I heard or read somewhere that Bruce was fishing for a solo record deal from Warner Brothers in summer-67 - thus his absence from the Hawaii concerts. I doubt that set well with the band.
I've also heard or read that Mike approached David Marks in 69 or so about returning to the band to replace Bruce. Seems like his status was never really that rock solid until he returned in 1980.

As an aside - I think in the Tom Nolan article from Rolling Stone in 70 or 71 Brian mentions Marilyn getting him a new piano for he 30th birthday. He mentioned that some of the "keys stick". I believe it was a Steinway. So much for the Chickering at that point.

I heard a fan tape about a year before the 1st vinyl boot - those were interesting and exciting times. I still have those original boots - the first and second edition - are they collectable?
At that point I had no hope that BDW would ever make any meaningful music again or that we would ever hear anything approaching a completed SMiLE. In many ways it has worked out much better than I ever could have dreamed.

Caught the Horseshoe gig - that's two in one week after the Hollywood Bowl Sunday. Pretty much identical shows in terms of the sets. Brian seemed a bit more engaged although he still half way talks through some of the songs with a staccato like meter. Blonde was awesome, Al was solid. Matt Jardine is killing the falsetto parts - best I've hear in years. Good to see Billy Hinche on the keys, too bad he doesn't get to play any guitar in the shows as he can certainly rip it up. Looked to be sold out with an engaged audience. Pretty good end to a fantastic week.

The Till I Die scene is amazing film making. I kind of wish Murry had been fleshed out a bit more - better than I ever expected overall. What a great way to follow NPP.
