happy fan to get something like this...
I would imagine that VDP is providing the structure (conceptual storyline) and if Brian is happy composing a whole pile of bits and pieces to hang on that structure.. then great!  and having Brian talking about how much he appreicates the new pitch control technology available in studio just makes me happier still...

Isn't this what we are all dreaming about?... new Brian Wilson music with his friends and allies cleaning up the rough edges that Brian's life would otherwise leave.... Cool Guy
334  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: In Concert CD why? on: June 16, 2007, 02:01:31 PM
Capitol version of "In Concert" sounds excellent!

No problems at all...
335  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Sunflower (Epic/Caribou CD) on: June 03, 2007, 05:29:30 PM
Sunflower on CD ( either version) has been a great disappointment  to me....
after enjoying the european version of Sunflower lp ( with mono Cottonfields as lead track) for years marvelling at the
awesome dynamics of the lp, I have found the CD's very very inferior... Dennis's material is especially  swamped with hiss and the separation ( depth) of the cd as a whole is totally lacking...
now I'm not a vinyl nut... but in this case, I haven't found the CD's to be satisfactory at all...

just my 2 cents...

Thanks to Tord again for this link....

Love it... wish I could buy it ( Canadians are not able to at this point)

I would also really really love to hear a whole cd of Brian and company putting that kind of effort into a song...
excellent vocals and production  ********
337  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: March 02, 2007, 03:14:00 PM
International .. sadly that also includes Canada....

once again, looks like I will have to use alternate sources to hear this... Embarrassed
338  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian performing new project in the UK on: January 26, 2007, 07:35:37 PM
Wilson says it "will consist of four 'rounds', with interspersed spoken word."

could this be something new with Steve Kalinich poetry?

interesting regardless... wonder as well if this is orchestrated, or at least smallish group like the strings in Smile?

339  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: September 21, 2006, 02:50:40 PM
sadly,
this all sounds real bad for those of us wanting to hear a proper version of "The Flame" and a release of the second Flame record sessions...
Blondie Chaplin isn't hard to track down these days ( www.blondiechaplin.net ) so maybe, with his permission we can get a better version of "The Flame" cd out there for the fans.. I wouldn't think that fallout records has sold that many yet.. and a real fan of the "Flame" boys (and Beach Boys for that matter) would likely want your version anyways.. being a proper remaster with (hopefully) much bonus material.. maybe even on Blondies current label??

pondering??
340  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's POB - any news? on: September 04, 2006, 12:14:09 PM
from the sounds of this... best hope at this point for Dennis material is the "Beach Boy Central" website/store if it comes to fruitation... hopefully this will get the earlier Dennis material out there for the fans.. and will also show Mr Guercio a avenue for the POB material onwards to be released without as many headaches?!

When/if the store opens then the infastructure will be there to get the songs out.. and for  James Guercio then it would be just a matter of royaltys..

oh course,  this sounds way to simple.. so it won't likely have a chance......
341  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: August 18, 2006, 05:22:35 AM
hopefully when Steve gets better we can hear what he thinks about "The Flame" being released on CD without his input..
I am assuming that he wouldn't have had any input in this release because its sourced from vinyl and without the bonus tracks.... Tongue

se the 45 versions of Rock And Roll Music and It's OK, from Greatest Hits, Vol. 3 - The Brother Years!  I was wondering though...why "Hot Summer Nights"? "It's A Beautiful Day" would make a better choice.  I'd also add some more serious songs, say "Love Surrounds Me" or "Full Sail" in place of "Rock & Roll To The Rescue" and "School Days".

The lyrics in IABD always were a bit of a put off while I found that non-fans seem to relate to "Hot Summer Nights" because of Jimmy Webb's chorus...  serious songs don't really work in context to this compilation... serious songs are not on "Endless Summer" either...what the set looks for is a newish "Don't F%$# with the Formula sound...

"The single version of "Its OK" different from the lp version??  I don't ever recall that... do know that the dj's hated the cold beginning to the song... I always thought that the backing vocal ideas in the Celebration version had merit... falsetto oh falsetto...

"Love Surrounds Me" or "Full Sail" are great songs but don't really fit the formula.. you could use "Full Sail" instead of "Where I Belong" I suppose...

If I were to add a Dennis song ( love Dennis, don't get me wrong) I would go with "Rainbows" but Dennis really doesn't fit the f^%# formula ... and I'm keeping this comp to '76 onwards...
344  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Newish (1976>) compilation CD I made.... on: August 16, 2006, 07:20:26 PM
I made this compilation to play in the car and also when my non-"superfan"  friends are around....was looking for
a "Sounds of Summer" type set and found that this works pretty well...

1.California Dreaming
2.Its OK  ( wish there was a new remix... adding a backing falsetto vocal in the chorus like the Celebration version and also some type of opening tag)
3.Peggy Sue
4.Good Timin'
5.Hot Fun in The Summertime
6.Susie Cincinnati
7.Getcha Back
8.Under The Boardwalk
9.Rock and Roll Music  ( I'd have used the Hot Version, but my copy isn't good enough)
10.Roller Skating Child
11.Rock and Roll to the Rescue
12.Hot Summer Nights
13.Still Cruisin'
13.Crocodile Rock
14.You're Still A Mystery (should be released)
15.Goin' On
16.She Believes in Love again
17.California Calling
18.Sunshine
19.School Days (single version)

opinions?  ( remember this is for the Endless Summer crowd)

345  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Beach Boy Central...are we close?? on: August 01, 2006, 03:03:02 PM
Hey Al
Beach Boy Central...are we close to a opening?   After July 4th came and went I was real hopeful for Aug 1st...

Could you narrow it down any? ( the opening of the site  that is...).. I, for one, check every day....

BigKarma Records is still waiting on the cd from the manufacturers.. but figures on mailing out orders by July 27th

I ahve my order in   Cheesy
349  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Blondie Chaplin CD ( current recordings ) on: July 18, 2006, 08:35:22 PM
sorry  not a insider.. just a fan who's kept his eyes on the 'net

I would speculate that "The Fragile Thread" never came out because all the major Record companies passed on it...

why would Blondie not release it himself over the net?  I don't think he's internet savy  .. like many near 60 year olds...

again.. I'm just speculating
350  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New Blondie Chaplin CD ( current recordings ) on: July 18, 2006, 08:25:23 PM
Sadly.. It isn't "The Fragile Thread"  thats the CD thats been in limbo forever ( its Great IMHO)
but a totally new set of recordings by Blondie with Fig and Lentin.. so its Skollie all over again.

The interview on site makes it sound like he new one is a singer/songwriter CD as apposed to a big production this time...."TFT" was a big production CD , so its sad its not likely to ever get released

I've never heard the Skollie lp so I can't compare.
