Interesting compilation of tunes and groups and styles. The Untamed Youth do a neat garage-punky 'Chug-A-Lug', Mooseheart Faith's 'Wind Chimes' is really trippy in an almost Syd Barrett sorta way, The Dragsters 'Pet Sounds' is note perfect and 'Meet Me In My Dreams' by Vacant Lot has alot of spirit. But alot of this album doesn't require much repeated listening. Original Sins 'Help Me Ronda' is way too gawky, same goes for The Cynics 'Be True To Your School'. Sonic Youth's 'I Know There's An Answer' has great intention but I just can't get into their droning sound. Das Damen's 'Johnny Carson' is really creepy with that loop of Ed McMahon's laugh. Quite disturbing. I won't even touch Sharky's Machine 'I Wanna Pick You Up'. Much of the rest is just average indie style stuff, nothing that great.

Smiley Smile Stuff / 1960's Beach Boys Albums / Re: Wild Honey

The Wild Honey album has some rough garage-rock stylings and I dig it! I love how the Beach Boys have albums like Pet Sounds which are produced with magic, and also have gems like Wild Honey which sound like they were recorded in my basement. Let me just skip to How She Boogalooed It first. Don't throw tomatoes at me but I love that song. In the same way I love Sam The Sham's 'Wooly Bully' or Swingin' Medallions 'Double Shot Of My Baby's Love'. Great fun. Not everything has to be complex and prog. Give me The Ramones over ELP anyday.
Anyway... Darlin' rocks. So does Wild Honey and Here Comes The Night. Country Air is a highlight for me, very atmospheric. I'd Love Just Once To See You is a great tune and somehow reminds me of Velvet Underground (Who Loves The Sun, which came out 3 years later). A Thing Or Two has that two-part structure that I really liked on Gettin' Hungry from the previous album. Let The Wind Blow is a lovely gem with beautiful vocals. But I Was Made To Love Her sounds like Carl is straining his voice which is uncommon. Mama Says is cool but once you've discovered it belongs on Vege-Tables it all of a sudden sounds unfinished.

Awesome album! Features one of my all time favorite songs (Let Him Run Wild). I love the energetic opening track The Girl From New York City (my favorite example of Brian's soaring falsetto). You're So Good To Me, Girl Don't Tell Me, California Girls, Help Me Rhonda all on the same album, all classics. I could live without Amusement Parks USA although I have nothing against it. It's sorta like a 1965 version of County Fair. I'm Bugged At My Old Man is funny but it spoils the mood after hearing CG, LHRW, YSGTM and Summer Means New Love (I prefer the 1976 version of Bugged with the hacking and coughing and laughther from Carl and Dennis). Love the a cappella And Your Dream Comes True, truly beautiful.

The whole album is great except for Nearest Faraway Place which I consider unappealing, saccharine and blah. With the exception of said song, I think the tunes are excellent and worthy of repeated listening. I know that many don't care for All I Want To Do but I find it exciting and extremely rock & roll. Never Learn Not To Love is contreversial but I think it's catchy as hell. Time To Get Alone is one of the best BB songs of the late 60s. And of course the SMiLE material...magical! 20/20 rocks.

I love the Friends album. It's a sweet and cozy little record, until Transcendental Meditation knocks you in the head at the end. I love the two Dennis songs, love Busy Doin Nothin and the title track, Wake The World is great fun (although it's better as a live track on Beach Boys '69). I would've replaced When A Man Needs A Woman and TM with something different, maybe Sail Plane Song and We're Together Again. Great album though. It definitely gets played on my turntable and CD player quite often.

Even though I consider Pet Sounds their best album of the 1960's, I like Smiley Smile best for some reason. I've worn-out several copies of Smiley Smile. I love how it's hardly 'produced', it's just 'recorded'. Yes it's a bizarre album. Yes lots of people were dissapointed by it. Yes it's short and basic and spooky sounding. But it works on so many levels for me. And the vocals are just amazing in many areas (Little Pad, With Me Tonight). Not an album to surf to...

Stunning! In my opinion it is the best album they released in the 1960s. And the order in which the songs appear is perfect. 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times' is my personal favorite from the record. I must admit though, I prefer the Carl version of Sloop John B from disc 3 of the Pet Sounds Sessions.
