I may be alone on the obverse -- I prefer Otis's original "Respect" (particularly the wild Monterey version) to Aretha's.
You are not alone (not familiar with the live version though). I could never warm to all those sockittome's (straight out of the Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In show). On the other hand I was so glad that Ms Franklyn was finally getting material that was worthy of her fantastic voice. John, Ross, how are you guys doing tonight? Stone's "Satisfaction" for me. Otis' "Respect" - Aretha was just getting started. Hard to say who had the best music overall. Otis was cut-off so quickly. Ron, and the captain's agreement on "I Think We're Alone Now" is so far out in left field it's difficult to make a comment. Jaw drops. Shocking observation. That's the one where one should be going for a hard hat. And I'll answer on the "(They Long to be) Close to You" - I like both about equally. They were both great singers. The Carpenters had a bigger hit with it. Think so, I have both records. Remember the Carpenters version on the radio more. We good, thanks for asking. Hope u b 2. You know I never liked the Carpenters in their hey day -- wasn't my thing. But heard a deejay play "Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun" at a wedding the other day. Sounded gorgeous. I also enjoyed a documentary I saw on PBS. Richard was a very adept musician/arranger. That's how I felt, too. I got into them after I got older, something like the mid-80s. A lot of the 70s music was like that for me. I grew to even like some of the BubbleGum stuff. Crazy tracks like "Sugar, Sugar" - though in all honesty, it was only after I heard Alex Chilton do it. Also, "Gimmie, Gimme, Gimmie" - and my friends give me sh*it for it! They don't like ABBA, either. I do, and did when they first came out. In the 70s if you did like something like that, you kept it to yourself.

I had a good check up. Lost eight more pounds, I actually haven't gained a pound since 2008. That's the everyday goal for me. I've lost sixty-eight pounds in those eight years. Sounds slow, but slow is the best. I'm down to 193 on a 5'8" frame. A1c continues to go down. Yeah, I have the "everybody has it in America" -dreaded T2D for the last ten years. This was also my yearly check, so blood work. I should get those results soon. Doc doesn't anticipate any problems. I feel great.
John, Mari's photo of a hillside near Seattle is in the tread itself, not one of Bubs. He posted the rainbow pic in his InstaGram set. -Will

I have returned from a weekend-long field trip to a local mountain to collect data for an ecology class.
I'm tired and dealing with wasp stings and probably dirty. But I had a good time.
And now, I await the return of someone else.
Hi, M. Sounds like it's "all systems go" in your part of the world these days. :=) Happiness is a groovy thing. Throw beads and flowers into the sky, they come back down diamonds strung on rainbow threads. Important to have the right atmosphere. Just the right amount of mist in the air. You need that to make rainbows show. I saw that in the photo you posted this morning, Mari. As Paul said, Get on the Right Thing. Good Times Coming. love, -Will Can't believe it. Bubs put up a rainbow road picture this morning! I'm off to the doctor in a few hours for my three month check-up. Yeah, every three months. Those watchers!

I just took the ten minutes it takes to play this. Nice after dinner music - that's what I just finished in my time zone. "Oh God, Where Are You Now?" - that's the Sufjan I love. From my favorite album by him. It was the first one I discovered, so maybe that has something to do with it. But probably not. Beautiful album. I got into Sufjan around the same time I got into Sam, 2004. These past dozen years, it's this type of music I am drawn to the most. This particular track is a very good example of that. The States theme turned out to be a gimmick, but did we really believe he could do all 50? naw. It's too close to party-time for me to comment right now. Got some Stevens notes I've been saving to put up at PSF. soon soon... It's Saturday Night, and that means Fun!

Hey Emily, Yeah, when they released the big box of all the American albums they stuck that in there to be complete. Has Hey Jude album, too. The covers were done better than on the first two volumes as well, HELP! has a gate-fold cover. Full of neat stuff, you get both of the Yesterday...and Today covers. You can buy individual albums from this box. Check it out.
Have a fun week-end, everybody. -Will

