Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Hearing your favorite song for the first time.

I remember hearing Surf's Up for the first time and pretty much laying in my bed by the end staring up at the ceiling. I had just graduated from college and didn't have a job lined up yet.
Something just sort of clicked I guess.
I was amazed at the melody and how great Brian and Carl sounded. I was so amazed that these guys made this amazing piece of music when they were 23 years old? It just really made me think about a lot of things.

For those saying that they don't hear a lot of Brian on this I will add this:
I've been listening to Nate for quite a long time. Ever since his start with his band The Format. If you haven't listened to their album "Dog Problems" you really should, it's a great one.
But I digress, Nate's vocals are typically pretty sporadic. I think you can really tell that Brian had a lot to do with the melody and reigning in Nate's vocals so they weren't all over the place.
The harmonies during the chorus are absolutely beautiful. The melodies, instrumentation, chord progressions, wow. This track bleeds Brian. I can't help but imagine a young Brian singing Brian's verse towards the end. It is just so good. I think it's the best I've heard on this album so far.

Am I totally wrong or was Dennis actually the first one to start wearing Hawiian shirts?
There are pics from the 73/74 era, where he's bustin that look...... and of course looking cool in the process.. Then again Dennis was an authentic Beach-Type-Person.
Well the late 60's early 70's was sort of when the whole 'tiki culture' was big, especially in California. People wearing hawaiian shirts and tiki restaurants and tiki bars in the house or whatever. So he was probably just following that trend.

Mike and Bruce a cheap imitation of the old band? I see where you're coming from but I disagree. Brian is Brian but I wouldn't say his gigs make me think 'oh that's what it would have been like 50 years ago'. I am 29 but I can't imagine that the original band were set up like Brian's band? To me Brian's gigs are a bit like a live version of Pet Sounds - Brian and a bunch of brilliant musicians, but not the fun and togetherness of the Beach Boys. There always seems to be something slightly missing and I think that may be stage presence.
I never saw any original line up gigs but I'd imagine that most of them in the mid 60s/late 70s at least would have been more like the current BB set up? I don't know, but I don't see anything wrong with what M&B are doing. They are playing BB songs at a very high standard and encouraging the crowd to have fun. I don't personally see how that could possibly ruin any legacy at all. Constant in-fighting and public spats however.....
I agree. Ive seen Brian a smattering of times over the last 5 years as well as M+B. I think they are both good shows and very similar when it all boils down. Mike and Bruce seem like they want to play the hits and get the crowd really engaged and every now and then throw in a couple surprises but it's very predictable and I'm not sure if I will ever see them again. Brian on the other hand I will probably see again if he is ever in the area. He seems like he is always having an off night and it really brings the show down for me. This isn't just from shows I have seen either. The performance I see online almost seem identical. Brian not really playing the keys, or really even singing for that matter. He plays a few more songs off of Pet Sounds than M+B but the setlist is typically very close and almost the same every time he comes through. So I guess overall I am just trying to say that they are both way too similar and I don't get what all the hubbub is about.

Listen to Pet Sounds.
Then slowly dig into the less commercially successful albums like Friends, Smiley Smile, Surf's Up, Sunflower.
Listen to those exclusively for a while.
Then get into their earlier stuff circa "Today!"
Then stumble upon Love You and become obsessed with it, which will make you want to find the weirdest stuff Brian Wilson ever made. You will then want to scour the internet and small record shops hoping to find b-sides, rarities, demos.
Realize that it can be difficult to find some of the gems that Brian created and buy Made In California.
That's essentially what I did and I think it's a good "next step"

Well I read it at a friends house so I don't have it with me but it said there was two versions of the "Last Song"
One with Lana and one with Brian. It didn't give much info except that it's a ballad and that it is about his Beach Boys dissolution. Don Was was quoted saying something about how if it is truly his last song it would be an amazing coda.
It also talked about some track names: Summer Means New Love which is a remake of a 1965 beach boys instrumental. "On The Island" which was on his instagram. as well as "Danny Boy" and "Special Love' with Frank Ocean. Kacey Musgraves sings on a track called "Guess You Had To Be There". But I guess none of the tracks are final and could be cut from the final album.
Brian mentioned how the guy from Fun reminds him of Carl.
Someone else is quoted saying that the entire album is on the same level as Summer's Gone.
I would recommend picking up the July issue of rolling stone with Lana Del Rey on the cover to read the whole thing.