Hi, M (I refuse to call you what they've decided on over there, hahaha).
These artists----and, I regret to say, Vampire Weekend----are where our musical tastes tend to drift apart somewhat. All three make little or no impression on me. Protomartyr and Chastity Belt are a different matter! (Any other Hardly Art-ists you'd recommend?)
I'm still out on your current favourite----waiting to hear her latest album complete, I suppose...
Thank you for not using the name I have recently been dubbed. That's a shame, john. Any love for the Shins or Fleet Foxes or Tame Impala at all? Another three I adore, so... But, currently, thanks to the music library of Bubbly Waves: Hey John. Hey undercover-m and Bubs. I'm not calling you that. Wasn't that just in the shoutbox? That should scroll away soon... Wait, in the We're Getting Drunk threads? Tell folks that you don't like it. If they do it again, tell them again! Don't wait for them to read it over here. I don't really know the music of the Fleet Foxes, but I like Tame Impala very very much, one of the better modern bands - great live, too! I own one of the Shins' albums, and like most of what I have played over the years. I've gotten to know Bubbly's moods well over time, and his musical likes and dislikes, so - his library if you will. I love the Everly Brothers. If you look around, I've posted about it here. Hope all of you are headed towards a great week-end. I See You -Will

Was it intentional for this thread to start on the 53rd anniversary of the album's release?
Umm.... I'm pretty sure that the album was originally released on the same day that JFK was assassinated Good on ya. Leave it to an Australian to correct us yanks! I like your new avatar and user-name, too. I also see a running argument developing... "Money" -My favorite version is by The Beatles.

Wow. No. Just a bit of serendipity. Ok, it was released on NOVEMBER 22. Not September. Ah well. pixletwin, Guess not everybody is reading your intro quote box which clearly states the release date. You fell for it too! ouch! Just any ol' 22 won't do. I love this album, but as with many of us here - grew up with Capitol's Meet The Beatles!. I didn't hear the British counterpart until 1970, although I had read the track listing in 1964. To this day I have a problem with "Money" placed as the last track. I also believe Meet The Beatles! is a much stronger set of songs than The Beatles Second Album. Most people do not agree with that. "Money" was given no important place on the second Capitol Beatles album. And, as BE pointed out, George's numbers were tossed to the second American album. John had strong numbers on both albums, 'cause, well, John was just the best of the bunch. I tend to play those first two volumes of the American albums when I listen to the early songs, but I have the big box Apple/UMe released using the mix of non-American versions of some songs. Of those that have that box, has anybody taken the time to play The Beatles Story? I haven't. Not even once, and it's one of the very few Beatles albums I do not own on original vinyl, don't have the Rock'n'Roll comp either. Yeah, 1964 was the last time I heard "the story"- One of the things I do love about the way with the beatles was put together is opening with "It Won't Be Long" and "All I've Got To Do" - two of Lennon's strongest early songs. Again, given no special place by Capitol on Meet The Beatles!. Wasn't that just their way? "Don't Bother Me" was my favorite George song until 1968, when it was finally equaled by his white album offerings, though I love "The Inner Light" and all of his songs from Yellow Submarine. I'm going to guess the George and Ringo songs from every era will be under the wheels of the Magical Mystery Tour bus quickly. I hope you do Past Masters or the Hey Jude comp in this game, pixletwin. That's where you will find my favorite George track, ever. Okay. let me vote. My least favorite track on this album is "Till There Was You" -I'll color-code my selections from now on, so as to be easily seen when you are scanning back thru doing the count.

... the Stones made I Wanna Be Your Man (from With The Beatles) their own!
Hey Rei, nice to see you are still around. I see you over on the SHF as well. I don't think the Stones made it their own, exactly. They gave it their own unique spin. As you know, the Stones were basically a covers band in their early days. They bested many songs with a cover. It was great they were still playing it on a recent tour. The Stones sure do beat Paul's lame live version. The Beatles version? That's right around the corner. >

My favorite songs from this album are: "There's A Place" and "Ask Me Why" and "Anna" -in that order.
The three that are left are all very very good, because The Beatles were very very good. The best band the UK ever produced.
"Twist and Shout" by The Beatles is my favorite version of that song. I love many of the cover versions they did, one of which is in my Top 3. John was my favorite singer and writer in The Beatles when I was living thru the times. Paul had plenty of great songs, and they wrote many many great songs together. They both added little touches to each others songs to make them better. John just had so much more Soul in their early days. Paul couldn't equal that until 1966.
Then something happened... I'll talk about that when we get there.
What I should have made more clear about my thoughts on "Twist and Shout" is that this performance was not the best, not the best John could do, cover or not. I don't think it was a great idea to record an album in a day. I'm sure they thought so too. Their second album blew the first one away. We all noticed the six weak numbers, and voted them out in the first six rounds, one after another.
I see these last three standing as almost a tie, but I will pick one:
"Please Please Me"
